  1. Red Sox outfield: they have Gomes now to platoon with Nava in LF. In CF they have Ellsbury, Kalish backing up. RF is the only unclear spot, unless they have Kalish or maybe a platoon with Ross. Or maybe they succeed in getting Hamilton, who would play RF. I don't see any other FAs in the picture. It's either Ross or Hamilton, or just Kalish. I suspect they are making (or will make) a hard push for Hamilton. You wonder whether Cherington has enough moxie to get him. Hasn't shown much yet, though Gomes may have had other offers the Red Sox had to top.
  2. My cable bill is about $100. The news story I read last Sunday says about $50 of that goes to TV sports--for all those MLB,NFL,NBA, Olympics, NCAA etc network sports contracts, and for sports channels like ESPN ($5--the highest of the non premium channels). You pay even if you don't watch sports. That's the key. There are a lot of people with cable, hence a boatload of money which ultimately gets passed onto the teams. That's what fuels the salaries--and why they keep going up. It's worth it for me, since I like the MLB,NFL and NBA TV channels. I don't watch ESPN, and wish I could deduct $5 off my cable bill for not watching it. But the system approved by the Congress doesn't allow it. You have to be a sports fan to get your money's worth on cable. Sorry for the OT digression.
  3. You're one of the lucky ones, living in Canada. The Canadians wouldn't be crazy enough to be making sports rich with TV cable bills.
  4. Now there's a good question.
  5. I can't wait for these mediocre millionaires to pay more taxes. To think half my friggin' cable TV bill is paying their salaries. Yeah, half our cable bill goes to TV sports. :thumbdown
  6. So the Globe now says they're paying this guy $10 million for 2 years? He was supposed to be seeking $3-4 mil per year. You figure 2/6 should have done it. What's the big deal with this guy? He is basically a DH for LHP only. Below average outfielder. A slight downgrade from Ross who wants more money. The Globe suggests they now might be considering him as a full-time outfielder. I can't believe that, since he can't hit RHP. If so, it's going to be a long season for gentle Ben and his cohorts. The warning signs are there.
  7. They're getting Gomes, who is supposed to be a clubhouse presence (he prefers champagne to beer)and hits LHP about as well as Ross--for half the money.
  8. The FO proved to be a failure last year, but it was overlooked in the media--thanks to Bobby Vs big mouth which quickly became the media's focus. This year, the focus will be on the FO, so the heat is on Ben. He's undoubtedly getting plenty of help. One thing they have to do is to resurrect Bard's career, which they damaged foolishly. I see today Ben is saying they are pursuing Hamilton. Hamilton will be a test of how serious they are to spend. They don't figure to be able to get him for under 5 yrs since Texas apparently has offered him 3 yrs. But some idiot owner is liable to offer 7 yrs or more, and go broke the last few years of the contract. It's foolish to sustain the back end of $20 mil+ per year contracts when these guys are 37+ and on the decline. Look at ARod. Pujols coming sooner or later. Fielder, too.
  9. Somebody needs to light a fire under this guy. He always looks like he's in a fog.
  10. The Yankees keep piling up on LHd hitting oldies, who no longer have much value anywhere else but Yankee Stadium. They have been successful doing that for 60 years--going back to Big Klu and Johnny Mize. But how many of these guys do you need? Right now, they seem to have their fill of aging LHd hitters. Berkman would be a better fit in NY, but you never know with his knees. Besides, the Yankees had him a couple of years ago, and let him go because he looked washed up. He got in shape and came back well with the Cardinals. But I doubt his knees can hold up.
  11. Nieves is probably a guy Farrell can control. The other guy, Peterson, strikes me as a less controllable type. That could be the simple answer as to why Nieves, er Farrell, is the pitching coach.
  12. I don't think the Red Sox are discounting his value. They're paying him $2.5 million this year. You can bet he will get plenty of opportunity to show he can play.
  13. Reading Abraham's interview with Cherington tonite in the Globe, I must say I don't have a clue what the Red Sox are going to--except hire a 2nd batting coach. There doesn't seem to be sense of urgency in this guy to get something done. It's a bit like last year when he said they didn't have to do much--and they would surely make the playoffs. He says it's still early. Tell it to that Toronto guy who is eating his lunch and making that hole deeper for the Red Sox to climb out of.
  14. Why would a team like the Red Sox be interested in a guy on his last legs? Is this a joke?
  15. While Toronto steals half the Marlins team, the Red Sox are interviewing for their 2nd batting coach. That doesn't bode too well for the fans in Boston. They are patient, but at some point they have to ask when this team is going to act on plugging some obvious holes and getting better? Maybe a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes.Maybe not. There is zero rumor talk in the media about the Red Sox. That could be a good sign, but they better get off their asses and do something pretty soon--before the prizes get scarfed up by other teams. I have my doubts about Mr Procrastinator Cherington.
  16. Hosmer was a bust last year. Gordon better. KC would want top prospects for these guys, and it isn't worth it. I wouldn't trade any of their top prospect pitchers. Pitching is their weakness.
  17. I think it's good Hamilton has flaws--otherwise he would still be in Texas. Most of these guys have flaws of some kind. Pujols might be declining. AdGon has lost some of his stroke--maybe his shoulder. Fielder has his dad's body, and his dad didn't last beyond age 34. They all will be overpaid within a few years. The trick is to get Hamilton for under 5 years. I have my doubts that will happen--too many greedy owners out there. The Red Sox have been quiet, and haven't tipped their hand. We'll see what Henry does. Cherington says they will be big spenders. There aren't a lot of big tickets out there after Hamilton and Greinke. I doubt Greinke more than Hamilton. One pitcher (Bard) with head problems is enough.
  18. I have a hunch Henry will make a splash and try to sign Hamilton. They need the big star to replace AdGon, and they are one team who can absorb the cost, plus risk the downside in a division that is slipping away from them.
  19. Yeah, I think I wrote the post before I heard that comment. I then wrote a post saying that could mean they're going after Hamilton. First Heyman writes an article about rumors of Hamilton and the Red Sox, and now further talk on the Rose/Millar show on mlb.com tonite. The feeling is the Sox need a superstar for that market and somebody to anchor the lineup--having traded AdGon reluctantly-- to unload Crawford and Beckett.
  20. My impression is they gave the keys to the Ferrari to Epstein, and look what happened. Also, Cherington is a first year GM and you wouldn't expect him to have the authority to spend big bucks on his own. Notice they re-hired James and a few other experienced scouts to assist in talent evaluations in the FO. The big money stakes have really changed things from the old days. Big ticket items need approval from ownership these days--everywhere.
  21. Stanton would cost them several top prospects, even if they could make a deal. Not sure they want to give up their best prospects right now. The talk on mlb.com tonite on the Rose/Millar show was Hamilton to Boston. The feeling is the Sox need a superstar for that market, to anchor the lineup, and they know it. They have the money to get him, and it could happen, though nobody's talking right now, for understandable reasons. Sean Casey seemed to think so, said Hamilton could go upstairs to the "sofa room" in the clubhouse where no media is allowed, if necessary.
  22. I don't think they do the deal Toronto made. They were considering something of less scope, as Ben mentioned. He did, however, say that he expected the Sox would be among the highest salary teams before the end of pre-season. To do that, they would have to sign some big tickets. And the biggest ticket out there is Hamilton. He would clearly have the biggest impact.
  23. Waiting for Ben to pull the string is like waiting for Doc Rivers to play Darko.
  24. Reyes has a bad contract which is backloaded. He's going to get $22 mil each of his last 3 years. He isn't a good choice for the Red Sox, since they won't use his stolen base abilities, which is part of his salary. Plus he's a prime DL guy. They are better off taking a good, patient look at Iggy, who they know is strong defensively. The player they could have used was Johnson. But I don't think they do the deal that Toronto made.
  25. I'd be surprised if they get to $50 million in pre-season spending. They won't come close to matching last season's payroll, which was too high for them. That's why they dumped salary. I have a hunch Henry is playing it tight to the vest on spending. It could be almost as tight as last year. He is well-positioned now to sell the team, and that could be his priority. Even if he doesn't sell, I think he will continue to be conservative on spending.
