  1. Liriano still strikes out better than a batter per inning. That indicates to me that he still has good stuff. He could be a good gamble as a reclamation project. Better than Masterson, anyway, whom they purportedly gave an offer to. It all depends on what kind of deal Liriano signs for. I agree with most of what example1 wrote above. These numbers and years floating around are insane. Sox shouldn't hamstring their future on one guy. s***, they should have internalized that lesson with Agon and Crawford. Better to get some decent number 3's for the rotation - maybe a number two - and keep building the farm, where the real heart of the organization lies. Sox should be competitive even without a bonafide ace. You never know who'll step it up.
  2. For the visually impaired.
  3. Fred already is on a grassy knoll. BTW, mlbtraderumors is reporting Lester will get a 7 year deal. That's crazy. The guy turns 31 in a month. I really don't give a crap where he goes anymore just so long as it's not the Red Sox. Sox could probably get both Liriano and Shields for a total of 7 years combined and trade for another starter like Kennedy. You don't need lights out pitching, just good solid pitching, good hitting and good D to be competitive.
  4. THey also have the smallest seating capacity, which ramps up prices. They have good revenue from advertising and NESN, maybe soon to be The Globe. Forbes ranks them as the 3rd most valuable franchise behind NYY and LAD at 1 billion. http://www.forbes.com/pictures/mlm45mkmf/3-boston-red-sox/ The team has been consistently in the top 4 since Henry took over the team in team salary. If you want to find reasons to complain, you'll find it, but this team is not poor.
  5. Funny how Sox fans always cry poverty. This is coming from one of the biggest markets in MLB.
  6. A few thoughts: -In any given year, there is a future Yankee player on the Red Sox roster. -Odds are, whoever lands Lester, will be overpaying. -Most fans want him back, which will prompt the FO to make excuses. -It's reasonable to assume the Sox have made Lester a competitive offer. -There's a good chance Lester won't offer good value through the length of the contract. -Sometimes missing out can be a blessing. Remember Arod and Texeira. -Sox can fill their rotation needs in other ways. -While the Lester sweepstakes are ongoing, Sox should look at other FAs like Shields and Liriano. -Trading for a top tier guy like Cueto would be just as well. -It's only December. There are a lot of candidates to fill the Sox's 2 top spots in the rotation. Neither have to be named Lester. -Most people who are s***ing on the Sox if they miss out on Lester will still be watching come April.
  7. At the very bottom of baseballreference.com, they have a salary app with inflation adjustment. Just for kicks, this is what Babe Ruth would have earned in his highest salary year in 2014 (1933): $1,457,481 Contrast ARod: he would have made over 2 million in 1930 for his 2013 season. Babe Ruth made 80000 in 1933. So inflation can't account for this meteoric rise. Insanity can.
  8. When they had to ante up, the Sox offered 6/130+. That's a fair deal (actually, it's crazy - but that's for another thread). If he moves on, FO doesn't need to make excuses. Sox are trying to get starters. They know their rotation is not battle tested.
  9. According to baseballmusings, "Beyond the Boxscore publishes an article on aging by position. It provides another piece of evidence that players peak at seasonal at 27. There are still players and pundits that like to think players peak at 30, but it’s simply not true. Jon looks like a four WAR player to me next season, and given he is in the decline phase, so over six years I’d expect him to post 19 WAR (10% decline each year). Valuing one WAR at $7 million brings us to $133 million, right between the Red Sox and the Cubs. I would not be at all surprised if everyone else let the Cubs take him at $138 million."
  10. He hugged him, he didn't f%^& him. If that is a reason, then space lizards also have a part to play.
  11. Everyone needs a hug. Henry has a hug for SBF if he wants one. They're free. Precious little else is nowadays.
  12. The offer came before this great season. As you know, he wasn't that good the two seasons prior. Get off Henry's ass and stop spying in his bedroom. He chases his wife for exercise. And if you can't refrain from being a peeping tom at least film it. And you've been calling the FO stingy for years. Let's see... Overall payroll rank by year: 2014 - 4th 2013 - 4th 2012 - 3rd 2011 - 3rd 2010 - 2nd 2009 - 4th 2008 - 4th 2007 - 2nd 2006 - 2nd 2005 - 2nd 2004 - 2nd 2003 - 6th Henry buys the team in 2002. 2002 - 2nd 2001 - 2nd 2000 - 7th 1999 - 6th 1998 - 7th http://www.stevetheump.com/Payrolls.htm ------------------------------------ But people will believe whatever the hell they want to believe.
