  1. First, for someone like Farrell who has been in baseball for as long as he has been, you would think that he would know that once a pitcher has thrown one pitch to a batter, that pitcher can not be removed for a relief pitcher until the at-bat is completed, except of course in the event of an injury to the pitcher. To come out of the dugout with that intent, and having the umpire remind him of that rule is embarrassing. Secondly, much as I had hoped for a sweep, which the Sox would have achieved had not the pen imploded with a 3-0 lead in the 8th inning of the 1st game, I still think that this was a really great 3-game series from a purely baseball standpoint. Two very good teams battling to the final out.
  2. Are you seriously suggesting that Bogaerts gets benched in favor of Nunez?
  3. If you call up Brentz, (and insert him in the lineup) who goes to the bench? Do you breakup the outfield trio of the 3 B's? Or sit Hanley and let Brentz take over DH? If he's not going to get regular playing time, is it not in his best interest to remain in Pawtucket where he can further hone his skill set?
  4. I've just tuned in. Who's in the booth with OB?
  5. I've read conflicting reports as to whether Pedey was present and backed Price or not in the immediate vicinity and had no role in this episode. Can someone please present a reliable source on what transpired as to Pedroia's position?
  6. So reportedly he is scheduled to play in the 2nd game in Seattle on Tuesday. Then there is another game on Wednesday in Seattle followed by 3 games at Fenway against the Royals before the trade deadline. What he does in those 5 games will obviously influence what DD does or doesn't do pertaining to the 3B situation for the rest of the season. I just don't get it. Such a short leash. I wish they had brought Devers up directly from AA, rather than the 34 AB's at AAA Pawtucket, thus allowing for a more extended evaluation period before the trade deadline. I think this is an indication that if Devers produces he will become the regular 3B. If he falters, they'll alternate Brock, Marrero, and Lin through the rest of the season.
  7. Gee it's a shame. I've been so impressed with Marerro's play at 3B. Among many to date, the play he made today, which Timlin described as Brooks Robinson-esque, was superb and saved a run or two. And he did get a key hit in today's game. But, alas, he just does not seem to have the consistent plate appearances that this team presently needs. He may not turn into a Manny Machado, but if the Sox trade him, do not be surprised if he becomes an integral part of some NL team, if not at 3B than at SS.
  8. So am I correct in surmising that what we're presently looking at is a rotation of : Sale Price Porcello Pomeranz Rodriguez
  9. That was truly a monster shot over everything!
  10. There are many who would agree that DiMaggio would not have misplayed that ball hit to center field. But give Hall of Famer Enos 'Country' Slaughter his due by unhesitatingly making that 'Mad Dash' from first all the away around the bases to score. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7cup8gGMLE
  11. As a fan of close to 70 years, IMO there's never been a season quite like 1967. Notwithstanding 2004, 1967 was a once in a lifetime experience. To capture some additional insight, on Youtube click on 1967 Red Sox. There are a wide assortment of film clips that will thrust you back into that euphoric season.
  12. I'd be just as happy if the Sox reverted to the 75 uni's all season long.
  13. I'll be the first to concede that the Sox brass have more information on Devers and have more experience in evaluating players than this humble fan, but I find these stats interesting. I understand that the Sox do not want to rush this young player and I'm not suggesting that Devers would respond with the same production that Bellinger is now providing the Dodgers in his rookie year. On the other hand he might be the 'lightning in a bottle' that could provide added impetus to the second half of the season. ----------------------------------------G AB HR RBI BA OBP OPS Cody Bellinger Minors (5 seasons) 361 1332 65 253 .271 .353 .853 Rafael Devers Minors (4 seasons) 391 1524 48 256 .296 .354 .837
  14. I'm inclined to agree with you.
  15. All right sports fans, do you bring Sale out for the 8th inning, or do you go to the bullpen?
  16. I've forgotten which game it was, but I recall it was late in the season. A fellow was in traffic heading home from work one afternoon and was listening to an afternoon Sox game on his car radio. As he approached the entrance to the tunnel, the radio announcer (it may have been Ned Martin or Ken Coleman) described Yaz advancing to the plate late in the game with runners on base with the Sox behind in a close scoring game. Knowing that he'd loose radio reception in the tunnel, the fellow stopped his car right there at the entrance to the tunnel. Naturally this caused a major traffic jam with numerous cars behind him vigorously honking their horns. The fellow gets out of his car and hollers back, "Yaz is up with two men on". The word was then passed back through the long line of cars, and the honking horns quickly subsided. The guy proceeded to call out pitch by pitch which was passed back while everyone in the long line of cars patiently waited for the conclusion of Yaz's at bat. I wish I could remember the result of the at bat, but it was so long ago. However, the traffic following his at bat immediately resumed through the tunnel with no recorded complaints.
  17. I'm truly hoping that some kind member of Sox Nation records this show in its entirety and downloads it to Youtube.
  18. There's a documentary that premieres this Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on MLB Network. The title is "Impossible Dream: Red Sox Nation Begins," I watch each and every Sox game via my subscription to MLB.com but unfortunately this show is not accessible through MLB.com and sadly I do not have MLB Network channel on my TV. Does anyone know of an alternative venue to watch this program.
  19. If opportunities, namely save opportunities in games that the Sox lead by 3 runs or less, do not come about during a stretch of Sox blowouts coupled with losses, then it's paramount to get him some work to stay sharp and not get 'rusty'.
  20. Brock Holt has been playing in games this week and doing rather well. I think we'll see him activated after the All Star break and it may well mean a trip to Pawtucket for Lin.
  21. How can you not love Deven Marrero at 3b. If he can keep his BA consistently in the .250 neighborhood, he should have a steady job. IMO! Also, this kid Lin strikes me as a 'ballplayer'. The question is where does he fit in on this roster, particularly after Brock Holt returns.
  22. On April 26, 1952, the Boston Celtics selected Conley with the 90th pick of the NBA draft. Playing 39 games as a rookie in the 1952-53 NBA season, Conley averaged about 12 minutes a game for a Celtics team that went 45-26 in the regular season under Red Auerbach. Conley did not play in the Celtics' two playoff series that season, with the team losing 3-1 in the Eastern Division finals to the New York Knicks. After a five-year hiatus to focus on baseball with the Milwaukee Braves, Conley returned to the Celtics for the 1958-59 season, again seeing limited usage at about 13 minutes a game for a team that swept the Minneapolis Lakers 4-0 in the NBA finals. Conley averaged 4.2 points and 5.4 rebounds during the regular season and 4.9 points and 6.8 boards in the playoffs. Conley would have his best year as a Celtic the following season, averaging nearly 19 minutes a game during the regular season to score 6.7 points while hauling in 8.3 rebounds on average over 71 games in the regular season. The Celtics repeated as NBA champions with a 4-3 finals win over the St. Louis Hawks, with Conley roughly duplicating his regular season averages during the playoffs. Conley would play on one more championship Celtics team during the 1960-61 season, culminating in a 4-1 defeat of the Hawks. Conley skipped the following NBA season while pitching for the Red Sox, then joined the New York Knicks where he averaged 9.0 points and 6.7 rebounds in 70 games during the 1962-63 season, before his minutes dropped precipitously the following year which was his last in the NBA.
  23. Gene Conley was one of my favored players back-in-the-day! He recently passed away. What I best remember was he and Pumpsie Green going AWOL. They no longer make 'em like old Gene. http://calltothepen.com/2016/07/26/red-sox-history-gene-conley-pumpsie-green-disappear-from-bus/
  24. Hey Kimmi, I'm sorry about the link not working. Try it again: https://www.yahoo.com/news/m/61ffea6f-500f-32c5-b2db-404db588e150/ss_clint-frazier-debut%3A-yankees.html And if it still doesn't work, try Googling 'Clint Frazier debut: Yankees prospect has an incredible secret' It's worth the effort. Very inspiring 'feel-good' story.
