Obviously I have no control or personal knowledge about Sale's condition. Again obviously, I do not want for them to 'go for it' if Sale isn't going to be able to contribute. It's the same with JDM (if he opts out I don't want to "go for it"), Price - same thing. Saying I wanted to go for it in 2020 was, of course, contingent upon our having a team with the talent to go for it. If Sale is healthy and JDM and Price come back and it's not a lost season then there is every reason to not move Betts and there is a point in contending a contract offer to Bradley.

That was my thought early-on. Not to wish any bad luck on Sale, but if that's the case get him taken care of now. He can take our "lost" season off to recuperate, then come back strong in 2021.

I didn't play against him but I saw him play up here in Maine near the end of his career. He was still untouchable.

"My" league did the same thing. I actually liked that rule for softball because it relies more on defense. The 'higher' leagues are composed of a team of guys whose only ability is to hit the ball over the fence. Yawn.

Yep, 6'-12'. I played baseball until the leagues dried up around here when I was in my late 20's, then I turned to the only thing available to me that resembled baseball. I played until I was 52, when my throwing shoulder stopped cooperating with me. I was given the choice between surgery and giving up softball and took Door #2. I still miss it.

The last time I played was 20 years ago (That's hard to believe. Time does fly, doesn't it!) and the game I played then was the 6' arc. We started with a 0-0 count and a foul ball on the 3rd strike was an out. At that arc it's easy to make contact with the ball and that third strike rule made it impossible for a hitter to keep fouling off pitches until he got a pitch he could hit out. Of course it also made it easier for a smart pitcher to throw inside pitches after two strikes and wait for the hitter to pull one of them foul. :-)

You've seen players whom most of us have only heard of and your perspective has been greatly appreciated. Two differences. Trolls like Babe & Pike simply posted outrageously stupid things to get a rise out of people. I've always questioned their mental stability, but that's another story. Yankees trolls like to come here and point out the (alleged) deficiencies in the Sox as compared to the Yankees. I'm never certain if they know they're actually trolling or if they're tone deaf. Other trolls come here to point out the (alleged) deficiencies in the Sox as compared to anyone anywhere to get that rise out of people. These guys know they're trolling but they're good enough at it so they can 'laugh up their sleeve' while doing it. I personally don't see that as a good personality trait, but.. whatever. The modern day trolls are better at trolling than those in the past. The good ones intersperse their trolling posts with informative ones to keep from being banned. But you already know that.

IMO the operative word in your post was "ONLY". Apparently in your eyes since Jacko and Harmony sometimes also make constructive posts they are free from being called trolls. In my eyes trolling is where you find it. Posters aren't exempt from being trolls just because they sometimes make constructive posts.

The difference here is that we're on a Red Sox board roasting the Yankees. That's not trolling. If we went to a Yankees board and said the same things about the Yankees... that would be trolling.

I'm trying to reconcile what you said here with what I saw online. Aluminum is a hard material. It doesn't have a lot of "give." In other words, aluminum is highly elastic. Therefore, very little of the ball's initial kinetic energy (the energy associated with motion) is used up in permanently deforming the aluminum. Indeed, the aluminum springs back quickly and the ball retains much of its initial energy. In contrast, wood is less elastic: it is deformed permanently and to a greater extent than aluminum. My interpretation of this is that the aluminum bat springs back thereby creating a "trampoline effect" which propels the ball off the bat at a faster speed than would a wooden bat. Since aluminum bats are hollow it's my understanding that some manufacturers of aluminum bats have installed a 'disc' inside the bat or thickened the wall of the bat to limit that trampoline effect and thereby reduce the risk to pitchers of having balls hit back at them. In fact, these "altered" bats are the only ones allowable for high school use now.

Speaking of ideas that will grow old fast ^^^^^^

We got JBJ in the 2011 draft. He got limited playing time in 2013 and more time starting in 2014 We got Mookie also in the 2011 draft. He started getting playing time in 2014. While there were important additions made to the team prior to 2018 those two were instrumental in winning the WS in 2018 after coming through our farm system. To follow that track, if we were to finish last in 2021 any outstanding prospects we'd get in the 2022 draft could be ready for the bigs in 2025. Yes, we'd have to sign other probably high priced players for 2026 but we could have solid players on the team who've come through our farm system.

Anyone who's played or coached on very successful (or not at all successful) teams knows that winning and losing are both self-perpetuating. When a team is winning spirits are good and everyone has everyone else's backs. Every loss hurts. When teams are losing a general malaise sets in and the attitude becomes, 'ok. We lost today, but we'll do better tomorrow.' That's what it felt like to me this year.

I've already resigned myself to losing JDM and either JBJ or Betts - and maybe both. That's what a reset is. It saves us a ton of money to reset the team with, and yes, we may be finishing last for a year or two. Well.. not quite last as long as Baltimore is in the ALE. But far enough down to restock the farm through drafts. And BTW, although I didn't verbalize it, I thoroughly enjoyed the 2014 & 2015 seasons, watching our two premier outfielders play together. I had no delusions about those teams making the playoffs, there was no angst when they lost, I was able to just sit back, munch popcorn, and enjoy the games. Does that make me a "bad fan"?
