    The Red Sox are freed up a lot money with Peavy and Lackey contract ending, and the latter has a league minimum option. With only commitment to Buccholz, they can spend $20M+av to keep Lester. The key area is the number of years. If Lester seeks 6-7, he isn't returning.

    It is reported Tanaka trip to the US is over, he got a physical before he left.

    Red Sox could offer Tanaka an opt out after 4 year, which he will be just 29. It gives him a last shot at 1 final big contract. The Red Sox get arguably his peak performance before age 30.

    4.3M for maybe 10-20 innings from Bailey, that's irresponsible spending again. Now they will pay Dempster and Bailey close to 20M combine for 2014 for maybe 1WAR at best.

    That would f***ing blows for Boston. They lose a guy who is expected as their #2 starter to give them 200IP at above average. Lose their 20-30HR bat, and LOSE the #1 pitching prospect, who comes in handy when Clay's head explode. A rotation of Lester and follow by those guys could quickly erode. How many of them can you count on as 200 inning while at above average?

    Yeah they lost their 1st rounder in addition to the pool money from it. The draft is trickier now with a penalty for spending overslot.
