  1. Gotta agree with Diony here, Bard's upside seems to be as a Juan Cruz type -- ungodly stuff, but a lot of walks -- I mean a LOT of WALKS -- mixed in for good measure. He might be almost as good as David Aardsma unless he takes another step forward
  2. Better command I can believe -- by default if nothing else. Bard's command is ridiculously bad. Not sold on the better arsenal. That question is pretty role-specific, and Bard's arsenal is pretty much tailor-made for relief pitching.
  3. That's why Khoury is perfect for the role. He has options so he's easy to get rid of when Lugo gets back, he's flexible, patient at the plate, and there's nothing to ruin -- he pretty much is what he is.
  4. This might be different because they have some viable options (as long as you keep your expectations reasonable anyway) currently in Pawtucket. Won't be that hard to find a veteran infielder for a couple weeks if they do go that way however. Esteban German types are a dime a dozen. Maybe you just sign German and use Pedroia at short for a couple games. Anyway, point is it can be done.
  5. .301 .349 .489 .838 Pena's slash stats in '06 at a time when we needed every hitter we could get -- and Pena resultingly actually got consistent at bats, someting he's never gotten since, I know you guys want to crucify him because of the numbers he put up in '07 but he really wasn't that bad taken as a whole.
  6. Agreed, and I'll be dumbfounded if we see Tazawa before next July. But you never know. Bard is 2 injuries away from an absolute necessity.
  7. But you're not Pujols. And maybe Pujols really believes that no matter how you get the numbers, the numbers should stand on their own. I wouldn't say that had anything to do with Pujols and steroids. I'm more inclined to believe the rumors that Pujols is really 34
  8. I seriously don't get the Wily Mo hate. What's up with that? Seriously, I don't see what WMP ever did to us that was that terrible. He hit well in '06. and while he didn't in '07 he fetched back Carter, a nice minor league hitter with far better fundamentals than Pena had that we could stash in the minors until we needed him. All told, there have been far worse acquisitions for the Sox than WMP. Also, keeping Arroyo doesn't save us in 2006 and keeping him beyond 06 probably costs us Wakefield so that's a wash.
  9. Right, he was barely a roleplayer so I don't count Youkilis. And Manny isn't "left." He's gone.

  11. I think the shoving match between Manny and Youkilis didn't help. There seems to be a conflict that's inevitable sometimes between the last few survivors of the 2004 core and the young up-and-comers. Some of what I could best describe as listnessness from Big Papi might explain as well. Wow. I just looked it up. It really is down to Tek and Papi left from the 2004 group. Kinda sad when you stop and think about it. kinda suggests that one reason to sign Tek was to find a way not to isolate Ortiz...
  12. Nah, I just spend the time to reseach the other team so I know how good they are too. Anywho, I think there are other baseball teams that would give Pedro a better chance to play in the majors next year. I would think the Blue Jays would be extremely interested for example, if nothing else they could use a veteran stopgap until MacGowan comes back. And if I was his agent I'd be talking to teams in both Central divisions, especially the White Sox, Cubs and Brewers, to try to sell my man.
  13. Which vests if he makes 26 starts IIRC. In other words it's a borderline contract year and circumstances beyond his control could render him a free agent. We've at least got hopes that he might put on a contract year showing hoping for an extension.
  14. Yes, and that makes it tempting, especially if you could slip him through wavers. The drawback of the initial WMP acquisition is that you couldn't. If you can get him into Pawtucket for depth then by all means go for it.
  15. Guys, we got one good year and one bad year out of Wily Mo. Just remember that before you go overboard on the OP for the suggestion, mmk? Serious answer here, Rocco fills that role now, and probably better than WMP would.
  16. It's Papelbon. Are you really that surprised? I've thought for awhile that in a lot of ways Papelbon did indeed resemble a young Curt Schilling given the selection of stuff and the initial career track. (remember, Schill started his career in the 'pen too, before the Phillies stretched him out). Now we see an attitude comp as well. Ahh well, he can taolk all he wants to. Just back it up on the field.
  17. I can't, but then I do that whenever anyone is pitching.
  18. You know, after the Gonzalez blooper where he said "if we play this inning out 100 times, we win the next 99 times."
  19. 65 wins is 97 losses and aklmost guaranteed 5th place in any division people, it's not like I'm ticketing them for the Series Sheesh. Personally I think this squad is better on paper than the 2007 Kansas City Royals. But that's me.
  20. Poor use of logic there. Very poor use of the laws of probability. So because 1 in for are usually successful, and one seems successful now, the other 3 are gonna flop? There is no room to judge Penny and Bard yet, and even less to judge Smoltz. Just because you've got a 25% chance on a sample size of 4 doesn't mean you can't have 2 hits, or they could all miss too
  21. Indeed and factoring in that one team went to game 7 of the ALCS and was a couple bounces from going ot the Series and the other went to the golf course and was a couple bounces over par.
