  1. What exactly should Farrell have done to turn those 9 games into wins? Specifics please. Otherwise you're just blowing hot air. Acting as if Farrell had a magic wand of make-the-team-play-better and we lost HFA because he adamantly, steadfastly, and for no good reason, absolutely refused to wave it, gets us nowhere.
  2. I disagree with such an absolute statement. Our starting pitching played way below its talent level in the playoffs. To assess them as if the 1 start each they made against Cleveland are the only numbers that matter is ridiculous.
  3. No it's not an excuse. But the fact of the matter is it's still VERY possible for some of our stinkers to turn it around. Especially Shaw, Price and Pomeranz, all of which have displayed the talent to rise above their current struggles. Pablo I'm a little more skeptical, but I'll admit it's more because of the lying he did in the previous offseason than because of an honest assessment of his true athletic ability.
  4. What she said was, basically, if you knew that a guy was always gonna give you 22 wins, 223 IP and an ERA in the low 3's, 41M isn't too much to pay for that player. That's the value in contracts for a win contribution of that magnitude. You have to admit, Porcello's year was pretty special. Now it's ridiculous to expect Porcello to replicate this season next year, that's why he's not paid $41M/year, but it's an example of how big contracts CAN pay off. We are paying a lot for Porcello but it's hard to argue with the fact that a 22 win season returned us far greater value than we're paying. That's what that valuation means.
  5. So like I said. Definitely good. But nothing the world has never seen before.
  6. Would not have minded keeping Iggy, I was disappointed when he was traded, but Iglesias' defense is more flashy than brilliant if I'm honest. He has those eye popping plays, but in the final analysis he isn't all that at SS -- definitely good defensively but nowhere near as fantastic as he looks when he's having one of his moments. He'd be an asset for his team on defense, and hit more than well enough to make an All-Star of himself, but at the end of the day the eye test overrates Iglesias slightly IMHO. I will readily concede that Iggy at SS and Bogey at third is probably better on paper than any combination of third-and-short we've had since Garciaparra and Mueller in 2003, if the two young players develop properly.
  7. I think it's gonna take as long as it takes, I know they're not gonna rush Smith back to the bullpen before they're sure he's ready.
  8. ... because the team brought in Luis Aparicio, a very good glove first SS.
  9. Sry wrong thread, I meant to post that in another thread but I was multi-tabbing. Yes Petrocelli played SS for the Red Sox. He was actually a very good bat-first SS. He moved over to make room for a glove guy, Luis Aparicio.
  10. Standard practice with TJ
  11. Cool. I learned something today.
  12. Well I went through the obvious recent guys (Nomar, Valentin), not them, then I checked a couple of the more famous offensive shortstops I remembered from Sox history (Cronin, Petrocelli) and it's not them. I'm obviously forgetting someone.
  13. We've already got one of those. Before spending money and tying up space on the 25 man roster to bring in another one, we really should see what Shaw could give us next year.
  14. Love to go after Kenley Jansen. I have a serious mancrush on the guy, he's an amazing reliever and was the catcher for the Netherlands team that humiliated the DR in the WBC a decade ago.
  15. Yeah, I had the Dodgers totally underestimated, mea culpa
  16. That's a point worth pondering. One of the largest factors in a lot of recent playoff runs is a very deep bullpen. The Royals last year I don't think allowed a single run after the 7th inning in the WS, it was instrumental to their 3 comeback wins in the series. It would have played in their favor in 14 as well if the Giants didn't have Bumgarner being Bumgarner on short rest in game 7. REally important to have those extra 2-3 arms you can count on to hang a donut on the board when you need it. That's the difference between an adequate bullpen and a great one. and a great bullpen can make a HUGE difference.
  17. Given his performance last year I'm actually really interested in seeing what Steven Wright does in a full season next year. He was very effective over 150 innings. Borderline acelike for much of that. I want to see if he can build on that, because I think Wright is actually still a little underrated by some people.
  18. I think the Guardians just handed the Cubs their first World Series in more than a century. They should be able to steal 1 of the next 4 games but no way the bullpen can keep this up for a full series.
  19. I for one am glad the Boston diaspora is so well represented in these playoffs. And yeah, Tito vs Theo in the World Series would be something to see. Too bad I'm working nights and will never actually be able to watch the games.
  20. I think the most likely way we're going to land an ace in this offseason is to do a buy-low on a guy like Dallas Keuchel or Sonny Gray and count on a bounceback year. And frankly not only are the teams who hold those contracts likely to want to hold onto them and see if their value recovers and they can sell at a higher probe, but we already have some decent candidates for a bounceback or improvement already on the roster.
  21. I don't mind dreaming, but people generally on the forum seem to be getting the impression that grabbing Quintana is possible or even practical. If this forum is going to be trying to live the Quintana dream all hot stove season, I will honestly and literally go insane. This isn't the first time this has happened with a pitcher who is completely unavailable and the creatively stunted among us keep pencilling them into our rotation next year anyway (Jake Peavey back in the mid oughts, I remember a Cliff Lee lustfest era, you get the idea) and it gets a bit tiresome after awhile. You'd be doing me a favor, Moonslav, if, at the very least, you perpetuate more than one "dream."
  22. I don't like our chances of winning both homegames against a team as white hot as these Guardians.
  23. Sure, but until you prove that Farrell had no interest in HFA, your rant is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is that Farrell only actually tanked one game, right after we clinched the division, and that's pretty arguable since there's some rumor that we started Owens because the scheduled starter was dinged up. We didn't hand HFA away, we LOST it, there's a difference. The Guardians beat us to home field fair and square. They are a good baseball team and they got hot when we got cold, and took HFA in the last week of the season end of story.
  24. I'd rather have players that don't care one way or the other.
  25. I didn't. Cueto's playoff numbers aren't as bad as Price's but they're still bad. Would't have minded bagging Cueto, but I can def understand the desire for Price. He's pitched in this division for one thing, and he's always been a very very durable starter, this year not being an exception to that.
