  1. Now there's a low bar if I ever saw one!
  2. This team is doing almost as expected post-Papi. They're winning games with pitching and defense, just as predicted, and they're leading their division. No, they're not scoring as many runs as we'd hoped for but first place is still first place and the master plan has worked. Now the FO is panicking (for lack of a better word) and have decided that the team has to score more runs. Unfortunately the only viable way to possibly do that is by hurting the defense that got them into first place. Makes no sense.
  3. Not exactly. Marrero's offense sucks. But we're going to be worse defensively (a/k/a giving up more runs) with Devers there than Marrero. In terms of errors Devers 3B defense is 2017-Sandoval-esque and I can still remember how little I liked that.
  4. Only in that I can't come up with a better reason for it. The team is in first place and they got there by playing what they have. They're saying that they want to give Devers time to adjust to each level of play and suddenly they're promoting him at a breakneck pace. I don't see any need to panic but it does look panicky to me.
  5. I don't worry about it in terms of baseball. I just want them to take the field and play well. But it does have an impact on how much I "like" these players, which seems to bleed over into my overall attitude about the team.
  6. This is what happens when a player starts thinking he's bigger than the team. I agree with a700's recollection of what happened. Eck (in his own way) talked about Price's not covering the bag. Roughly quoted, 'Price didn't even cover the bag on that play!' "Man, he's got to get over there!'. 'But I've done that too'. I have no problem with a player taking exception to what someone says about him when it's not factual, but Eck was right. I have a bulletin for Mr. Price. Public criticism is part of the game when you're a professional athlete, and if you can't take the heat - especially when you were wrong - you should find another kitchen.
  7. Yep. One error every 4 1/2 games is a lot, and yet some folks are willing to overlook that in the hope that he can hit. :-( Devin Marrero has made 3 errors @ 3B in 49 games, or about 1 error every 16 games and has an OPS of .582. I know we're all involved in the Rafael Devers fan club here, but it makes no sense to me to replace good defense with bad defense and expect the offense to be so much better than it'll be a net gain. Is it a net gain if Devers OPS is .200 points higher than Marrero's but he makes even twice as many errors as Marrero? And if it's not a net gain, then why are we doing it? I'm not trying to blow Marrero's horn here - he is what he is - but I simply don't see Devers being a net gain.
  8. Is there a need to panic when you're leading your division with what you've got?
  9. I know.. I'm the guy here who keeps harping on defense, defense, defense so I'm still not sold on bringing Devers up. Does it make any sense to put a defensive liability at 3B because he can hit while moving a good glove out of that position because he can't hit? It looks like a wash to me. I understand that DD has probably been beating the bushes trying to find a player that can help this team on both sides of the ball at 3B and it's not easy to do when we don't have any trade chips that we're willing to part with. However, I think we're fooling ourselves is we think that a new 3B with no ML AB's is going to push us over the top. I agree with Kimmi. It seems like a panic move done at a time when there's no need to panic. We are still in first place in the division and we got there while Marrero was at 3B. Were it my decision I'd stay the course, at least until we fall out of first place.
  10. I hope this works out. What I keep thinking is that when Marrero/Lin took over at 3B we were ~3 games back in the AL East & now we have a 2 1/2 game lead. As much as this team needs a bat in the order I'm not sure that giving up Marrero's solid glove and weak bat to get Devers' unproven bat and suspect glove is a great idea. It seems to be of the mind of "Let's do something, even if it's not right."
  11. All true, but IMO he wasn't fired because of those moves. He was fired because he made those moves AND the team didn't win the WS.
  12. I wonder if DD would have been fired if the Tigers had won the WS while he was there. A GM can only do so much and it appeared that he had put together a team that could win it all. That's about all one can expect from a GM.
  13. Meh. He's gone to the NL. I don't care what he does unless we face him in the WS. Then I want him to be the Sandoval we here in RSN remember.
  14. So he gets the ML minimum from the Giants and the Sox pick up the difference.... right?
  15. That's a post I can get on board with. I've been saying for some time that this team has a lot of trouble hitting even mediocre pitching but they can kick the snot out of bad pitching.
  16. Then OPS is like WAR.
  17. I know the day is young yet, but that may be the post of the day.
  18. I've always thought that the "purpose" of that second guy was to prevent the dead time when the play-by-play guy didn't have anything to say. It's why I appreciated Scully as much as I did. He did a tremendous amount of research before each game to be able to fill the time, something the current announcers are too lazy to do. I have to wonder how Scully is adapting to retirement after all those years of being uber-involved in baseball. It has to be difficult for him...doesn't it?
  19. Can you say "Vin Scully"? The guy not only had that gift for telling you what's going on and making it interesting, he did it ALONE!
  20. LOL There is that!!!
  21. The only thing I ask about jerseys is that they not have both teams wearing the same color jerseys on the same day. I'm old and easily confused.
  22. There's about a five second delay. If I'm busy and not able to watch I'll have both the radio and the TV on, and if I hear Stiggy (et.al.) describe something on the radio that I want to see I run for the TV.
  23. I'm sure some stat geek will find one someplace. His arm is erratic, you know.
  24. As I've always said, JBJ could hit .200 and still win games for us.
