  1. Maybe I lit a fire under Beni!
  2. Me too. But it's also the classic response to a cramp in that leg. Let's hope for the best. In the meantime the only guy who's hitting the ball well right now is out of the game. :-(
  3. Do you have data to quantify the word "far"?
  4. JDM's catch is a good example of how a bad outfielder can make a routine catch look difficult. With our two regular OF'ers out there they'd have been circling around waiting for the ball to come down.
  5. I'll say this: It makes JDM's -68 UZR in RF look accurate.
  6. Get used to it. Ugh.
  7. And speaking of questions, did anyone notice that JDM is 108 'units of measure' worse in RF than in LF? People wonder why I question statistics.
  8. I don't care anything about sample size in this case. Any statistic that says that JDM has more range in LF than JBJ has in CF has a right to be called into question.
  9. I'm trying to find a way to defend Cora's defensive lineup and... it ain't easy. The best thing I can say for it is that Rogers Centre is symmetrical, 328-375-400-375-328 so it doesn't matter much where the weakest link goes.
  10. There's something wrong with this. Austin goes after Holt's leg, Holt says something to Austin and Austin gets in Holt's face for saying something. Kelly then drills Austin and gets a longer suspension than Austin did. Apparently Austin got a free pass for going after Holt's leg. f***ing Yankee Joe Torre playing Baseball God again. Ugh.
  11. It's official. Kelly's appeal was denied and he's going to serve a six game suspension. The suspension starts today and he'll be eligible next Wednesday Joe Kelly to serve 6-game suspension WWW.MLB.COM TORONTO -- The Red Sox will be without a key bullpen arm until Wednesday, as right-hander Joe Kelly's appeal of his six-game suspension was denied by Major League Baseball.Kelly's suspension started on Thursday night, the finale of a three-game series against the Blue Jays and a nine-game road trip.Kelly received
  12. UZR is someone else's eye test, but unlike those of us with regular eyes those "someone elses" have eyes that have been specially calibrated to detect range. Holt isn't nearly as bad as some here have made him out to be. I haven't noticed much (if any) drop off defensively with Holt at SS. But of course I just have regular eyes. Holt is also carrying around an .879 OPS and while it's not as outstanding as the 1.111 Bogaerts has, on the whole Holt has done a better than passable job as a fill-in SS.
  13. As I've said in the past, Butterfield and I have some friends in common and the story I got from one of these people is that once Farrell got fired the coaches were all told that there were no promises made regarding keeping the current coaching staff so if they got an offer from another team they may want to consider it. Over the next couple of months Butterfield got offers from four teams (Arizona, Florida, one I can't remember, and when the Cubs made an offer he accepted it. I don't know what the timeline was regarding his signing with the Cubs as it pertains to signing Feebles but if Cora had been pro-active and wanted Butterfield it probably could have happened.
  14. Here's my issue with it in retrospect, which always gives a better perspective than 'real time'. :-) I can understand that the umpire was in Beni's line of sight, but that's when he should have asked the 3B coach for help. The coach being able to go up and down the baseline as far as he wants could have seen the catch being made and told Beni when to go. IMO not retaining Butterfield was a mistake. I have no "evidence" that Butterfield would have done it any better but he certainly couldn't have done it any worse!
  15. So the umpire was standing in the way. Man.. if it's not something it's something else.
  16. Devers performance tonight - or rather the lack of it - is ironic after the way Cora bragged about him in the pregame show. (and as I'm typing this Devers makes a nice play on a deflected ball! LOL
  17. Devers issues at 3B may be part of the fallout from not having Butterfield with the team. It's said that he's the absolute best at working with infielders to perfect their footwork and positioning.
  18. LOL "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."
  19. Then it logically follows that your bias toward statistics and data factor into your assessment of players - whether you're aware of it or not. After all, it's human nature. When both parties can agree with that we can respect one another and have meaningful and respectful conversations about the value of statistics vs. baseball experience.
  20. You really need to read - and comprehend - what the "cranky old guys" say. It's obvious that you need to have the last word so... congratulations. You've got it!
  21. It's a generational thing. The "cranky old guys" know that they don't have all the answers to all the questions but they respect the opinions of others.
  22. Exactly. You put that better than I did.
  23. To all those people who thought sending Nunez in the 9th was a bad decision, Was it also a "bad decision" when the Jays sent a runner from 3rd in the second inning that allowed a run to score when Devers threw to the wrong side of the plate? That run and the run subsequent to it are what allowed the game to go into extra innings where the Jays eventually won. I have no problem with Nunez trying to score at that point. Yes, there was adequate time to have Nunez thrown out (obviously) but sometimes it's worthwhile to gamble on an errant throw.
  24. And OTOH a person with a lifetime of playing and coaching might be able to assess a player's strengths and weaknesses without consideration of which team they play for. There are a lot of "mights" in this world. Some people might be so deeply invested in mathematics and data that they forget that there's a human side to baseball too and consequently forget that not everything in baseball is mathematically quantifiable.
  25. 3 cheap runs. Unfortunately they all count.
