  1. No one said he should be nominated for a Cy Young. Of course he not any good. But ask any manager, GM, owner or player and ask what you want from a guy like that who is going to be back in the minors in another week and might not even be in the organization by the end of the year. They want him to give you a chance to win and don't blow up the bullpen. That's what he did. You yourself said he sucks. So what did you expect? You probably expected him to go three innings and give up eight runs.
  2. You do know that Ortiz has bad wheels and he did a lot of hard running yesterday. He even said he was going to be sore today. I want Farrell to be too cautious at this point of the season with Ortiz.
  3. For a journeyman who was needed for a couple of fill-in starts it certainly was.
  4. Actually, I'd tweek the second part. The second failing was more that veterans like Napoli and Shane were on the decline or at the end, veterans like Pedey and Ortiz slumped at the wrong time -- Pedey was horrible early in 2014 at driving in runs and Ortiz slumped (like everyone) in May -- and the kids weren't ready to carry the team. Really what was needed was patience to weed out Napoli and Shane but more to let the kids develop. We saw that happening at the end of last year. Had Pablo and Hanley lived up to expectations in May at the plate in May -- Hanley did get hurt, which didn't help -- that might have helped the team tread water better during the first half of the season.
  5. And to add, the young guys were starting to hit and the Sox were playing well when Farrell when on sick leave. I know people like to rip Farrell and give all the credit for the finish to Lovullo, but the Sox were already on an upswing.
  6. Agree. And I didn't mind the starts in April against righties. First, the Sox weren't seeing lefties and he had to get in. Also, in 2014, he actually was better against righties (.243 BA and .720 OPS) than he was against lefties (.149 BA and .561 OPS). So year to year, things can change.
  7. It really is amazing. The Sox average 5.5 runs. That's more than a run better than all other AL teams except Texas, which averages 4.71. The Sox batting average is 20 points higher than second-place Baltimore -- .288 to .268. The Sox OPS is .820. Baltimore is second at .787. The Sox are sixth in home runs, but really, does it matter? They lead in doubles, triples and extra-base hits.
  8. It's too early in his career to say how good or bad Shaw is against either lefties or righties. Last year, in 85 plate appearances against lefties, he batted .329 with 6 home runs and a .975 OPS. Against righties in 163 PA, he batted .236 with just 7 HR and a .723 OPS. Right now, you play him against lefties and righties to give him a body or work against each to see what he really is.
  9. For an emergency starter, O'Sullivan did his job. But 6 IP, 4 ER, 12 hits -- he is what he is, a journeyman.
  10. I'd say Travis Shaw is the biggest surprise, but this goes back to last year too. I was more surprised at how bad Porcello was last year than as good he's been this year. I don't expect him to have a sub-3.00 ERA, but I'm not surprised that he's pitching well. In 2015, he had a 3.45 ERA and had been improving each year. So at worst, I expected him to have no worse than a 4.10-4.20 ERA last year and expected him to be around 3.60 to 3.80.
  11. On a talk show over the weekend, someone said that when Buchholz has been good he's been good from the start and when he's been mediocre or bad, he's been mediocre or bad from the start. Keep in mind 2012. His ERA over his first six starts was over 9.00. Over his next 22 starts his ERA was around 3.55 and if you take out the last start, his ERA over the next 21 starts was something like 3.15. So there is a chance that once he gets going, he could go on a run.
  12. Wasn't comparing Price and Buchholz. The point was that too much blame for the pitching struggles was put on the idea that the Sox did not have an ace at the beginning of the season when the fact was, the guy the Sox was calling their ace really was pitching like an ace. The guys stunk not because there was or wasn't an ace. They stunk because THEY stunk. It was on them, no on anyone else. This year, the ace isn't pitching like an ace but other guys are pitching well because THEY ARE PITCHING well. I'm not discounting the value of having a true ace, but I get sick and tired when fans or analysts put the blame for one player's struggles on others rather than putting the blame on the player himself.
  13. Some of the BDC posters have come here and others have gone to the freeforums board that was created. I'm checking out both to see which I enjoy more. I noticed that there are some good posters, whom I've enjoyed reading from BDC over here, which is a good thing.
  14. Because Buchholz is the title of the thread, I'll post something about Buchholz. Last year when all the other starters stunk, Buchholz was pitching great -- 3.26 ERA in 18 starts and 3.10 ERA in nine starts from May to late June when the Sox fell from 2 out to 10 out. Yet a lot of the blame for the failures of the other pitchers was that there was no ace to anchor the staff and allow other pitchers to fall into place, despite the fact that Buchholz was pitching like an ace. This year, the ace -- Price -- isn't pitching anything like an ace, yet for some reason other pitchers like Wright and Porcello are pitching great -- even Owens in his last start. Hmmm.
  15. I agree. When I was young, Yaz was always my favorite player, but I liked Reggie Smith and Tommy Harper and hated when George Scott was traded to the Brewers. Luis Tiant was my favorite pitcher, and when Fred Lynn and Jim Rice came up, I always liked Rice better. I was too young and stupid, I guess, to realize that Boston fans weren't supposed to like black players.
