    I doubt it. Umps are much better today than back in Ted's era simply because they use those rectangles to teach/train the strike zone.

    No, not that. I just like the job they do and think we are over-reacting to what we see on the TV screen when the rule book shows that the strike zone is actually hard to define because the human body is.

    Houck in for the 6th inning. Here's hoping for 2 or 3 good innings and a handoff to Whitlock. Tonight is the right game to be lavish with bullpen arms because everyone is on 4 days rest and gets another day off Sunday.

    Vazquez has to be looking for a fastball on pitch 5. Give the kid credit--a slider for a strike. Too bad Vazquez swung at #6, but at least he moved the runner.

    OK. Good sacrifice. Homeplate ump was blocked and couldn't see the tag, thus the successful appeal.

    Whoops. But caught anyway. Ottavino and Taylor both mixed in some sliders, but Brasier was going with heat and more heat, which can be risky against the Astros. On to the 6th inning.

    I know you are and I know they were because of course that little rectangle is never wrong. Oh, the injustice of it!

    It sure looked that way. On the other hand, there are also occasions when both players "get out of the way" and the ball drops in.

    I didn't see Cora racing out onto the field or even shouting at the ump. So I'm assuming that, the neat little rectangle on your screen notwithstanding, those strikes were close enough. Plus, you know, the rule book says it's a strike when the ump calls it a strike.

    Agree. Plus he's been a real boost to the lineup for about 2 months.

    Javier showed 3 pretty good pitches--fastball, slider, curve--and good command. His game log says he routinely goes 2 innings, and 5 days ago he did 2.2 scoreless innings vs. the White Sox.

    Schwarber K's when a ground out could have moved a runner to 3b. Not his night.
