Pretty much this. You do need a closer, and having an elite one is definately a plus but in most cases, it really isn't defensible to pay them 10 or more million per year when you can find adequate production for much cheaper while investing that money elsewhere. That said, Kimbrel is the one guy who I wouldn't paying 10-11 a year and that's because the guy isn't just elite, he's absurd.

Agreed. Kimbrel is by far the best there is right now but you could probably let him walk and then replace him with someone who can do the job at a solid level for a fraction of the cost. That said, Kimbrel is one guy who I might consider paying a decent amount of cash to acquire if the opportunity presented itself. He's one member in a very exclusive club.

iortiz said that pap is the best closer in baseball. I disagreed because that title belongs to Craig Kimbrel. And I seriously doubt that our closer issues were the reason we lost 93 games. You can blame the rotation for that.

And he might be one of the few examples of a guy being worth it. He is hands down the best relief pitcher in baseball right now and there isn't anyone in anybody's bullpen that I would take over Kimbrel.

Craig Kimbrel is, without contention, the nastiest f***ing reliever in baseball. He K'd 116 guys out of the bullpen last year.

The Rays hardly paid for Fernando Rodney. Or the Orioles with Jim Johnson. It's an overrated position that isn't worth a huge chunk of payroll. I'm not giving 10 million to a guy who only throws 70 innings a year.

There is no reason to pay 40-50 mil over 4 years to a reliever.
