  1. Yeah, sorry, but this is absurd, unless Bloom is smoking the shroom: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/01/padres-discussing-mookie-betts-trade-with-red-sox.html "The main stumbling block in trade talks is how much of Myers’ contract the Red Sox would be covering,*Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune*reports, as the Padres want Boston’s obligation “to be much closer to the full value of the contract.”* The prospects reportedly being discussed in the trade aren’t any of San Diego’s “top five minor leaguers,” which would mean the likes of Gore or Patino aren’t involved."
  2. I was kind of curious what this comment means. You'd have to have pretty extreme expectations to find fault with Pedey's pre-Machado career.
  3. If I believed this was true, I'd probably feel more urgency to move Mookie for whatever we can get, but -- silly homer that I am -- I don't. A gimpy rotation and thin bullpen may prove to be our downfall, but I see no reason to think that a team with a $200+ million payroll and a lineup anchored by Betts (assuming he stays put), Martinez, Bogaerts, and Devers should not be going for it.
  4. I...volunteer to assist MLB in this investigation.
  5. Sounds like they're not too concerned about moving him unless another team goes crazy, and I'm okay with that. If you're going to move Mookie Betts, the asking price should be ridiculous...you're not getting the best non-Trout position player in baseball for a collection of spare parts and middling prospects. If that means he has to stay put, then I'm content to suffer through another 7-10 WAR season in 2020.
  6. Blame Choom!
  7. It still feels like a cheap LHH addition (maybe even a Moreland reunion) is coming at some point.
  8. Sad. I still believe he was a great fit for this city and team, and before all of this I would have bet on him managing the Red Sox for a long time. After yesterday, I don't know how this could have gone any differently, though.
  9. If Varitek really wanted to coach/manage as much as fans assume he does, wouldn't he have a job as such by now? The Red Sox (to say nothing of the rest of the league) have hired multiple bench coaches, managers, etc. since his retirement without him interviewing or emerging as a serious candidate for any of those openings. Even if he was interested, it would seem foolish of the Red Sox to throw a novice into the mess that will surely follow a Cora firing. Roenicke will make a fine interim choice until Bloom has a chance to anoint his own guy.
  10. It doesn't sound like Luhnow had much knowledge of or involvement in the scheme in Houston, and he was still considered culpable. I imagine the same standards would apply to Dombrowski, who was warned in 2017 after the Apple Watch affair and thus should have been extra vigilant in ensuring nothing similar happened under his watch again. And while our infractions may not have been as egregious as Houston's, somehow I don't think that's going to help us much here. I hope I'm wrong (mostly because I don't relish the thought of losing this summer's #17 pick and others), but the Sox are now a two-time offender, and Manfred/MLB seem to be out for blood here.
  11. Cora is going down no matter what at this point, it seems, but I'm also very interested in the question of what Dombrowski knew and when he knew it (which I assume Manfred's eventual report will address). Could have serious implications if he wants to work in the sport again.
  12. Damn. Bye Cora...it was nice knowing you.
  13. David Price player-manager.
  14. Spring training is going to be hella awkward if Cora's punishment hasn't been determined by then.
  15. Ron Roenicke? FWIW, Jeff Passan is saying Cora's suspension "is bound to be far longer" than the 1 season that Luhnow and Hinch are getting...
  16. From what I'm seeing on Twitter, Cora's name is all over the Astros report, and that's before MLB even completes its investigation into the Red Sox. Not looking good.
  17. Holy s***...yeah, I don't know if we'll be seeing Cora for a while. Losing our first-round pick (#17 this year, I believe) might suck most of all, IMO. The system could really use a shot at an impact player from that spot.
  18. While Henry's snark to Shaughnessy was funny, perhaps he ought to go back and reread his own comments from September before trying to make all the luxury tax discussion out to be a creation of the media. I doubt anyone would be talking about the Red Sox resetting right now if he had not come out and publicly stated their "need" to do so...even the much-quoted walking-back by Kennedy described it as a "goal." Personally, I've expressed my skepticism several times this offseason that the Red Sox will follow through with getting under the tax line (and in fact argued that right now would be the wrong time to do so), so I have zero issues with this latest news if true...I'm just not sure how much credence any statements from Henry on the subject deserve deserve to be given at this point. (The line about "reminding" baseball ops that being competitive is the goal was strange, too, fwiw, though I'm unsure what, if anything, to read into it.)
  19. Is Price supposed to be going in that trade, too? Feels light for Betts alone... (although I have not consulted the almighty trade value simulator)
  20. The current cabal seems to like to play things close to the vest (recall that there was virtual silence on the Dombrowski replacement search right up until the Bloom hiring was a done deal), which is why I think it would be a mistake to interpret the near complete absence of public rumors so far as evidence that they aren't working on anything or don't have a plan.
  21. That's the grand question, isn't it?
  22. Quite true. There is no award for having your roster finalized by Christmas, as much as fans might like it to be so. Given the situation he inherited and what is being asked of him this winter, I'm still inclined to give Bloom a year or two at minimum before really trying to judge his performance...certainly longer than a month or two, in any case.
  23. Family who don't follow baseball as obsessively as I do: So what's going on with the Red Sox this offseason? Me: So you see, after the Senate raised taxes on trade routes, the Trade Federation decided to blockade -- no, wait, that's the backstory to The Phantom Menace.
  24. Forget robot umps...all hail the Robot GM.
