Once again the Sox are overly zealous in the pursuit of catching depth. Yes, Varitek is on his last stretch, and V-Mart is momentarily injured, but no matter who is replacing them, the offensive drop off will be horrific. I think there's no more value in forcing a veteran reserve catcher to start than in giving a homegrown catching prospect a chance. And yes, I know we don't have many of those, but surely we could trade for some for a cheaper price than Iannetta.
This is not to take away from Iannetta, he's proven to be a very clutch, substantial hitter -- for a catcher. His OPS is still very impressive, but his number of plate appearances are not. Please, Theo, you're willing to give guys like Nava and Darnell a chance before trading the house for temporary OF replacements, please try to be as patient when it comes to the catcher position.
