  1. I think you've watched too much Money Ball or that was a joke. I'd bet that leaked proposed three team trades FAR outweigh actual acted upon three team trades. How many three team trades can you name that involved a pitcher of the caliber of Felix who was under contract for multiple years?
  2. You've mentioned 7 relievers in the decade plus history of baseball. I'm talking about overwhelming percentages in TODAY'S baseball. Please read this and get back to me. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/relievers-are-not-worth-multi-year-deals/
  3. Sorry, but you can't argue that you wanted to retain Papelbon and then try to ignore his contract. In order to retain him, it would have required a contract of at least $50 million over four years. I'll ask you again, would you have paid $50 million for Papelbon over four years? To ignore this question multiple times would suggest to me that you simply want to complain about the Red Sox not signing a player to a bad contract that you also would not have signed him to.
  4. Why not? 1. He's a reliever on the wrong side of 30. 2. Three or more year contracts for relief pitchers have a historically terrible track record. 3. $12+ million could get you a lot more than a 1-2 WAR player even if considering traditional inflation rates and ignoring the new stronger luxury tax threshold rules. You still have yet to answer my question. Would you have paid Papelbon more than $50 million over four years in order to retain him?
  5. I also very much want to keep Middlebrooks. But he's probably the first player Seattle would ask for. You don't get one of the best starting pitchers of a generation who is without giving up your best young players.
  6. How dare you point out facts. Don't be a "punk"
  7. Not to be rude, but to think that a rebuilding franchise such as Seattle would have any interest in someone such as Ellsbury who is no longer cheap or under contract for more than a year and 2 months, is rather naive. For one of the best pitchers of our generation, Seattle will no doubt want at least two of our best young players who will be under contract for multiple years. If you disagree, please point out the last time a pitcher of a similar caliber, who was still under contract for multiple years was dealt to a rebuilding team for anything less than 2 of the other team's two best young players.
  8. You said you wanted the Red Sox to retain him, then stated that you wanted to ignore the financial aspect of the contract. The reality is that retaining Papelbon was entirely contingent on the financial aspect of his contract. Do you disagree?
  9. Perhaps I'm giving you too much credit though and you think the Red Sox could have magically retained Papelbon for less than 4 years/$50 million?
  10. According to WAR, he's been worth 0.6 WAR and $2.8 WAR value this year. Judging a closer by saves is even less valuable than judging a starter by wins. By contrast, Scott Podsednick has been worth 0.7 WAR and $2.9 WAR value this year and he's cost less than 1/16th as much as Papelbon. Not to mention, Papelbon is on the wrong side of 30 and investing in relievers of any age for more than two years has historically been a piss poor investment.
  11. Leaving the financial aspect out of a contract is like leaving the vodka out of a vodka on the rocks, it's half the equation. Papelbon's on pace to be worth than less than half of the salary he's making this year.
  12. Drugs have nothing on wishful thinking.
  13. I think there are much better reasons to say that we should sell than not liking one of dozens of plausible pitching match ups in a one game playoff.
  14. It looks like if anything the picture on the right is from a more extreme angle which would make his stance look more open than it already is. There's no doubt that his stance is more closed.
  15. 1. There are 8 teams within 2 games of an AL Wild Card spot. 2. A team's best pitcher is often used to get to a one game playoff spot. I don't disagree with the rest of your post, but there's a very good chance that we would not be facing Weaver if we were to get to a one game playoff.
  16. There's no way in hell Seattle would make that deal. If the Red Sox were to acquire Felix, the Mariners would ask for two of Middlebrooks, Bradley, Barnes or Bogaerts as a starting point.
  17. At least two quality starting pitchers and probably a reliever or two to step in for our current relievers who will inevitably burn out due to the current ineptitude of our rotation.
  18. I'm trying to get a feel for what most Red Sox fans think we should do at this trade deadline. On one hand, our offense should get a significant boost from last year's AL MVP runner up returning. On the other hand, no one who's started more than five games for us has an ERA under 4.41. It would take some significant upgrades to our starting pitching or some kind of miracle run to even get to the World Series.
