  1. Is it more important for the Red Sox to get a win--or for Wake to get his 200th win? That's the crux of the matter for this team.
  2. In WEEIs interview with Theo, did anybody ask him some relevant questions? Like who the hell is Conor Jackson? And why Aceves hasn't been the 3rd starter? And how are they going to make Lackey disappear? And will Wake ever be put out to pasture? And why Miller didn't pass the bullpen test before starting so many stinkers? Why does a $180 million team have such lousy pitching, Theo?
  3. Wake has given up his usual 5 runs in 5 or 6 innings. The difference is they finally got 11 runs for him.
  4. They can't do it anymore. They've been babied so much they can't throw more than 100 pitches.
  5. What you're saying is there is another problem. Complacency? Attitude? Conditioning? I think the team needs new management on the field--with stronger leadership and urgency to win. Better preparation in spring training. I don't know about the FO--Theo definitely has a problem dealing the farm system--even for young established players like Pence. And then crowding the roster with dead horses and free agents. He has to come to terms with this obvious conflict.
  6. It really boils down to leadership. Laying the groundwork. Setting the tone. The management slips badly in this regard.
  7. Yeah. It illustrates that Epstein can doublespeak. He didn't do a hell of a lot about improving the pitching--actually made it worse. That didn't help the hitters. Epstein has done good things, and he's done bad things. Too bad he doesn't get enough credit for all the bad things he's done.
  8. The trouble with all these predictions is the Yankees have been overachieving in pitching all year, and there is no reason to think they will stop now. My guess is it will catch up to them in the playoffs. The cream will come to the top. The Red Sox only chance is if they have their top 3 starters, including Buchholz, ready to go. Bedard is a longshot as the only capable replacement for Buchholz. Maybe Aceves, too. One of the major Red Sox mistakes in the stretch has been the failure to use Aceves as the #3 starter, when he was clearly better than anybody else.
  9. Josh will only be allowed to throw 80 pitches his next start. In Pawtucket.
  10. Epstein babies the pitchers. They are always an extra week away from being ready. I wouldn't mind if it worked. When was the last time a starter went 7 innings? It's 100 pitches and out, regardless of the score. That's a bullpen killer. He knows damn well they don't have a prayer without Buchholz if they make the playoffs.
  11. I think the real problem with the Red Sox is Henry is the opposite of Hank Steinbrenner. Henry does not kick ass. Right down the line. He's a softy.
  12. Cafardo's article in the Globe today seemed to raise some questions about Francona's leadership--or lack of it. Funny how the media can turn against a manager when the team starts losing. Tito's style depends on the players creating their own motivation. That seems to fit with a team full of expensive stars, like the Red Sox. But maybe complacency has set in. There are times when some discipline may be needed, and that's not Tito. I still have my doubts about the overall conditioning of this team, and I think they really missed their old bench manager, Brad Mills, the last 2 years. He was probably the discipline.
  13. I see Wake and Lackey are pitching the next two at home against Toronto. You could say there is pressure on the hitters.
  14. Look at the whips. They keep throwing starters out there with 1.5 whips--they get hit. If any of their good starters go down, they are in trouble. That's what is happening. They have no pitching depth. The organization thinks they can wild card into the playoffs on hitting, and then get lucky. Pitching wins championships, not hitting. That's why the Yankees used to beat the Red Sox every time when Williams played on those good hitting teams--with Raschi, Reynolds and Lopat.
  15. Hey, a bad start. now limping into the stretch. That suggests a possible lack of conditioning. Which is another way of saying the management sucks.
  16. well, how about f***ing Aceves? that makes f***ing sense, doesn't it?
  17. I'll panic when Tito panics.
  18. Pedey has been looking like he could benefit from a day or 2 off--for 2 weeks. Tito is still sleeping in the clubhouse.
  19. look in the Sunday papers. AL: Red Sox 1st in hitting, 12-15th in pitching. Yankees, top 5 in pitching, top 5 in hitting. NL: Phillies: 1st in pitching, top half in hitting. Conclusion: It's about pitching. No team can score 10 runs every game.
  20. I hope Verlander gets the MVP. Or CC Sabathia. Those guys are indispensible. CC deserves it. He has been a true stopper the last couple of years. Sure he pitches in lopsided Yankee stadium, but he's still a horse. Verlander could win the CY and MVP if he wins 25 games. This could be the year a pitcher gets it. I wouldn't give it to any of the Red Sox--they are a disappointing team. Granderson has never been a factor--he doesn't hit for high enough average.
  21. wins-losses don't mean spit for a pitcher. starter or reliever. you look primarily at the WHIP. That tells you more about how effective a pitcher has been against the opposing hitters, and what kind of command he has. Clearly, the Red Sox have problems--too many guys with 1.5 whip and above. And they keep throwing these guys out there...and they keep gettin' hit. LOL
  22. The Red Sox look like a fat, contented wild card cow. Why else would they be throwing 1.5 whip pitchers out there every other day? At least they're trying Weiland tonite.
  23. You mean Carlos Gonzalez?
