  1. Rumor is the Nats are close to getting Sale. Lucas Giolito 22 y.o. RHP (ranked 5th by BA/4th midseason and 3rd by BP) --for those of you crapping on Espi's numbers, this guy had a 4.69 ERA at AA this year (71 IP). Plus Vjctor Robles 19 y.o. OF (ranked 33rd by BA/13th midseason and 29th by BP) Hard to match that. --.741 at A+ ball this year (198 PAs)
  2. Well, spending $44M on Price and Kimbrel is on DD. I think, if we reset the luxury tax this winter, Henry will give the okay to go over next winter, when the market is full of gems.
  3. I think we would get a nice return. The luxurt tax savings should be considered. Saving $10-13M would mean we could add a FA or two.
  4. Agree, or Adam Lind.
  5. David Ortiz was MLB's best hitter vs RHPs from 2015-2016. That is the one more specific area we look to need help with. Young has been one of baseball's best hitters vs LHPs, so we probably could get by with a decent LH'd bat to platoon with Young. Although Matt Holliday hits righties equally well, I don't see why our team keeps being linked to guys like Napoli. He's been pretty bad vs RHPs. 2013-2016 1Bmen vs RHPs (30 players with 900+ PAs) 5) EE .913 11) Lind .845 14) Hosmer .811 15) Alvarez .804 18) Ramirez .778 19) C Carter .776 21) B Moss .767 22) Moreland .766 27) Morrison .734 29) Napoli .725 Narrow to 2015-2016 (32 1Bmen with 600+ PAs): Napoli finsihed 31st out of 32 with a .718 OPS vs RHPs. He was 5th vs LHPs at .883. Unless we plan on platooning Young in the OF, I don't get the interest in Naps.
  6. It makes some sense, but I'm wondering what Adam Lind, Pedro Alvarea or Brandon Moss will cost. If it's close to what Smith makes, then I'd just sign one of them and trade Buch for a low cost RPer or decent prospect, if we need cap space.
  7. I've read several writers saying that if the CWS trade Sale, they should trade the players I'm not supposed to mention for a week.
  8. Agreed. How far behind were they to begin with? IMO, Moncada is still close in value.
  9. Napoli's defense took a turn for the worse this year. We need a LH'd hitter. I've always liked Napoli. I suggested we trade for him long before we signed him, but I don't see him as the answer.
  10. Waiting until the deadline to trade Buch only saves about $4.5M out of the $13.5M contract.
  11. I'll be surprised, if we get Sale. I'm hoping once Sale is traded, the real CWS fire sale starts, and we swoop in for Quintana and possibly others.
  12. The Lowrie and Weiland trade for Melancon looks much better now, especially had we kept him and not traded him for Hanrahan & Holt.
  13. Seeing what Melancon is going to get paid by the Giants ($62M/4) makes me wonder what we could get for Kimbrel in trade... probably better than Margot, Guerra and Allen. We'd then have to use Buch or Kelly as a closer, which could become very scary. However, add Kimbrel's $10.5M lusury tax cost to the $10M we have, and maybe we could fill 2-3 needs this winter with low profile players. I'm not saying I want to trade Kimbrel, but word is a lot of teams are in on Chapman and Jansen, so the losers might get desperate enough to significantly overpay for Kimbrel.
  14. Wow! Melancon to get over $15M x 4! Make you wonder what Chapman and Jansen will get. Hill $16M x3 Good for him!
  15. I think we look for a LH'd platoon DH with Young as the RH'd DH. Lind, Alvarez, Moss or others could come relatively cheap.
  16. Baseball America had Moncada as #1 in their mid season rankings. While Turner (5) and Swanson (7) put up nice numbers in the bigs afterwards, I doubt Moncada's ranking was significantly affected by his tiny MLB sample size. More likely, his .910 OPS at AA strengthened scouts' opinion of him.
  17. 300 some odd PAs is not really a big enough sample size to project forward. He had an .821 OPS at AAA in 576 PAs and an .860 OPS at AA in 295. All totaled, his minor league OPS is .840 in 1192. PAs. Moncada's minor league numbers are a smaller sample size, and he skipped AAA, so it's hard to compare, but he has an .875 OPS in 854 PAs, including .910 at AA in 207 PAs.
  18. Maybe the DH role will help minimize his lost time. I think he's only played 183 games over the last 2 years.
  19. It took a while, but good management has finally gotten a grip on the budget.
  20. Well, many ranking services still have Moncada ranked higher, so maybe his upside is higher. What concerns me more is his fielding and lack of "owning" a clear position. All those sample sizes listed above are pretty small, especially Moncada's.
  21. That's a lot. Also, remember the luxury tax is set on the average cost of each contract- not the seasonal salary.
  22. He does hit both handed pitching exactly equally over his career..
  23. It's going to be the auction of the century.
  24. I get the concern on Sale, but he still had great numbers even with reduced velocity. He's shown he can be a pitcher not a thrower. One has to think that once Sale is traded, Quintana might be on the block. I mean why stop there, if you are in rebuild mode. What has not been discussed is who else is part of these packages. If it's just Moncada for Sale, then I'd be leaning towards doing it, but they might want JBJ too. I might give Swihart, Moncada, Owens, Hembree and Pablo (and cash) for Sale and Frazier. The money paid on Pablo would be just enough to keep us under the luxury limit, if we traded Buch for a low cost RP'er or two. I think Sale + Frazier = $13.5M, so that balances out Buch's contract. We could pay $10M of Pablo's $19M a year and still be under the limit. That might not be enough to a team looking to rebuild and talking on Pablo's problems, but it's probably close.
