  1. THIS!!^^ TIRED?? More anecdotal evidence: When I was five years older than Beni I was playing 5 games a week with a doubleheader on weekends PLUS working full time to support a family. And I'll bet he's in a lot better shape than I was. Sorry, but I have no sympathy for "tired".
  2. Kimmie, would you like to handle this "fire and desire" and "spark" post for me? I think we've established by now that emotions play no part in a player's hitting. I'll be looking for "Fire" "Desire" and "Spark" dancing with "Mystique" and "Aura" at The Golden Banana. (Nothing personal, Moon. )
  3. That's pretty much it. If we're going to use him we first need to get him into some lower leverage situations. I was going to say then we can find out if he's "clutch" or not but... never mind. Whatever he is, he's ours and we need to get as much as we can out of him. It may be long relief (I'm hoping that's something we never need) or actual mop-up duty. Right now our pen is strong enough that we can afford to have a mop-up guy and leave the real relieving to someone who can do the job. Or he may get his feet under him and pitch well, but for God's sake, DO NOT put him in a high leverage situation again until he's pitching better than he has been!!
  4. Consider yourself forgiven... IF THE SOX WIN TONIGHT!
  5. I do hope you're right, but that's asking for a lot!
  6. The balance of power in that rivalry swung in 2004. My comment after Friday night's game about driving a stake through their cold hearts was a reflection of pre-2004. Now it's swung back the other way. Yes, the Sox will lose a close one occasionally like they did on Friday night, but on the whole the Sox have now become the f***ers and the Yankees the f***ees in closely contested games. I like this better.
  7. Ya. This is what I was thinking at the time, too. I know the Sox are leading the AL East by 5 1/2 this morning but there's still a serious power shortage on this team. Were it not for Beni and now Devers - both rookies - that shortage would be a lot worse. It may not be necessary to have power to win games but it's nice to have at least some power when a team is trailing by one or two runs late in the game. It's a lot easier to capitalize on one mistake pitch from a guy like Chapman than it is to string together two or three hits to score a run off him.
  8. Without trying to get into the debate about John Farrell, it's worth mentioning that Maddon was completely and utterly outmanaged by Francona in the WS last year but since the Cubbies won the WS Maddon is seen by some as an innovative genius. Ugh
  9. To get away from this discussion about Judge's appearance for a bit if I may... ... it seems that his weakness - the high fastball - has been exposed. I'm now wondering if he may be "too big" to be able to catch up with that pitch. Judge has to be able to get those long arms moving in time to bring the bat up and inside to hit that pitch, which isn't an easy thing to do. With pitches now approaching 100+ mph he may not be able to get to the high and tight pitch, or even the high one from the elite pitchers. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking. LOL
  10. Well, he's not that bad. Career .600 W/L, ERA ~4.00, Whip of 1.3xx. That's not "Ace" material but it's a solid #3-4 for good teams and a #2 for second division teams. Wright's "problem" is that he's a k-ball pitcher and we sometimes lack confidence in the k-ball.
  11. It's perception. There are some who'd say that the player with the bloop hits is the better player based on statistics, but there are also those who "know" that the guy who's hitting the line drives is probably the better player.
  12. Ok, that's fair, but I'll say that my comment about "soulless" was written somewhat tongue-in-cheek - which doesn't always 'carry' well on line. At the same time, I've known and continue to know many people who deal with numbers every day in their jobs and for many of them their reality seems to differ from the reality of other people. In short, they see more things as "cut and dried" while other people tend to take a wider - and more liberal - view of things. Neither approach is "correct". There's room for both approaches as long as both approaches are weighed equally.
  13. I'm willing to consider almost anything. What I'm not willing to do is to sell out 50 years of experience based on what statisticians say. At the risk of offending number-crunchers everywhere, number-crunchers are notoriously soulless. All they see are the numbers. I simply believe there's more to baseball than numbers and those things can't be quantified. It's why we say "Baseball is a funny game".
  14. I do hate to appear cynical about this, but relievers get paid by the save. The more saves they get the more money they get in their next contract. If Kimbrel comes in to pitch the 8th and someone else pitches the 9th Kimbrel gets a "Hold" but someone else gets the "Save". Do you see where I'm going here? I don't like that any more than anyone else does, but it's the way it is. And yes, once Reed got into trouble Kimbrel should have come in for the 8th.
  15. Absolutely right. Even if it had worked I'd be saying that it was a stupid thing to do, but I'm glad it worked.
  16. Sure, I'd be glad to. I was a tad anxious about bringing in Reed for the 8th, but I'll defer to JF's judgement on that. Once Reed had allowed the first two men to reach base I'd have brought in Craig Kimbel. In fact, I was essentially screaming at Farrell to do just that. Either bringing in Kimbrel to pu tout that forest fire would have worked... or it wouldn't, but I'll take my chances with Kimbrel over anyone else in that situation. I learned a long time ago to never take a win over the Yankees for granted, regardless of how big the lead is. That team is never dead until the last wooden stake is driven through their cold hearts. Then I'd worry about the 9th inning when it got there. That's consistent with what I've been saying for some time. A team should use its best pitcher in the biggest situations, regardless of the inning. That game was a great example of why that's the right thing to do.
  17. That's kinda harsh to put onto a guy whose biggest crime is making baseball judgments we don't agree with. I usually reserve "hate" for people who've repeatedly intentionally offended me personally or have severe personality flaws like molesting children or killing people so they can eat them. But I will admit that after last night's game I said to myself, "Farrell, you're one dumb f***. How could you let Craig Kimbrel sit in the bullpen while you piss this game away??"
  18. I've always liked Brentz. He's a poor man's Brandon Moss. I always thought of him as someone who's not a good outfielder but he's serviceable enough for a team that needs a bat. His AAA numbers look a lot better this year since he's allegedly tweaked his swing. This team could use a little power and it's looking like our choices are to either hope Moreland is out of his funk or hoping that Brentz can come up and contribute. The downside for Brentz is that there's no place on the team where I'd be comfortable with his defense where we can mix & match to make room for Moreland at 1B.
  19. ....and the award for UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE GAME goes to......
  20. Reed is going to screw ERod out of a win.
  21. If the criteria for MVP is "Where would this team be without him?" the hands-down winner will be Chris Sale.
  22. I guess you're more accepting of poor fundamentals than I am. I expect players at the high school level to be fundamentally sound. They may not have great skills at that level but I expect solid fundamentals at the least. So it pisses me off to see major league players who aren't exercising good fundamentals. And here's something else that pisses me off, too. These f***ing Yankee players who put the grease paint under their eyes and they stick the Yankees logo in it. What is this? A f***ing fashion show?
  23. Whoa there! I haven't been on the Fire Farrell bandwagon! I'm just sitting back quietly and seeing what develops on that front. BUT.. this team does have some flaws in their fundamentals and I DO think Farrell should address them.
  24. OMG I love watching JBJ play CF!
  25. I'll admit that I wanted to sign him at the time, but not for what the Y's paid for him.
