  1. Gammons is no astrologist. He has his contacts, and the Red Sox evidently knew Lackey had elbow problems. They were probably trying to stretch him through the season.
  2. That's why it makes sense for the Sox to sign Oswalt for a year. Next year, they'll be in position to bid for better FA starters. Notice how the Yankees were so worried about the luxury tax they signed Kuroda for $10 mil. Agree about Boras. He's getting to be a liability for clients.
  3. Epstein wants a heckuva lot more for Garza than the Mariners got for Pineda. And I would rather have Pineda.
  4. I think they're pretty much backed into a corner now with the Yankees' sudden pitching deals. They are going to have to go over the cap a bit and sign Oswalt, or else they are going to take a big PR hit. Oswalt pitched well the last couple of months, and maybe his back problems are behind him--for a year, anyways. $8 mil is chump change compared to the consequences of doing nothing.
  5. Spot on, in my view. He let Epstein get away with murder the last couple years, especially signing CC against Henry's better judgement--as he let slip on WEEI. And I suspect he would love to get out from under the Yankees in the AL east.
  6. yeah, they are. When they don't win, they destroy furniture and anything else in sight. Henry regards teams as investment toys. Don't be surprised if he sells the Sox and buys the As, and builds them up again as a power.
  7. 61 at bats against a whole season as a starter? Please tell me you are not a Yankee troll.
  8. I think the Yankees stole Pineda. That also seems to be the view reported from some observers around the AL. The Mariners bought the Montero buildup. The kid is a small step ahead of Lavarnway--61 at bats last year, and the Yankees just stole one of the top young pitchers in baseball for him. He will win 15 games easily for NY next year. James had him projected for 11 wins and a 3.07 ERA pitching in Seattle. Montero is projected as a DH. Even if the kid hits, he isn't much of a position player, while Pineda could be an ace. We also hear the Yankees were willing to offer the farm for Felix. And the Red Sox were in it, too, as they should be. That shows how dumb the Mariners are as an organization. They could have gotten the 3 or 4 top Yankee prospects, including Montero and those two top pitching prospects, for Felix. Instead, they gave up a guy who is protected and could be better than Felix in 2 years--for just Montero. Maybe they'll take Varitek back for League.
  9. I don't think a lot of people would be surprised if he sold the team. He's a hedge fund guy. He buys low and sells high. And it's possible the TV sports are on a bubble.
  10. Well, they screwed themselves capwise by offering Ortiz arbitration. That restricted their pitching options if they were going to stay under the cap. They made their bed, and now they'll have to live in it. The Yankees operate on a different plane. The one team that makes a living being over the cap. That they haven't been successful lately in the playoffs just gives them incentive to spend more. In my view, they wasted $10 mil on Kuroda, who inflated his numbers in his contract year (wonder how those guys can do that--seems so common), and is too old. But they made a good deal for Pineda for a kid Montero, who may be a typical overhyped Yankee rookie. If the kid can't catch, he isn't worth a promising young starter. Seattle has traded two good young starters, Fister and Pineda, to AL teams. All the Red Sox were able to get from them was broken down Bedard. Seems Henry should expect his GMs to do better than that.
  11. Looks to me like Hank Steinbrenner is convinced the Yankees need another expensive starter, and isn't willing to wait until next year. He is now paying $12 mil a year to a setup guy, Soriano, and he will probably overpay for another starter. Against the better judgement of his GM, Cashman. Hank should listen to his GM, but the Steinbrenners are control freaks, and Hank seems to be winning obsessed like his father was. In NY, winning is a very serious business. It is the center of the TV/Internet sports media. The Red Sox should wait for next year when the FA starters are better, or trade for a pitcher.
  12. I would rather see them trade for a pitcher rather than sign anybody still available. Bailey may need some help closing from Melancon, based on his arm history. That would put Bard back into the bullpen. And if you have one of the top three starters going down, you need a good replacement. They have the pieces to make a trade for a quality starter. Apparently, they almost had Gio, so they are probably still looking for somebody with upside who is controllable. I don't think they want to give up Middlebrook for Garza. Maybe they can work something out for Wandy if Houston will pay half his salary. Wandy would be a better pitcher on a winning team. He's better than Bedard.
  13. I read that Steinbrenner is talking to Boras about Edwin Jackson. Seems I recall Steinbrenner doing the same a year ago about Soriano--going over Cashman's head. Looks like the same deal this year with Jackson, a 3rd or 4th starter who wants a Boras ransom, $16-18mm per year, he won't get even from Steinbrenner. I wonder how the media would react to Henry or LL going over Ben's head about signing a free agent? Well, we have just seen the reaction with the choice of Bobby V. as manager over Ben's "choice" Sveum. And that was papered over by the Red Sox as if Ben had been part of the process (maybe he was). The point is Steinbrenner goes over Cashman's head, and there is a hardly a media ripple. And Cash is hardly a rookie GM. Hank could care less about the media. He just wants to win.
  14. Padilla is just one more handful of mud to throw against the wall. I would guess it's another one of those minor league contracts which doesn't cost anything unless the mud sticks. Padilla has a way of reviving his career every so often by pitching well in short stretches.
  15. I would be happy if they passed on 37yo Kuroda and Oswalt. They are both holding out for more than $10 mil. I read somewhere the Sox have about $5-6 mil to spend. I think Bard will make a respectable 4th starter, and Aceves is pretty much fixed as #5. The problems will start if one of the top 3 gets hurt, or if the bullpen springs a leak.
  16. Harden is still out there. But they are only giving out minor league contracts to pick their 4 and 5 starters. Sounds a bit silly for such an expensive team. Henry needs to lighten up and give Benny some spending money. Maybe's he waiting for another good trade.
