  1. I'm more concerned about his defense. I'm sick of watching routine balls get bobbled and/or thrown away.
  2. We're about 1/2 step from PanicLand. Do you have a better option?
  3. Are you saying you wouldn't trade Eck for Gary Thorne?
  4. I agree on both counts. I was as critical as anyone of Kimbrel's wildness. Eck remarked recently how he was 'pulling' the ball, causing it to run toward the left but he now seems to have found the cure. I'd like to think that Spud & I had something to do with that. :-) And that beard - it looks like a cat with the mange. Ugh.
  5. I didn't understand why Kendrick didn't make the team coming out of ST. If he can come anywhere near replicating that we'll be ok.
  6. Two players, Pedroia and JBJ who have a low OPS but both of them are among the best at their position defensively. I know I keep railing on about this, but IMO we tend to focus too much on offensive stats because they're easier to understand. Both of those guys are worth having on the team because of their defense in spite of their low OPS.
  7. I don't have any issues with Wright. IMO many of the issues others have with him is in their expectations. We all, myself included, want a pitcher who can go out there day after day and we know what we're getting. OTOH Wright is a knuckleballer, and with that comes swings in results. We never know what we're going to get from day to day or even batter to batter and it's frustrating. Wright is no different from Wake or most other knuckleballers in that his ceiling is way up there and his floor is way down there. I see him as normally being a #4-5 pitcher who could throw a no-no on any day - which is better than most #4-5's, or he could get shelled on any day - which is consistent with most #4-5's. I'm good with that as a BOR pitcher. There's been talk about the effect a knuckleballer has on the opposing team the next day. Has anyone done any research on the effect of hitting against a more traditional pitcher who's relieving a knuckleballer?
  8. Well, I don't know what other Sox fans would say but I'd say if the umps had called the infield fly but I'd say it was the right call regardless of whether Hardy catches the ball. You say that Hardy screwed up again, so how did he screw up? Was it by calling for a ball that he couldn't catch or by failing to catch an infield fly?. IMHO when a player calls for a ball - this time near the top of its flight - he's saying that he's going to catch it, and the umpires should take his word for it and call the IF fly. The infield fly rule was instituted to prevent exactly what happened and the umpires dropped the ball on that play. Hardy's previous ineptitude doesn't justify not calling the infield fly on a ball that should have been caught "with ordinary effort" for a ML SS.
  9. Why isn't this a four out save opportunity for Kimbrel?
  10. I'm still holding out for Thorne being gang-raped by a bunch of homeless people and then left for dead.
  11. Didn't JBJ catch a ball hit to that very spot a couple of weeks ago?
  12. Is Kimbrel available tonight?
  13. ...and I don't even have to listen to them!!
  14. Ya know... one of the things that used to piss me off about the Yankees was that their announcers felt entitled to every close call and every benefit of doubt. AFAIC if Thorne and his understudy don't like Fenway Park they don't have to come back.
  15. LOL. Eck's bias is showing.
  16. ROFL. Gary Thorne at his best! OMG I'm glad I'm not listening to Thorne. He's worse than "Hall of Famer Joe Morgan."
  17. Not the worst idea I've heard all day. That is, if Hernandez is able to play SS. Of course, it's not going to happen.
  18. That's kind of a good point. We're getting neither so if we can get one or the other it's a plus. What a sad state of affairs that is. Ugh.
  19. I agree. It was a dreadfully bad call but it's the one that had to be made under the circumstances. This is the problem with "zero tolerance" in any situation. The good news - if there is any - is that MLB is making the statement that these two teams WILL rein it in.
  20. We're going to disagree on this. Hardy went back on the ball, then put his hand up like he was going to make the catch. That's when the umpires should have called the Infield Fly. While all of this was happening the runners were standing around waiting for the umpires to call the IF Fly... and they didn't. By the time they figured out that it wasn't going to be called it was too late. I can fault Moreland for not being awake on the bases and JBJ for not running the play out, but the umpires have some culpability here too.
  21. I still want Iggy back. Maybe if the Tigers are out of the race by the deadline..... [..and for those of you who want to pounce on this post... lighten up, guys! I know there are a dozen reasons why it probably won't happen. It's a tongue-in-cheek comment, which doesn't always carry well on line]
  22. It's all worth it if we win the WS. I think.
  23. IIRC Donaldson had become kind of a pain in the ass to the A's organization so they traded him. Much like Chris Sale in Chicago, only Sale commanded a better price.
  24. IMHO Pedroia was the least culpable of the three. He had to decide whether the ball was going to be caught or not. Had it been caught he would have been in the right place by standing on the bag. When it wasn't caught he was left standing on 1B, an easy force-out. My question now is what should they do the next time they're in the position of being on base and there being a popup that can reasonably be handled by an infielder. It's an all-or-nothing. They're either going to be very right or very wrong and if they're very wrong they're going to get a lot of criticism. For me this all goes back to the umpiring crew. When Hardy called for the ball the umpires should have declared it an Infield Fly. The purpose of the Infield Fly is to prevent exactly what happened to the Sox - being caught in a situation where there is no "right" thing to do. In this situation the umpires dropped the ball.
