  1. I dunno. Maybe I got spoiled in the past few years, but I want my reliever to throw STRIKES. Kimbrel drives me crazy with his going 3-1 or 3-2 on hitters. And the LAST thing I want my reliever to do is walk people! Yes, at the end of the day (or inning) he gets the job done but his margin for error is razor thin in too many games for my liking. IMO the next few weeks are going to be interesting in seeing if Koji still "has it". If he does, when Kimbrel comes back then he pitches the 8th and Koji pitches the 9th if I'm the manager. If he doesn't still have "it" then Ziegler is going to be seeing more work, and at least we'll have some insight as to what to do about re-signing Koji for next season.
  2. Madison Bumgarner has a no-no going through 7, the only baserunner getting there on an error. Check out espn. Youk, feel free to dump this on Monday, but for now I didn't know where to put it so it would be seen.
  3. We now have an "X" and a "Z". If Moncada can be brought up we'll have our "Y". ...just an observation.
  4. ...and THAT I agree with 100%!
  5. Maybe I wasn't clear. I don't understand why Moncada hasn't been taking reps at a different position already. As Moon said in a different thread, he's about as blocked as one can be at second base. However, if they're going to bring someone up within the next month or so they're going to bring up the guy who's been playing in the OF, not the second baseman to fill the outfield slot, regardless of how good an athlete the second baseman is.
  6. My feeling exactly. I'm usually ho-hum about the AS Game. I watch it if there's nothing else on that I want to watch. This year I'm looking forward to seeing it. Red Sox vs. Cubbies.
  7. What are you thinking? There's no "seniority system" in promoting from the minors to the majors. It's all about filling gaps. If they need an outfielder before they need an infielder they're not going to put off promoting a good outfielder just because there's an infielder "ahead of him". I want to see Moncada getting some reps at third base. That's where our next pressing need is. Does anyone know if he has the arm to play 3B?
  8. I respectfully disagree. IMO Koji has to be the closer to be at his best. It's in his mind. I've thought for some time that he's as good as he is because he won't let himself be unsuccessful. It's in his culture. And on the days he closes I hope I'm right!
  9. Rich Hill is my choice, assuming he can be gotten for anywhere near a reasonable price. He's a known commodity and he's pitched in the AL. I'm wary of pitchers who try to come from the NL to the AL.
  10. I agree. We do look thin but it's only for a couple of days. Not bringing him up is a gamble I'm willing to take. But why is it all about Benny to fill that spot? There must be someone else in Pawtucket who can fill a spot in an emergency and catch fly balls, even if he's a dead spot in the order.
  11. As tempting as it is to bring Benny up quickly, especially now with Holt down for an indeterminate time, I want that extra year of control to find out who he really is and minor league baseball doesn't always tell that. Sometimes it takes a few trips to Pawtucket and back, and even then sometimes we can't be sure. We (and by "we" I mean some posters) tend to get tied up in the moment. They tend be impatient and want young players to be called up early. I can still remember when some posters wanted JBJ to be used as trade bait because "he can't hit". I keep hearing that Benny is another of those once-in-a-lifetime players like Mookie so, to paraphrase UN, let's not f*** this up.
  12. As I was watching the game I was thinking how much the Rays could use Swihart - once he gets healthy.
  13. Catching up with past posts: I don't see that picking up A. Hill has to have anything to do with pitching - or it might. Whichever it is, I see the rationale in picking up (A) Hill. Beyond that, IMO we have to think about our expectations for this team. Is last to first reasonable, or can we be satisfied with moving in the right direction? I'm not in favor of shooting our load this year to try to win the WS (sorry Papi) and in the process mortgage the future. IMO making the playoffs is the goal, anything beyond that is, as a friend of mine would say, "Gravy on the cake".
  14. The problem isn't in promoting Benni to Boston. The problem is in sending him back down if it doesn't work out. A player has three option years during which he can be sent up or down an unlimited number of times. Having Benni skip AAA and come to Boston this year is a big gamble because if he doesn't stick and get sent back down they've used up one of his option years. OTOH if they wait and have him as a September call-up they still have his three options years to help his development. IMHO we're not desperate enough for an OF'er to take that gamble.
  15. I've always liked Brentz as a player. He's a Brandon Moss-type player. He's not going to replace Mookie or JBJ but he could be serviceable as a 3rd or 4th OF on this team.
  16. I have no idea what happened to Kingface. He just kinda disappeared. I read and post both on this forum and the one referred to as BDC2 and he's not on either of them. Too bad, too. I didn't always agree with King but he kept the conversations going.
  17. In the words of our old pal Kingface, Tick...tock...tick....tock.
  18. IMHO Buch is one of the few players someone else might want whom we'd be willing to part with.
  19. Picking up the option was as close to a no-brainer as one gets. It's easy to say in July of 2016 that it wasn't a good idea but hindsight is always 20-20. At the time it looked like we'd be getting 1/2 of a season of a pitcher with ace quality for $13M. If one figures that a true ace is worth $26M/year $13M is about the going price for a half year. The problem is that the Sox didn't plan for what to do in that other 1/2 year. And the bigger problem is that Buch isn't earning that $13M this year but that was unforeseeable.
  20. Ummm..yeah. The problem with that is that he still gave up 3 ER in 4 1/3 innings. An ERA of 6.28. And I'm not sure that comparing yesterday's outing with his worst one of the year and then saying "I've done worse" is the best benchmark. But maybe that's just my take on it.
  21. Harold Reynolds in the first inning: "We never used to say that about him any more". What is this guy doing broadcasting for a major (or any) network?
  22. Shut up Harold!
  23. How can Willis not be on thin ice, when Pedey is doing his job for him?
  24. Of course not. That's why I don't think we're going to be sellers. Nobody is going to want what we're willing to sell.
  25. "...people lie to their doctor, and if you'll lie to your doctor you'll lie to ANYONE!"
