  1. He is known as the Flyin' Hawaiin......FWI: Advantage Sox if this gets to extra 's....we're the worst extra inning team in the NL. (cause we have run out of players by then)
  2. This folks, is the bad Martinez.
  3. And so the pitcher switching/dbl switching Matheny frenzy begins.
  4. Kelly has had it. The Kid rarely goes past 5
  5. Pretty much. Both of them worked for the Cards for years. If it really bugs you, why don't you hop down to the local Walmart. They have a nice little transistor radio for 12 bucks. (that's what I'm listening to)
  6. I better keep a low profile. The Cards have not scored a run in the 1st inning in forever BTW...due?
  7. Actually, he's VERY good, or maybe I should say WAS. His last 2 or 3 starts they have been hitting the s*** out of him. He may be gassed. But even if he does OK, he will be out after 5, maybe six.
  8. I must have missed something last night. I know that he mishandled the ball on the dbl steal, but Kosma had a huge break, and looked to have the base made easy. I know the throw from the outfield got away from him, but it WAS a terrible throw. Furthermore, I would not be surprised if Salty was justifiably anxious at what was developing in front of his eyes on the bases. A red flag had to go up when Freese was replaced by the rabbit Kosma. Then kosma tipped his hand with a premature break for 3rd. I still don't know why he was not picked off there. At any rate, I would expect at that point the manager calls for a pitchout! How could he not know what was brewing? One thing is for sure: The coaching staff did not view the Pirate/Card series very close. In one of the games with the same 2 guys, Kosma on 2nd and Descalso on 1st they pulled off that same dbl steal!
  9. As to the field: It's pretty symmetrical in the OF, with the RF wall being further back than Fenway. There are no sharp angles to worry about. But there is a short, close wall down the right and left field lines, very close to the stands that can give an out fielder fits with a 45 degree carom back to the playing field. Nice for hitters shooting it down the line.
  10. Oh my yes. I mentioned Martinez as the most electrifying reliever in the other "Sizing up" thread. And I assure you that you have seen almost as much of him as I. I will tell you however, that in a stint late in Sept. he came in and every other pitch was in the dirt or over Molina's head! It was scary. So keep an eye out for that.
  11. Some things never change. Like hitting a good fastball. And all the scouting in the world won't help a hitter that can't catch up to one.
  12. Generally speaking, you are right. But there have been exceptions, two come immediately to mind: Walter Johnson. He never threw anything except that sidearm fastball. I know what you're thinking! "Compare this rookie to the Big Train??! The other (less talented) guy I'm thinking of was Paul Dean, Dizzy's kid brother. He had back to back 19 win years and his catcher NEVER put down more than one finger. All I'm saying is that it is possible to be a successful 2 pitch pitcher. Of course, he would be better if he does perfect that "show" curveball. It looks to me to have a pretty decent break on it.
  13. The Cards D was horrendous in game 1, but even w/o the errors they still lose the game by 2 or 3 runs. As to game 2, it was one bad throw that broke the tie in favor of the Cards. Their defense was improved, and they got a couple more hits than the Sox. Pretty even looking teams so far in my book.
  14. The Sox worked 4 walks off the Kid and several long counts, driving his pitch count to the moon by the 6th. There seemed to be an inordinate number of pop-ups last night to keep him out of deep trouble. Of course, Ortiz got him figured out pretty good. I guess the jury is still out on Wacha vs. the Red Sox.
  15. Why so sensitive? I said some fans called him that years ago. I'm guessing by your response that some Sox fans call him that too. How the hell was I supposed to know that?!
  16. Dumptster, as some Card fans refer to Ryan, when with the Cubs, would occasionally SHUT DOWN the Cardinals cold! It was mystifying. He would have given up earned runs in bunches vs. the Reds or Phillies and come in to St. Louis...ulg! He was then referred to as Cy Dumpster. That was a several years ago, but I still don't ever want to see that dude again.
  17. I don't remember that start.... Concearning the next 3 games: I'm not familiar with your guys, but I don't have a lot of faith in Lyne or Kelly to have "shut down" types of games. 2 of 3 is, however quite doable (for either team really) but a sweep for either is out of the question. You can look this up though: Lance Lyne, for whatever reason is TWICE the pitcher at home. He won 15, and I think only 4 or 5 in away games. You won't see him out there in game 7. It should be 15 game winner, rookie Shelby Miller. (15-8) Also, we may have seen the last of David Freese starting at 3B. I look for Carpenter to be moved there (his natural position) with Descalso taking 2B and Kosma SS for the duration. That bad throw last night combined with his weak hitting sealed his fate.
