  1. I said the MARKET, not the ECONOMY, genius. None of the big market teams were looking for a LF meaning Dunn had to scramble around among the small markets for an offer. TOtally different with Bay. If the Yankees had been signing left fielders when Dunn came along they would have paid him a lot more than 2/10.
  2. Dunn was a victim of the market. To expect anyone else to be matching Dunn's market-depressed contract is silly.
  3. Ryan Raburn, OF In light of Ankiel's slump/regression, can I please have Zobrist in RF and Ankiel on the bench?
  4. Which probably means it won't be their offer. I have no reason to doubt that Theo has every intention to take care of Bay before the offseason. Right now they have the guy as a captive audience. If he's receptive at all, and his counteroffer is less than $18M/year or so, then they have something to talk about and will probably get it done. The thing is, we don't have that guy who can come up behind Bay and take over in left field, not even in a "let the rookie work it out in the big leagues" sense. If Carter was hitting he'd be that guy maybe, but he isn't hitting. No one else has a prayer of replacing Bay's power. So while Theo'll set a value on the guy, it'll probably be a reasonable value that will get it done with Bay's agent unless Bay really wants to test free agency (which doesn't seem to be the case)
  5. 33 isn't that old. His injury is the issue, not his age.
  6. No way then! Let's not block Josh Reddick! It'll dilute the value of Baldelli's signing! Drew might need to move to LF as he ages!!! ... ... This is an absolute no-brainer and I'd consider $20M/year a fair and reasonable price for what Bay provides.
  7. Hence why all of us were surprised at Gammons quoting 15M/year in these negotiations.
  8. We'll be going head to head with the Yankees for Mauer even assuming the Twins don't bust the bank to keep the guy in Minnesota. I wouldn't assume we can get him until the moment we actually do.
  9. What that means in layman's terms is that they're using Lowrie's extended rehab to find out if theycan dump Lugo on someone. Personally, I don't think so. There really isn't that close to contention midmarket team that needs an SS out there. The closest you'd get is possibly a team like Seattle that's a little delusional.
  10. http://news.soxprospects.com/2009/06/mark-wagner-promoted-to-pawtucket.html Was just a matter of time. Countermove is Otness to Portland. Sets Wagner up as a candidate to take over for Tek when his contract expires after the 2010 season. If he hits in Pawtucket I could see him getting the call (at Brown's expense ion the 40-man) in September as the Sox try to sort out the puzzle of how best to replace Tek.
  11. I have to admit, I love what Kelly could be as a SS but at this point, the man is a starting pitcher. He's light-years better than I thought he'd be on the mound and there's no way he changes people's minds about him as a SS unless he just gets ridiculous there and hits 15 Hr's between now and the end of the season. Nedless to say, I don't see that happening.. As things stand right now he's on pace to be a candidate for a big league call up by September of 2010 as a pitcher, it might be 2 more seasons before he tastes the majors as an SS if he even sticks there and can hit. Just leave the guy on the mound. If you're worried about his innings limit, send him to the pen until the end of the year.
  12. He's a major leaguer, not a prospect. He doesn't have a lot of big league experience but This is a rehab start, not a trip to the minors where the kid has to prove he's developed. I don't believe Lowrie even burns an option on this, so expecting him to perform as if he was a minor league prospect and had to fight hard to "earn" a roster spot doesn't make a ton of sense. And make no mistake. Jed Lowrie is our starting shortstop. What we've gotten from Green is very nice, but once we get Lowrie back, Green will either hit the bench or go to Pawtucket if the Sox don't want to eat Lugo's deal. you just can't count on the guy not to regress in a crucial situation.
  13. Look at what Bay did for Pittsburgh, the ultimate low-pressure situation. I don't think we're in any great danger of the guy falling off. If anything, he's played better in the high pressure situations.
  14. It's vitally important to keep this guy in Boston. Get'r'done. 5 of 6 years at $18M/year would not be overpaying and he's the type of player who is still likely to be productive at the end of such a contract unless his health seriously deteriorates.
  15. If Huff is available, the Yankees will compete for him since he can play 3B and A-Rod is struggling.
  16. Really driving it on Paps.
  17. I'm not complaining. But the ball was up a long time and Drew has some speed.
  18. nice lil slider there.
  19. He's good for a pretty consistent .260/.340/.480 baseline and would basically replace Lowell's numbers in the lineup. We take a hit defensively, but we're still better off than we are with Kotsay, and who maybe even than we are with an injury-plagued Lowell.
  20. Glove the caliber of Johnson? News for you, Mr. Stuck-In-2005, Johnson is a below average fielder since he came back from major leg surgery last year. LaRoche is slightly below average, but that's about the same level Johnson has been at since he came back. He's still got a great on base approach, when he's on the field anyway, but I don't see a big difference between what's left of Johnson and LaRoche. As for laRoche's SUCK, you might tell that to his OPS+, which has literally never been below 100. *coughunlikeJohnsoncough*
