    IMO the best thing that could be said about signing Verlander now is that it would keep the Yankees from getting him.

    This is do-or-die weekend for the Yankees. They cannot afford a spit, and the argument can be made that they almost HAVE to win all four. If the two teams split the Sox will have 25 games left and a 5 1/2 game lead on Monday morning. If they can "split" (win 13) those remaining games the Yankees will have to go 19/26 just to tie them. IMO the Sox will win more than 13 of those 25 because of the HFA and the weakness of the teams they're playing. It's also below their season-long winning %-age. I see 13 as the minimum number they'll win and each one above that 13 makes the Yankees path that much harder. The Yankees desperately need a sweep this weekend but to get that they have to go through Chris Sale.

    I think I can pare your list down a bit. Davis is a no-brainer, primarily for his speed as a pinch runner but also because he's better than serviceable as our 4th OF'er. I don't want to see David Price on that roster based not only on his injury status but also because of his "small sample size" in the playoffs. Holt will probably make it because if his flexibility, but I see him as only playing in an emergency situation since we already have an extra IF'er and an extra OF'er. That leaves one spot to fill. That one will be filled by whatever someone does in September.

    I SO like this philosophy. It may not be the right thing to do statistically but I'd rather take the chance that a hot hand will remain hot than believe that a cold hand will suddenly turn hot.

    Right you are! He has a face made for radio, looking like something out of a horror movie, but he's great in the booth. He's welcome there anytime IMO.

    IMO the most difficult part of coming to Boston & playing in the outfield may be learning how to do "The Postgame Dance".

    In addition we're done with the Yankees after this upcoming series. The Y's have no control over their own destiny. They have to depend on everyone else to beat the Sox. I like it!!

    True enough, but now if we can come out of the Yankees series with a split we'll have at least a five game lead on Monday morning. Call me greedy - I want more - but I'd settle for a five game lead early in September.
