And the confrontation between pitcher and hitter IS NOT a massive mental game?????
You might think the rest is secondary until its your responsibility to make plays....all kinds of plays. It does not seem secondary when you have taken a ground ball off your nose then booted the ball halfway around the ballpark or threw to the wrong base or ace overthrown the cutoff man at the worst possible time. Those two throwing mistakes will really make you feel stupid It seems very real, very present and you feel like you are standing there with your pants around your ankles.
Now I have seen some guys playing MLB now that I do not even consider baseball players. They are simply hitters and the way MLB has screwed this game up, they actually have a shot at hanging around. They stumble around in the field and on the bases. They don't even seem interested in playing. They are only interested in hitting. This is a fairly new phenomenon. But I know who they are. Interested to see how long they hang around on an MLB roster even given how the game is played today.
Base running is no longer treated as important. I will give you that. It is still frustrating to see guys who appear not to know the golden rule of base running. You cannot outrun the thrown baseball. I don't care how fast you are or how fast you think you are. You can't outrun the thrown baseball. You can run on some guy with a rag arm throwing lollypops around the field, but that's it.
If they were still playing this game the way it was intended to be played "the rest" would not even seem secondary.
