  1. Damn....one thing I worry about is how far Taz can go this time before he tires again as he did before the ASB. Usually a pitcher can recover with some rest but will grow weary even faster the second time that season. That Main St. FB was the kinda' pitch he was starting to throw before the ASB. Ueh and Taz are probably still the two guys we really don't have any relief for at the moment. They just gotta' be able to go.
  2. f***ing ********...come on Sox....Bunch a' Mary's that can't even catch the ball are beating your asses.
  3. The curse of the NESN. Don.... "Lackey is throwing 80% strikes tonight". Doink.....three ball count and a walk.
  4. Nor does that graphic do anything for me. That thing is gonna' give me nightmares!
  5. Ortiz seems a little frustrated. Don't think he liked that first AB at all.
  6. Hopefully the coalescing will start some time after that steaming turd of a 1st inning.
  7. "Do not ask for whom the bell tolls....the bell tolls for thee"
  8. Those stats on WMB are pretty alarming at this point. The guy gets sent down...knows there are issues or why would he be sent down....and apparently still can't make any headway, even working to resolve those issues. It is getting to the point where it would not surprise me to see the Sox ultimately decide that he needs an off season...a plan and some help. The carrot is of course that everybody acknowledges that the hardest thing to find in baseball now is a middle of the order bat. Not real sure that helping hitters restructure themselves and make it back is a real Red Sox hallmark within their coaching ranks. Loney moves to Tampa and turns into the hitter that he promised!!! Not a real recommendation for the coaching staffs that had him before the Rays, including the Sox. What help Iggy has gotten appears to have come from players, not coaches. if WMB gets to the off season struggling, which is likely at this point I suspect, maybe the Sox get him a consultant to work with him and help him climb back.
  9. Defensive has never IMO opinion been accurately understood in MLB. The stats are not well devised for defense. Just looking at errors for example, the O's are clearly the best defensive team in baseball. However 2-10 across the entire ML's is not separated by more than 12 errors over something like 108 games. That's it. So, a guy does not have to be a sieve to be a defensive liability and I think that is what is behind comments like the one about Young. How much range does the player have??? Does he not even get to balls and would he have more errors if he could get to more balls etc, etc? The stats are trying to catch up. I think Young is a defensive liability. But that is me.
  10. Not a very active period across baseball for all the hoopla. I think teams selling often asked too much and did not get realistic fast enough to force more deals and buyers just did not see enough out there to bite.....almost no activity at all for bats.
  11. So does Holt getting the call now suggest that we don't see XB till the call ups? WMB's LH/RH splits look hideous even at the AAA level. WMB's average is creeping up but not by much again mostly I would guess because the splits are so far apart. As it gets later and later in the season I think it more likely we see XB than WMB, maybe at 3rd instead of SS. That said I would prefer that XB stay at SS.
  12. I would not have wanted to see us with Norris even if we did not do Peavy. I guess I can see how he might be a better fit for the O's.
  13. Sounds like Norris is still going to be flying, just closer. Apparently going from Astros to Orioles.
  14. Interesting point of conjecture.....would BC have made this move all-be-it at a lower cost if there was no added year of control? Honestly, I am leaning toward No..he would not have pursued Peavy if that were the case. I could be convinced either way though.
  15. Yea I think part of BC's thinking here is that he does not trust even the late August/early September return for Buch and I don't blame BC if that is where he is at. He ends up giving Buch even more runway, out almost to the end of the regular season and hopes like hell that it is finally enough. I am sure we would want Buch back ASAP but if pushed off to late September, he could still get a start or two going into post season and that could be OK as long as the Sox can make it into the tourney with Buch missing what would be maybe 6 or 7 more starts or something like that.
  16. At the least, this deal helps the Sox through the latter part of this season. I still believe the Sox have lost patience with Buch. By that I mean that BC was not going to allow Buch and his health or his whatever to dictate how the Sox finished this regular season. As it is now if Buch comes back...great...if not the Sox have bought themselves some insurance that they will not be spread too thin in SP and become irrelevant. What did they spend for that insurance? A guy that did not fit into their plans. You know where guys that don't fit usually end up? They usually end up being throw ins on other deals. The Sox made their guy one of the center pieces of a deal and actually got something of practical value out of it. Maybe it is not a blockbuster and maybe it does not get them to the promised land this year but IMO this deal is a very smart piece of baseball business.
  17. Iggy is not chop liver but he was not going to be a fit here. Whenever you are looking at deal and considering it bold and safe at the same time...you have done something real right. If it all falls in place like it is being reported, that is one hell of a job by the Sox FO.
  18. We gotta' find out who the last piece from the Sox side is pretty soon I would guess. I can't believe there isn't at least one more player, possibly more than one more.
  19. The other end to this that is very impressive is that I have thought for the longest time that Iggy did not fit into the Sox long term plans. Instead of just sort of letting him drift away in some nebulous trade, they end up turning Iggy as a trade chip to really improve their prospects this year and hopefully next year as well. Sure there has to be another player in the deal but we would have known already if it was a player that would make us curl our eyebrows. Really have got to commend the Sox FO here. Played Iggy enough to be impressive allowing the Sox to use him to fill a need. Plus this one belongs to the FO entirely I suspect as opposed to the Dodger deal which was really a deal between the Sox and Dodger brass as much as anything. Well played Sox FO!!!
  20. I seem to remember Iggy being totally pissed off at the Sox earlier this year when he was sent down. "Revenge is a dish best served cold". Hope Iggy does not have an appetite. Still have to go back to considering whether Iggy would have fit in the Sox long term plans. Sure he is not going to end up optimally placed from a Sox perspective but I would take my chances on Iggy hurting me. Iggy being able to hurt us this year is far from a sure thing. Won't prevent me from crying real tears if Iggy is eventually standing there with a knife in his hand that has my blood dripping from it.
  21. Maybe Young plays 3rd and XB plays short or maybe XB goes to 3rd, Young is a bat but he is swiss cheese defensively. If Iggy is the only really major piece we give up to get Peavy that will IMO be a really smart move assuming Lee was just too costly. I can't believe we would give up a bunch for Young. We would just pass on Young before we would do that I think. If it does work out like it is sorta' looking, I would call that well played by the Sox even though I hate losing Iggy. Iggy has lots of work to do to be a steady ML bat. I think he will get there but when???? Sox IMO will run out of patience first anyway. NESN just reported that there is "no trade currently in the works involving JBJ." They could of course be wrong but that is what they just reported.
  22. Iggy may not fit in the Sox plans and Peavy would allow the Sox to eventually juggle the current rotation and probably push a guy to the pen leaving us maybe only looking for one more pen arm. So that might work. Love Iggy but have thought for the longest time that the Sox will eventually talk themselves out of Iggy anyway. Glad the Sox are apparently out on Lee. No matter how you cut it assuming the Phillies would have gotten a hell of a load for Lee, it would be mortgaging a better future against long odds this year....entirely contrary to the direction they have said they wanted to go and contrary to the direction that likely makes the most sense for the Sox.
  23. So here is one issue (and only one) with the trade prospects for Lee scenario. Lets assume we get into the post season. In a short series we will not out-pitch the Rays IMO, Lee or no Lee. Not the year to do this again IMO. I would rather have JBJ as part of a more serious effort downstream than lose the flexibility JBJ represents to the Sox for an aging starting pitcher that will not get us past the Rays in a short series anyway...again IMO. Similar but not the same problem with Detroit. We could out-pitch Detroit with Lee and Buch but likely could not control their hitting through a series once we pitched Lee and Buch. Not to say we just give up...far from it. However giving up and betting long odds that have an impact on your ability to succeed downstream are not the same thing.
  24. Nice win...very nice showing by Workman. Hopefully with the exceptions of an opposing ace pitcher here or there, these next couple weeks should go something like this.
  25. If JBJ has been pulled for a trade, I don't see it for a reliever anyway. Seems like it would be Lee or preparatory for the possibility of a Lee trade. They are down to the end here. So, even if the deal is not done, it would make sense to get JBJ out of a game if he is involved. After all, its the minor leagues.
