We got a bag of used golf balls and cash not to exceed two dollars. Seriously, we got a "player to be named later" or cash. Despite the fact that Marrero is better than Holt defensively, he cannot hit the baseball at all. It was the right choice to choose Holt over Devin.

Devin Marrero just traded to Arizona for a bag of golf balls and a 50 cent gift certificate to Popeye's chicken.....I mean, a player to be named later or cash.

Hit on the hip, but he walked off the field with barely a limp. But the dreaded "further evaluation" was announced as well.

He was impressive today, wasn't he. I think he is a very good choice for a depth pitcher. With Wright out for 15 games he is going to have his chance it seems. Perhaps he will win Wright's job.....I was never much of a fan of Wright anyway. As far as Jacko's post above, I disagree that ST means nothing. It means nothing in the standings, to be sure, but guys who have excelled in ST have won jobs there.

I would agree with you: the Yankees have not been a great team over the last several years, and now they have reloaded and should be the favorites to win at least the ALE. That said I think that if our SP performs up to their capabilities we should be right in the chase until the very end.

This is what is called *potential*. Baseball history is littered with teams with great potential and teams with little potential that overperformed. Like most teams, the Yankees are an injury or two to a key player away from another second place finish (or worse). I am confident that the Sox team, as currently constructed, will be competitive all year as long as they stay relatively healthy.

I guess some of it depends on whether or not we are playing well enough to win a WS. If thats the case then sure, go for it this year. But if it looks like we aren't making the playoffs-or if we are just a marginal playoff team-or if we have so many injuries that contending for a ring is a long shot-then I do not allow Hanley Ramirez to become an albatross for this team next year.

Winning IS the priority-winning this year AND next year. While Hanley may have a decent year this year-players playing for a contract often have better than usual years-no way in hell I want him and his bloated salary on my team next year. Spend the money on someone more likely to help the team in 2019 and beyond.

IMO under no circumstances should Hanley's option vest. Even if he has a good season-or a great season-no sane GM in baseball is going to take his contract off us thinking that he can repeat his production next year at his age. If I am DD I make certain that he is not with the team next year. That money can be put to much better use.

Swihart has never been given a serious chance getting reps at catcher, and his numbers are skewed because of having to coming back from a bad injury. Unfortunately, we all know what Leon can and cannot do.

I agree that its unlikely that we will get more pop at 1B this year, not from those two guys anyway. On the other hand, I am pretty sure that Swihart has far more potential to produce offensive numbers than Leon does. Since we won't be getting pop at 1B it is important that we make it up elsewhere, say, at the catcher position. There have been many catchers throughout baseball history who can hit the ball. If, as expected, Leon hits horribly I think its perfectly reasonable to consider dumping him midseason and giving his reps to Swihart.

I think I would hold my nose and take a flyer on Buchholz-minor league contract only. There are too many question marks healthwise for this rotation.

We already lack the starting pitching depth to get through the season, as things stand right now.

I doubt very much that most pitchers throw during the offseason at the velocity that they expect to have during the regular season. That would pretty much destroy their arms. So it takes time to work their way up to normal velocity and I would guess that even at the start of the season most guys do not yet have full pitch speed. I do not know this for a fact; its just a guess. I agree with you that spring training is probably more like a country club for most regular players who are going to be on the roster. Those on the edge who are trying to make the team...its more performance based for them.

And many a pitcher came to spring training down 3-4 mph and it turned out to be a matter of conditioning. In fact, I would guess that the vast majority of pitchers who come to ST are down below the velocity that they will achieve early in the season. The point is that ST is nearly meaningless. Its a time for players to work on things and you cannot judge much at all from the performance of the vast majority of players in ST.

I would agree with that assessment. I think the Yankees have more firepower in their lineup. If Thornburg can come back strong I would rate our bullpens about even. However, over the course of a 162 game season it is generally the starting pitching that rules the day, and IF our SPers can stay healthy I think the Sox have a decided edge over the Yankees in that department. Severino is good, but he is no Chris Sale; and assuming Price is healthy (yes, its a big assumption) he is easily better than Tanaka. Porcello is due for a much improved year; Pom had a great year last year and as a #3-4 SP he has to be one of the best. ERod, once healthy also has to be the best #5 in the league. We do need some depth, but only diehard Yankee fans would say that a healthy SP rotation for the Yankees would be better than a healthy SP rotation for the Red Sox.

I can buy that. I also think that Devers is going to be much improved at 3B defensively this year....of course, he really has only one direction to go, which is up. I read somewhere that Mike Lowell was in camp helping with his footwork and overall defense. That has to help a bit.

It would be more accurate to say that both players did what they were capable of doing. I am sure that Devers was "asked" to play better defense and that Marrero was "asked" to hit the baseball.

What am I missing here....he only offensive weakness is against LHPs? He is batting better v LHPs than RHPs. Or more accurately put, Marrero is batting less horrendously against LHPs than RHPs.

One of Nunez's biggest attributes IMO is speed, and I am wondering how much of that he has left given his knee issues. I haven't heard what his diagnosis is (not that we are entitled to it), but I did read a quote from DD that knee pain is something he will have to deal with. Doesn't sound promising.

He cannot hit the baseball. If it were the size of a beach ball he still could not hit it. His career stats are astoundingly awful: BA: .208, OPS: .568; OPS+: 49. I don't even think Pawtucket would want him. I don't care if his defense is the best in the league, which it is not, he defines the term "black hole", and for a team that struggles offensively-or at least did last year-he is as useless as an appendix.
