  1. I will be absolutely shocked if the Sox trade for Paps. It won't happen unless the Phillies take on salary and do not expect much return...in other words, it won't happen
  2. I knew it. Matt Thornton to Sox for Brandon Jacobs. It is not great but not bad.
  3. Third base is easier to steal. Unlike the runner at first who has a first baseman holding him on, the runner at second has middle infielders having to sneak in behind him. The runner at second can actually take off before the pitch is thrown. Although the throw is shorter to third, the catcher has to throw around the batter with a right handed hitter in the box. That all said, stealing third isn't a good idea unless the runner is 100% sure he can make it...and it is foolish to try to steal with a left hander batting.
  4. I am guessing you took this personally or have been waiting for the chance to use extrapolate in a post. He is still struggling with 4.1 walks per 9, but I agree he should be given a chance.
  5. I think the Daniel Bard situation has us leery of this, but lots of developing pitchers like Adam Wainright and David Price started out with short stints as relievers.
  6. The Red Sox could improve their bullpen greatly by simply adding some quality depth rather than an expensive big name. Oliver Perez in Seattle has reinvented himself as a decent lefty reliever. Steve Cishek in Miami has been very effective recently. The Brewers' John Axford and Francisco Rodriguez are both available. Acquiring a Craig Breslow type or two and bringing up a Rubby De La Rosa youngster would be the logical way to improve the bullpen depth...and keeping the future intact. I have a feeling that the Sox are close to getting Matt Thornton but fear he is not the pitcher he used to be.
  7. Papelbon would be great to have for the remainder of the season, but it won't work that way. Unfortunately he is signed through 2015 to a horrible contract, is aging, and is showing signs of decline. I hope the new Red Sox regime stays away from this kind of acquisition.
  8. Scott Feldman and Ricky Nolasco have now been traded for pretty much crap. The market has apparently been set in the buyer's favor.
  9. No, I am not talking about significant prospects. The Orioles gave up Arrieta and Strop for Feldman. What were the Cubs thinking? Feldman is a good number 5 or maybe a passable number 4, but Arrieta and Strop are late twenty-somethings, totally non-prospects. Epstein and Hoyer are either trying to stick it to the Sox...or total idiots. If they are indeed idiots, the Sox need to jump on Garza.
  10. As I said, I have never been a Garza fan, but if he is available, the Sox need to be in the hunt. I don't want them to overpay, but they need to be sure the Yankees or Orioles don't get him at a ridiculously cheap price(see Feldman). And for those who question the need for pitching depth, I am guessing you are recent baseball fans. You never have enough pitching. The Sox have a question about the health of Buchholz and Doubront has a whip near 1.5. He barely makes it to the 6th inning.
  11. A top of the rotation starter will mean taking on an eventually bad contract (Lee) and/or giving up top prospects (Price). I am only interested in a starting pitcher if he comes without being owed lots of money and/or he isn't going to cost a top 15 prospect.
  12. I am not a Matt Garza fan, but after seeing the crappola the Cubs accepted for Feldman, it is possible they will take a moderate package for Garza.
  13. I am really beginning to wonder. I believe his BABIP indicates some luck, but then he is a damn lucky sob. He is 2 for 4 tonight. If he can approach this luck, he should be the Red Sox version of Ozzie Smith for years to come.
  14. Ah geez! Please don't trade for Papelbon unless he comes to Boston for a utility infielder and the Phillies throw in a bunch of cash. He is signed to a terrible, terrible contract and his k-rate is down by about 4 per 9.
  15. This would be my biggest fear. Why oh why would the Red Sox want to trade a young, promising young player for less than half a season of an often injured number three, at best, starting pitcher. This is very faulty thinking in my opinion.
  16. Actually, Esasky's career ended because of vertigo which developed from an ear infection. Tony Horton, a Red Sox prospect traded to the Guardians in 1967 for Gary Bell, had one of the most tragic bouts with anxiety. In this clip, he is seen making an out against an Eephus pitch thrown by Steve Hamilton. As he approaches the dugout, he gets on his hands and knees and crawls the rest of the way. Legend has it he was never the same afterward. I don't know about that, but I do know that he suffered from anxiety. About two months after this incident, he allegedly begged out of the line up and allegedly attempted suicide later that night. He never played again.
  17. It is either because he is now in the National League or the Sox have The Curse of Papelbon on closers. Melancon has an ERA of 0.96, a WHIP of 0.857, and a K-rate of 9.6.
  18. Thanks...I didn't recognize her.
  19. Bellhorn, who is that girl in your avatar? Whew!
  20. Minor league numbers translate into major league numbers. Nava's minor league slash line is very good at .317/.415/.498. There is no pumpkin here. Nava is a decent ball player, but being an outfielder, he will likely bring little in trade.
  21. Even if Middlebrooks tears it up at Pawtucket, he has created some doubts about his ability to hit major league pitching. I don't know if the Sox can get value for him. I fear that Theo and Hoyer might be willing to buy low on him. They stole Anthony Rizzo from the Padres after he had similar struggles.
  22. My Sports Center app is saying Middlebrooks has been demoted and David Ross put on 60-day disabled list. 1b/3b Brandon Snyder is up.
  23. Btw, if you are wondering about the "Charlie Card" or the "Charlie Ticket," it comes from this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VMSGrY-IlU
  24. Excellent advice. This link should help: http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/bos/ballpark/directions/index.jsp?content=subway
