    With Arroyo likely out (and on the IL), I see this lineup tonight against righty Stripling: Hernandez 2b, Verdugo LF, JDM DH, Bogey SS, Devers 3b, Renfroe RF, Duran CF, Plawecki C, and Dalbec 1b. Verdugo, Devers, and Duran all bat lefty. Against Pivetta, the Jay are going with: Semien 2b, Bichette SS, Guerrero 1B, Springer CF, Henandez RF, Grichuk DH, Biggio 3B, Gurriel LF, McGuire C. Biggio and McGuire bat lefty, all others righty.

    Not only that, by Arroyo has proven to be solid in the field at 2b. In any case, with Arroyo almost certain to go to the IL, that looks like Duran stays in CF for now, Hernandez goes to 2b and Dalbec keeps 1b.

    Excuse me. Did you just compare April 2020 to April 2021 as proof that NYC is going down the tubes crime-wise? My guess, without any data, is that April 2020 was very possibly a record low because of COVID. Get back to me when you have annual stats for NYC for either 2020 or 2021 so we can compare them to 2017. I have a subscription to the NY Times and have not read anything about this humoungous crime spree. Did they get rid of their city/local section?

    Saturday night game was played in steady rain which by the 5th inning had produced puddles. Starters Cole and Eovaldi handled the rain pretty well--each giving up 1 run, but Cole also pitched the 6th inning when he struck out 3, but also gave up 2 walks and a single. Sawamura then pitched the bottom of the 6th when the rain was at its hardest and gave up 2 dingers despite his ERA of 2.43 and going against a suspect Yankees lineup. But let's assume Whitlock pitched the 6th and came through unscathed. It is a certainty the game would have been called after 6 as in fact it was. The logical time to finish game 2 would have been yesterday when the Yankees hitting and pitching dominated the Sox. Indeed, in games 2 and 3 of this series, the Yankees hit 4 dingers and scored 12 runs to the Sox 0 dingers and 2 runs. So, yes, I think it's a huge stretch to claim the Sox win game 2 if Whitlock pitches the 6th--when the game was already tied--instead of Sawamura.

    I always keep the sound off for espn and fox broadcasts of Sox games. Espn Hqs has been in Bristol, CT for 40 years, plus the Yankees have bigger marquee value than the Sox despite the fact that Sox have won 4 WS, 2002 to the present, and the Yankees have won 1. ESPN also loves the Duke basketball team and Coach Krzyzewski.

    Game was tied when Sawamura came in. Given how abysmal the Sox hitting has been in the last 2 games (Sat and Sun nights), I think it's a big stretch to assume they were going to score again Saturday night or whenever the game was continued.

    I disagree that "failure to hustle" was real. That was a dangerous wall he was running toward. However, either in the same game or another recent one, he failed to catch a good throw from Devers, and that is inexcusable. He is currently rated (DWAR) as the worst defensive firstbaseman in MLB. So there are two good reasons to play Dalbec less.

    Pirates score 6 in the 1st against the Mets and get 3 in on a dribbler down the 3d base line that the umpire called fair. The Mets were so mad at the call they forgot to play ball and the dribbler brought home 3 runs. ' But the Mets score 7 runs, the last two on a top of the 9th dinger and won the game without their manager Rojas who was thrown out way back in the 1st.

    The pitching was demonstrably not AAA. Cole, for example, is one of the best starters in MLB. Season to date, the Yankees have the 4th best ERA in the AL.

    Ball game. Series. Hopefully, not the season, but there can be no question the Sox are slipping badly and now must face a semi-hot Jays team.

    Since I disagreed with a big chunk of your post, I have to also say that I think your thoughts on Devers are the soul of wisdom and that for him it's hitting and everything else as well. He has in fact been carrying a heavy load this season, not just with his great hitting, but also his improved defense and his desire to contribute in every possible way, including on the basepaths. He wants to lead this team as a complete player who nevertheless is still learning and developing.

    Could somebody please explain to me why Perez is so highly regarded when Cora has to pull him after 62 pitches against a weak Yankees lineup? I just looked at the detailed summary on the mlb app, and it's clear he needed to be pulled even though he was only charged with 3 runs (all earned). It seems to me that Cora does not have much confidence in Perez.

    Ahem. All due respect, but I think I should remind you that Ted Williams was interested in one thing and one thing only, hitting--and he said so often. He wasn't interesting in fielding or running the bases or any other ancillary skills. Just hitting. But forget Williams and just look at how many pitches are thrown in a game vs. how many balls are put in play. And my goodness the increasing importance of getting a walk or giving one up--both of which involve nothing but the pitcher and batter and no one else.

    Well, guess what? You got your wish and this lineup was/is a complete bust--against Taillon and his 4.60 ERA.

    Tonight's game suggests--only that--that one guy can't fix the Sox pitching and hitting issues.

    So true. In 2012 he had another injury-plagued season and in 2013 a bonafide, this is the real Ellsbury season with a .781 OPS (his career OPS is .760). Just shows how desperate the Yankees were to replace Cano's bat.

    And let's not forget that a decimated Yankees lineup scored 3 runs last night and another 5 tonight--and hit 2 dingers both nights.

    Perhaps. But what about the other 8 bats in the lineup? Indeed, Dalbec didn't start this game. Meanwhile, Hernandez, Verdugo, Devers, Renfroe, Duran and Arroyo are all hitless.

    I hear you but honestly think baseball is unique in the centrality of the confrontation between pitcher and hitter. All else--baserunning, defense, etc--are secondary to that. The Sox lineup has simply stopped hitting. Last night the Sox pitching, except for Sawamura, was pretty good, but Cole owned our hitters, especially JDM and Devers who both struck out too often and in key situations.

    Dalbec is the least of our problems. Any reason given on why he replaced Arroyo? Correction: I just read Arroyo hurt his leg.

    I apologize for this OP, which was a lousy attempt at reverse mojo. The simple fact is that the weak hitting has lingered from last night and from before the ASG. Plus overall the Yankees do have pretty good pitching, especially the bullpen. Agree on comments about Devers hitting. I missed most of the game because I was at a family dinner, which was great fun.
