  1. Scutaro was basically a one year rental. At his age, he was not coming back. They figured they had a one year replacement for him on the roster--with Punto and Aviles around.
  2. Now let's see. Who's on first? Cabrera's on first. No, Fielder's on first. Or maybe Fielder is DH. For $24 mil? No VMart is DH. But VMart is out for the season. So Fielder is DH. And Papi looks cheap. And Dombrowski is nuts. Or maybe playing third.
  3. I don't see how he can be very effective this year. Pitchers need at least half a season to regain sharpness with these types of injuries.
  4. Ross had a good WS with the Giants a couple of years ago, and has a reputation for stepping up as a competitor. He's the kind of role player the Red Sox are looking for. It goes beyond the stats.
  5. His K/W numbers have been going south the past few years, so you have to consider that. But I think he could be effective in the AL east, with that funky stadium in NY. You play the Yankees, you need lefthanders. I'm sure he's in their radar. I doubt Oswalt is a sure thing, especially if they eat most of Wandy's horrendous contract. I like him better than Boras-Jackson.
  6. I don't know. If his elbow was his problem, he could come back to his Angels' level, which would make him pretty good at a good price. Plus they get a break on the cap. I would give him the benefit of the doubt, considering his elbow problem. The mistake was in allowing him to pitch with it. Red Sox medical judgements haven't been perfect lately, in case you haven't noticed.
  7. There are other options besides Oswalt. Floyd, I've read, comes at a lower effective salary this year --around $4mil--and is tied up for a couple more years, though at higher salary. That might allow room for another outfielder. The caveat is they probably have to give up a prospect or two for Floyd. Wandy R. is also available, but his salary is >$10 mil the next couple years. Houston would have to pick up a lot of it in any deal.
  8. Pedey came up as a SS. He became a better 2nd baseman than anyone ever thought he would. I don't know if they would want to move him back at this stage in his career. I think you'll see Aviles/Punto/Iglesias splitting time during the year. Maybe Iglesias the 2nd half.
  9. the big IF is his back.
  10. I guess the idea is to get him and extend him before the Yankees get to him.
  11. Don't know if Philly wants to break up their big 3. Seems they would not having signed Pap to big money for 4 years. But they do have Worley, who looked very good last year as the no.4 starter. You never know about these things. Hamels would be very big.
  12. Nonsense. Scutaro was a one year rental. If they sign Oswalt, he could be a top starter if his back is OK.
  13. Punto figures in here as a platoon with Aviles if they keep Iglesias in AAA.
  14. Well, Benny has some balls after all. Now go get Oswalt. And give Aviles and the kid Iglesias some PT. Trading Lowrie earlier, you figure their thinking is changing on the fly.
  15. He has a .261 BA in two years in the minor leagues. He has less than a season in AAA, and his numbers aren't far from Reddick's. They need him for his defense--not his offense. SS is basically a defensive position. Can he benefit from more AAA experience? Maybe, but he can also help the Red Sox right now--regardless of his hitting.
  16. Sure, Aviles can play SS. But wait a minute. What happens if Youks can't play 3B? Is Aviles needed there? Or is he needed in RF? And Iglesias can't hit? Aw, let's call the whole thing off and keep Scutaro another year. He's bound to hit .270 and play mediocre defense. Good enough for $6mil. We'll worry about this next year.
  17. Why the hell does a SS have to hit--on a hitting team? The kid is all-world defensively, and he has speed. How many good hitting/good fielding SSs are there? Henry couldn't afford one anyways.
  18. Looks to me as if there is a difference of opinion in the FO about trading a year of Scutaro for a year of Oswalt or Floyd. Considering their needs, it looks like the pitching is the preference. Scutaro is only a year's rental now anyways, and they have Aviles, Punto and Iglesias. I keep hearing about how Iglesias is not ready as a hitter--having hit .261 with an .6xx OPs for two seasons. That kid is your typical defensive SS--you don't pay him to hit on a hitter-heavy team. That should be obvious. You hide him in the lineup and feast on his defense. The disparity between the reckless spenders of last year and the penny pinchers of this year is striking.
  19. Last word is they are still thinking about it. They got Aviles and Iglesias, and can turn Scutaro into Oswalt or an outfielder. What's there to think about? Never write off the season. They have too much talent, and it all depends on injuries anyways.
  20. Funny thing, the more money these guys make and have to spend, the worse off the team is. That goes for the players and the FO.
  21. And at this point, I'd rather have Oswalt for a year than Scutaro.
  22. For a minute there, I thought they were getting creative. Just for a minute.
