Regarding Swihart, Theo said that they would have drafted him regardless of his position just purely based on his offensive talents. The fact that he's a catcher made him that much more valuable to them. Hopefully he pans out.
I was looking at some of our old drafts - it's amazing how hit-or-miss these drafts are.
You look at our 2005 draft and we loaded up with Lowrie, Ellsbury, Buchholz all making significant impacts on the team.
Then you look at the 2006 draft, and we had 4 picks in the first/supp rounds, and we get Jason Place (released), Daniel Bard, Kris Johnson (released), and Caleb Clay (8.44 ERA in Portland).
I am really excited about our draft this year. I think Henry Owens is going to be one of those guys who doesn't really pan out, and I anticipate Jackie Bradley being a bit logjammed in the OF. Having said that, hopefully Ranaudo and Barnes can be here in 3-4 years when Beckett and Lackey leave, and when Lester and Buch are both still in their late 20's/early 30's. That would be a really stout big 4 if they pan out as expected.
