  1. THERE! That's what I wanted! Maybe I should have chewed him out earlier in the season!!
  2. I think it was Doji who said he hopes Abad doesn't become Adreadful. Prophetic.
  3. I'm jumping on this bandwagon too! I like that idea!!
  4. The thing I find amazing about this is that I heard today that Papelbon is expected to make his decision today. I can't believe that ML teams are so desperate for washed-up closers that the closer has so many suitors that he has to make up his mind which one to go with!
  5. No, unwritten rules are not dumb. They're a gentleman's code of conduct within a game. When you're leading 16-2 is it "dumb" to stop stealing bases? When a team is trailing by several runs and the opposing pitcher has a no-no going is it "dumb" to not bunt? When a runner on 2nd is advancing to 3rd and there's a popup to the SS is it "dumb" to NOT say "I GOT IT!"? I used to have a t-shirt with "The Unwritten Rules" listed on it for all sports. Unfortunately my ex-wife got it in the divorce. Ugh.
  6. Yes, and there's not much a manager can do about that. A pitcher has to be given a little bit of slack early in the game, even if it's just to get the BP ready. I was referring more to the games I remember when he'd pull a pitcher after an out or at the end of an inning. It had to be obvious that the pitcher had lost it all before he'd pull a pitcher after giving up a hit. It seemed to me like he always wanted a pitcher leaving the game to be able to say, "I got my last guy out", which would give the pitcher a feeling of success (no matter how badly he sucked before that!)
  7. I like to refer to that as "not getting in the player's way", and it's something good managers do very well.
  8. That was something I noticed early-on in Tito's tenure in Boston. While he may be accused off occasionally pulling a pitcher too early, he always made every effort to make sure the pitcher left the game on a positive note.
  9. How can someone who thinks he's a closer NOT have a wipe-out pitch?
  10. Is it asking too f***ing much to have a f***ing reliever who can throw f***ING STRIKES???? Yeah, I know, a win is a win but sooner or later this s*** is going to come back to bite us on the ass big time!!
  11. Thanks IRS. I wasn't aware of the Major League Minimum salary provision. Other than that I think we're on the same page and we couldn't both be wrong, could we? :-))
  12. Just when I think I understand how demotions and options work someone asks a question like this^^. :-( My understanding (which has a 50/50 chance of being wrong) is that Sandoval's longevity gives him the right to refuse an assignment to Pawtucket. If he refuses to go to Pawtucket the Sox have the right to DFA him, and anyone who picks him up is then responsible for his contract. If no one picks him up the Sox are responsible for paying him while he sits on his ample ass at home watching games on tv and playing golf. (Of course once a player is DFA'd the club holding his contract has the right to try to trade him for 15 (?) days for whatever they can get for him, including another bad contract and/or salary relief.) OTOH, if he DOES elect to go to Pawtucket the Sox still have to pay him but he doesn't have to be on the 40 man roster so his salary doesn't count toward the Luxury Tax.
  13. "Fast backward" one year and substitute "Porcillo" for "Pomeranz".
  14. KC of the mid 70's. Freddie Patek and Cookie Rojas.
  15. Welll... I wouldn't go so far as to say that I thought he was toast after Inning #7, but given how #7 went, with Mookie robbing a HR and the DBax making better contact I was of the opinion that if Price answered the bell for #8 I'd have someone up and lightly warming.
  16. Leyland? Really? Sometimes a person's legacy is based on what they did last. I distinctly remember a Sox/Tigers playoff game when Leyland mysteriously went to reliever after reliever - all of whom were doing the job - until he finally found someone who couldn't and the Sox came back for the win. I remember thinking at the time, "Man, the forums would crucify Tito for this!" In a more general sense, IMO the requirements for a manager have changed in the past 10-20 years. There was a time when the manager ruled with an iron hand, and if the players didn't like it they were free to play someplace else. Now managers are required to be more touchy-feely with the players and more media-friendly. IMO Dick Williams is one of the best in my (fairly) recent memory but I can't imagine him being able to manage in today's environment.
  17. You don't save a pitcher for tomorrow. It might rain tomorrow. - Leo Durocher And speaking of Durocher, here's another one that's particularly appropos to this thread: "If you don't win you're going to get fired. If you do win you're only putting off the day when you're going to get fired." Sometimes I think these old guys were onto something, ya know?
  18. I'm going to miss Vin Scully. Hell, I already miss Vin Scully! I hate his being on the west coast where I have to stay up late to listen to him. IMHO the greatest ever. My absolute greatest baseball fantasy would be to make a month-long road trip from coast to coast visiting as many parks as possible with Vin Scully riding shotgun. I'd just sit there and listen to him.
  19. True enough. That undoubtedly changed the history of baseball. I've long said that the MLPBA has too much power but in that situation their power saved the Sox bacon!
  20. I agree that there are only a few that I could remember, but if there's another that someone particularly 'liked' I didn't want to rule it out. My favorite was the one involving Dempster. I agree that it was dumb, but at the same time I liked the fact that Dempster was willing to make the statement regardless of the risk. Sometimes ya just gotta do what ya gotta do! But my very favorite part is that the umpire backed Dempster by refusing to throw him out of the game. And then just to add insult to injury, he kicked out Giriardi when Giriardi was obviously right!
  21. Well, that certainly was a disappointing series with the EE. The only good thing to come out of it is that the Sox will probably never see ARod again. In an effort to inject something positive into the situation, I ask you, "What's your favorite moment in Red Sox/ARod history", the day ARod removed all doubt as to just how big a douche he is? Was it 1) The famous and well documented day 'Tek not only provided a 'leather sandwich' to ARod, but forced him to eat it? 2) The equally as famous and almost as well documented day ARod slapped the ball out of Bronson Arroyo's glove? 3) The day ARod returned to Fenway after his suspension and Ryan Dempster throws his first pitch behind ARod and misses him two more times before finally hitting him with a 3-0 pitch. Dempster doesn't get ejected but Giriradi does. 4) Something else..... (please fill in the blank)
  22. Clenching his teeth and swearing, maybe?
  23. I think Farrell should have brought in Ryan Dempster to face ARod.
  24. Ahhh..the irony in this entire situation.... I've always been a Vasquez cheerleader, mostly because I put a higher value than most people do on defense. That's why when he got injured and lost all of the 2015 season I was concerned that his absence would give Swihart the advantage in getting the starting spot in 2016. Now it's 2016 and while Swihart was playing LF and doing limited catching in the minors with Vaz catching for the Sox, Swihart has gotten injured, essentially negating any advantage Swi may have gotten by remaining healthy. And now at the end of the day Leon has come out of nowhere to capture the starting job while Vaz has been sent down to Pawtucket. "As sands pass through the hourglass....."
  25. Not the only one. I'm learning the personalities here.
