  1. Unfortunately, common sense is not one of Baseball's strong suits. The conventional wisdom is you stroke the NY TV market--the biggest source of advertising dollars. That means a spending advantage for the Yankees, and $100 tickets for Fenway to keep up. The Red Sox payroll would be half what it is without the Yankees. And tickets would be half the price.
  2. Yeah--the Rivera offer was a surprise. Especially the money. Maybe they'll get serious about driving Lee's price up. You never know.Wish they would get serious about Lee. Wonder how they react to Beltre wanting to stay. Maybe takes the heat off Epstein to sign AdGon. You know giving up young players is like pulling teeth for him. I say Beltre for 5 years at $60-70 mil. Cheaper option than what AdGon will cost in contract and players. They get Beltre cheaper, and have a bargain at 1B in Youks. Plus they get a needed bat on the right side. Next: Werth or Crawford? Maybe depends on who they can get. Werth is DH material down the road. Crawford is Ellsbury's replacement if they want to go in that direction. Next: You know they will add a third catcher for insurance. Doubt it will be Martin. Not much insurance there. Next: the bullpen--a perennial problem. I say trade Pap, promote Bard and sign another setup guy. Pap has lost his out pitch. Wake was a very good relief pitcher many moons ago, and could be again-- maybe.
  3. If they do sign Beltre, and I think they should if they can, they should still get another RHd bat like Werth to replace VMart. Signing Beltre eliminates the need to trade the farm system (and more) for AdGon. My guess is Epstein might prefer Beltre, since he doesn't like to trade young talent. Beltre said in Santo Domingo he wants YEARS, so the Sox will have to go 5-6 years.
  4. The Globe just reported the last few minutes that Beltre was huddled with Ortiz and other Red Sox players at that Golf tournament in Santo Domingo, and said he wanted to re-sign with the Red Sox as his first choice. So maybe Epstein has the inside track.
  5. The Phillies have about 10 owners who don't like to lose money. That's why they don't have Lee and Halliday. They can be outbid for Werth. They just shelled out 25 mil per year for Howard, who is no Pujols. I doubt they will break the bank for Werth. Their GM has his hands tied.
  6. There's a chance Holliday was "steered" to the NL like Santana--away from the AL East. Stranger things have happened in Baseball.
  7. Has any Boras client taken a discount to go to a preferred team? Boras usually gets top dollar for his clients. In Werth's case, it will be Philly or Boston--who will pay the highest bid.
  8. Saltek to catch. Well, they can always get somebody else mid-season to patch up any holes which are likely to develop.
  9. Sounds like Boras is going to let everybody hang in the breeze until the last minute, to squeeze every last dollar out of the lucky team that gets Werth. After all, isn't every FA a lottery to Boras? What a loveable guy.
  10. I think it'll be Werth for 4-5 years. A RHd power bat has got to be a priority.
  11. They will have to bag him quick--before Lee decides to stay in Texas. If that happens, the Yankees will be all over guys like Crawford. Anything left-handed. It's a plus Crawford doesn't have Boras. Better chance to bag him quick. Like the Tigers bagged VMart.
  12. Kouzmanoff might be a good candidate for 3B. His numbers could improve close to Beltre's in Fenway. And he's a decent 3rd baseman. Don't be surprised if his name comes up. Epstein has liked him in the past.
  13. I agree. And they could get a couple of guys from the Park League to catch and play 3B. IT'S ABOUT PITCHING, THEO.
  14. Spending money like the Yankees? Hell, every time the Yankees don't win a championship, they are a failure. A complete failure. Wins/Dollar spent--one of the worse teams in baseball. The Red Sox, by the way, are not so far behind. Their wins/dollar sucks, too. Take that, Theo. There are probably a thousand fantasy players who could do a better job. Theo is smart, sure, but he's just a PR hack who got promoted by Lucchino. Now what about this guy Brian Sabean? Now you're talking.
  15. Jeter will sign with NY for 3/60 , or something like that. he's just upset about ARod's contract. But he has to understand that baseball contracts are crazy, including his old one. Just treat them as crazy and don't try to compare yours with someone else's. Take the money and run. And be grateful it isn't surtaxed--as it should be. Jeter/Red Sox should be treated strictly as a joke. Maybe a leverage device for Jeter supporters in the media. The Sox don't even need a SS. They do need a catcher and a 3rd baseman. Focus, man, focus.
  16. Aren't they moving the fences in in RF--with bigger bullpens? That would make a lhd lineup more palatable. And force the Yankees to offer $200 mil for 7 years to Lee. Which the Rangers might match. Not to digress. But the shorter RF porch in Fenway makes Crawford the better choice. Besides, the Sox don't like to give Boras contracts to 32yo players.Look at Vmart. Crawford is the right age. Can you imagine an OF of Crawford, Ellsbury and Kalish? My oh my. The three deers.
  17. There's a pro football player who had that surgery when he was young, and came back OK. I forget his name. It's one of the big name players.
  18. I figure one of Epstein's biggest headaches this year is to figure out where Cameron fits. Maybe as the RHd platoon DH with Papi. I don't expect Ellsbury to be back in LF this year. Bet Epstein wishes he had that one back. I read the Tigers are going with VMart primarily as DH and lineup protector for Cabrera. That's smart money for a DH the Red Sox wouldn't pay to anybody not named Papi. But you have to wonder what they would have done if they let Papi walk.
  19. Wake me up if Lowrie gets through spring training healthy. That will be the first step. Salty, too.
  20. They were right in the thick of it last year until Pedroia and Youks got hurt--even with a makeshift outfield and Beckett mailing it in. How did they do it? Well, Buchholz emerged as an all-star pitcher and Beltre had another one of his rare contract years. He and VMart were enough RHd power to replace Bay. Epstein has let VMart go. So he either signs Beltre or he finds another RHD power hitter. That means Werth, or maybe Upton. Or maybe they just go get AdGon. But that makes them a bit heavy on the LHd side. So it just might be Werth--unless he signs Beltre. The latter depends on whether Beltre wants to move to the West coast. They need another RHD power bat--whether it's Werth, Beltre or Upton. Crawford doesn't seem to fit--not unless they trade Ellsbury. My guess is Werth would like to hit in Fenway. Maybe some suction there.
  21. I think Epstein has a good record letting go of aging players who want to be paid on past performance. Damon is a good example. He did not fit in Boston, but fit in NY because of the short RF porch, which lessened the need for him to play CF (which he lasted for 220 games there). The track record for not signing 32yo players to long term contracts is pretty good. They should stick with it. Belichick/Kraft have the same philosophy--obviously. If Epstein doesn't sign Werth, you will know why. Same as VMart. Teixeira, by the way, did not have a $20+ million dollar year in NY. I still like Youkilis at $10 mil.
  22. If Lackey doesn't improve to #2 starter quality this year, Epstein should lose his salary bonus. They have obscene money invested in this guy for what he showed last year.
