    So, Dalbec for Casas. Before the season started, I would have bet on Casas to hit well this year. Shows what I know.

    Couldn't score???? Anybody who's gotten on base has celebrated afterward as though they'd hit a grand slam--and by "who" I mean Sox so-called hitters.

    Great 7 innings by the Sox pitching and, dare I say it, defense. Hitting, not so much. I rarely say this, but tonight the home plate ump has definitely given the close ones to Tampa and not to the Sox. However, even with that advantage, Tampa has not scored in 7 innings.

    Yep. Good field, no hit means "not in Boston." The Sox are fine with a good hitter who can also field, but hitting uber alles.

    Used to be, "no news is good news," but not on something like this. Jarren Duran is reportedly on his way to or already in Tampa.

    Fair enough. One game at a time. Tampa has some great stats--pitching and hitting--to go with the 9-0 record, but they have played Washington, Detroit, and Oakland. Spotrac says the four lowest team payrolls in MLB belong to the Pirates, Rays, Orioles, and, at the bottom, the A's. Sox payroll has dropped to 14th and Detroit's is 19th. Here's another stunner. Of the Rays 9 straight wins, 6 have been at the Trop, where so far the averaged attendance--to watch the red hottest team in all of MLB--has been 17,945, ranked 26th. It should be 27th, but Toronto hasn't played a home game yet. Sox home attendance, also six games, is 17th--29,114.

    Very sensible. I'm with moonslav in thinking the pitching will in fact improve. Klubar and Sale both stunk in their first starts and then came right back with decent starts the second time around. I think they will be OK, but we'll just have to see. I see no hope for Crawford, but know both Whitcomb and Bello are on their way back and have pitched well against non-MLB lineups. I also have doubts about Houck and Pivetta, but both have had decent starts. Undercutting the pitching so far has been an absolutely dreadful defense who/which (Devers and McGuire) caused two of the four losses to date. Hernandez already has 3 errors at SS. On top of that, not much range in the outfield, nor especially good arms. Baserunning is also so-so. But, if the pitching--including an improved bullpen--and hitting are OK, the Sox could finish above .500.

    Meh. Think of it as a rain out without the hassle. I remember telling my wife that MLB teams always play on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays--and sometimes on Mondays and Thursdays. But of course every "rule" is made to be broken.

    To which "we" do you refer? I ask because the attendance for the final home game of the six game opening homestand was 24,477. Opening game a week earlier was 36,049. I freely admit I have whined a ton this season so far and vastly prefer moonslav's more upbeat attitude. But I got into the whiny habit during the last 54 years of the 86 year curse. Right now, I'm pretty happy with yesterday's win even though the defense continues to stink. The pitching could indeed be coming around, and the offense, except for those lousy 26 innings vs the Pirates, could be OK even though the 3, 4, and 5 batters (Turner, Yoshiba, and Duvall) are brand new. For that matter, none of Casas, Arroyo, and McGuire/Wong have been regulars before this season. The rotation has also been reconstructed--with probably more to come (Whitlock, Bello).

    If you ain't over-reacting, you ain't a real fan, which is short for fanatic, which means obsessed and irrational. Love how the Sox are playing today. Sale had some good innings. Brasier got 3 outs in the 8th with a 3 run lead. Sox scored 6 terrific runs with dingers by Devers and Duvall--so my endless whining about the putrid offense is looking pretty lame, I'm happy to say. With Klubar and Sale both having decent 2d starts, I'd say moonslav's prediction of a decent rotation is looking pretty sensible because we still haven't seen Whitlock and Bello. Bullpen looks OK too. Defense and baserunning abysmal, but not insurmountable.

    Definite competitive. I ask because I think this one right now could be. Klubar and Sale have both come back nicely after horrible starts. Pivetta and Houck had decent first starts. Only Crawford stinks. Meanwhile, Whitcomb and Bello, both better than Crawford, are due back within a week. I don't expect much from Paxton, but he's lurking out there in the twilight zone. Indeed, I would argue the worst part of this year's rotation is that stinking defense behind them. McGuire and Devers both made egregiously bad plays (but Devers' was so bad it wasn't an error because he never got a glove on the ball) to give up 5 gift runs. Hernandez already has 3 errors and has made zero excellent plays at SS. The outfield has no range and no arms. I also think the bullpen could be better this year.

    Horrible at bat for Turner. Just terrible. Gotta bring Devers home with one out.

    OK, that's it. Sale needs to rely on his sinker, changeup, and slider--and use that worthless fastball as a waste pitch. He looked really good in the 5th--even with Hernandez committing his 3 freaking error this season. The Sox defense reminds me of what Casey Stengal reportedly said about the Mets, I think in their first season as a brand new franchise: "doesn't anybody here know how to play this game?"

    Note to moonslav. Looks like the pitching will be OK. But, just as you said, they have to do better than other pitchers on teams with decent defenses. This team's defense stinks.

    I said this on another thread. Historically, the Sox have relied heavily on simply buying pitchers. That has certainly been true in the John Henry era. The Rays, on the other hand, won't even pay to keep a really good starter--and year in and year out they have pretty good pitching, with or without an ace. As recently as last freaking season John Henry was shelling out pretty big bucks for two pitchers--Price and Sale--who were of no use to the Sox. So, 1) you are blaming the wrong guy; and 2) I'm inclined to agree with JH. Don't shell out big bucks for someone who the day after he's signed might need a new freaking elbow or whatever.
