These very early stats suggest that not walking batters might be the most important stat for pitching stats-- Mets, 3 walks (best in MLB), ERA 2.25 Twins, 7 walks (2d best), ERA 2.00 Yankees, 9 walks (3d best), ERA 1.70 Phillies, 11 walks (tied for 4th best), ERA 1.46 Braves, 11 walks (tied for 4th best), ERA 2.81 Padres, 11 walks (tied for 4th best), ERA 2.20. And here's the five MLB teams pitching staffs with the most BB's given up-- Angels, 21 walks, ERA 5.00 Rockies, 23 walks, ERA 5.75 Diamondbacks, 23 walks, ERA 4.91 Tigers, 24 walks, ERA 6.75 A's, 25 walks, ERA 8.60

Angels, 52 K's, ERA 5.00 Padres, 51 K's, ERA 2.20 Phillies, 46 K's, ERA 1.46 Pirates, 45 K's, ERA 4.36 Reds, 44 K's, ERA 4.50 Brewers, 43 K's ERA 4.75 Jays, 43 K's, ERA 2.50 Twins, 42 K's, ERA 2.00 Yankees, 42 K's, ERA 1.70 Red Sox, 41 K's, ERA 4.50 I'm satisfied that moonslav is right to caution against K's. Interesting about the dingers, however. The Sox have given up none.     1 or 2, true. It seemed like no outs, and it sure seemed to be the beginning of a deluge until Hernandez got that K followed by Ottavino getting a K for out 3. It was 7-2 Sox with Tampa having the bases full with one out when Adames struck out for out 2. Alternatively, a soft pop dropping in or a grounder with eyes could have made it 7-3 (or 7-4) with 1 out and 2 or 3 on base.

    I like that first sentence and was about to say something similar. That said, however, I think the cold weather in those games helped pitchers on both sides because the hitters looked like they were playing at Ice Station Zebra. On the other hand, Sox pitchers did well last night with the temp in the 50's.

    Actually, he was really, really mad--at both the Sox and MLB with their blackout restrictions. I see no further need for this thread. Last night's win was most encouraging. Maybe the Sox hitters needed warmer weather.

    I didn't say it on the game thread, but I thought Cora was an idiot for not pulling Andriese sooner. I thought leaving him in for the 7th was fine with that lead, but staying with him in the 8th so that he could load the bases with no one out was foolhardy. Cora was lucky. Of course, Napoleon really did say the would rather have a lucky general under his command than a smart one. Maybe luck is the residue of design.
