  1. Rizzo is the exception that proves the rule and the only one of these that even hurts.
  2. If Koji is still jobliess in January or February and looking for a cheap deal, NWIH DD passes that up in my opinion.
  3. Distinctly possible. He's in excellent shape now. If he's still in excellent shape on the far side of Christmas, good things should happen.
  4. I don't disagree with this opinion, but he's got the talent. If he's also still got the itch, and we could use him, I don't see a good reason why not.
  5. "See here's how it is, Mr. Ortiz. We don't have a DH. We have millions of dollars. You are a DH. We have every chance to win a world series with or without you. You have a choice. Play or watch?"
  6. Keep thinking big guy, keep thinking. We have a chance at the top this year, and Papi knows that as well as anyone. That retirement is gonna start looking mighty boring mighty fast.
  7. At some point, it's time to abandon your pretensions and get the freaking job done. DD isn't going to stop until we've won the World Series. He'll deal with the rebuild when and if it's time to rebuild. For now he's busy trying to win. We're too close to the top right now for it to make any sense to hold back or do half measures. All in means all in. And in fairness to DD, Theo and company did much the same in 2004, sacrificing quite a lot of prospects to bring the title to Boston, and yet still could turn around 3 years later and introduce a team that was significantly homegrown (Ells, Pedey, Youk, Lester, Buchholz, etc). And when it comes to that, we already have a ton of young homegrown talent on the roster right now. How many prospects are we going to need to fill the outfield positions over the next 4 years? Maybe one? How many prospects are we going to need in the infield -- we could do with a good third baseman, that's about it other than maybe the persistent low level concern about Pedroia's frequent minor injuries. We have too MANY prospects at catcher. Our rotation is now so packed that starters are spilling out into the bullpen. Even if we did hoard those prospects where's the impact from the farm going to be felt over the next 3 seasons? Anywhere? And even if there's some -- it won't likely compare favorably to what Chris Sale is going to give us on the top of the rotation. We have a 2-3 year window where graduating prospects to fill the ranks is a luxury not a necessity. I'm just saying, consider the possibility that DD has a pretty damned good idea what he's doing and knows how to build a team, and also knows that at certain points in a team's life cycle, it's time to put the hammer down and sell out to win it big, this being one of them. I'll take that over BC's trying to run the Boston Red Sox like they were the Tampa Bay Devil Rays anyday.
  8. If we traded Buchholz-and-things for Mike Moustakas or Todd Frazier, I would be a happy boy as long as "things" didn't include the guys on our untouchables list.
  9. I was jury-out on Moncada, wasn't in love, wasn't averse. All in favor of this trade. We basically gave away potential, but got multiple years of team control back. That's a move that DD seems to like when he can get it. Gives him time to expand his playoff window before the ride ends and he has to go find another team to try and put over the top.
  10. Soxprospects forum is wearing black to a man and bitterly lamenting this day. But even they can see the potential behind the moves DD just pulled off.
  11. We didn't lose a single surefire asset. DD doesn't value potential when it's years down the road, and the Chisox are retooling. Perfect trade for both teams considering where they are. WE ARE TRYING TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES people. You keep your powder dry and conserve your prospect pool SO YOU CAN MAKE THESE KINDS OF TRADES THAT INCRASE YOUR CHANCE OF WINNING THE WORLD SERIES! You horde talent so you can use it at the right time. This is the right time to use talent. We are not the Kasas City Royals and can not act like we were the Kansas City Royals. Leveraging that talent to maximize a championship bid is as legitimate a use of that prospect pool as drafting and developing homegrown studs yourself. I'm amazed that we got Sale for the price we got him, I thought major league assets going the other way was absolutely definite. If I'd known that price would bring Sale to Boston I'd have been furious if DD had even hesitated. I thought it was going to be a far bigger boondoggle. I have much more problems with the Thorburg trade than with this trade, because the Thorburg trade arguably created one hole to fill another. This trade was just cashing in on potential to buff the roster in a year when we had every chance to win the Series. I'm glad DD pulled this off and think it will go down in our history as a very important trade. *coughbutwewouldn'thaveneededtomakethistradeifwehadn'tlowballedLestercough*
  12. If Pomeranz can pitch in the bullpen and help the team, what's the harm? Wright is a full ERA run worse in the bullpen than he is in the rotation. Pomeranz meanwhile is very used to a swingman role and ought to be fine there. If you have to move one of Wright and Pomeranz to the pen, you move Pomeranz
  13. Ho...leee.....HELL. Well done DD Did not see that coming. Price is high but absolutely fair. So is Wright now our 4th starter? Sweet. Sale Porcello Price Wright Erod/Pomeranz/Buchholz. That is incredible. Moonslav is probably having a fit right now though
  14. Whenever you trade multiple assets for one asset, the breakdown of the asset is a risk you take.
  15. "Moncada" not "Moncado." And yeah, I'd rather run Holt out there every day at third base than rush Moncada at all. Let him get it right in the minors, THEN call him up.
  16. Not all that often, unless the manager does something to pretty thoroughly earn it.
  17. He'd be good off the bench, but aren't we saving the backup 1B role for Sam Travis? Oh wait, is he supposed to be the DH? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA oh god I hope not that would be awful! That is not a starting hitter on the Boston Red Sox, and especially not the goddamned starting DH.
  18. He seems a little raw to count on for Opening Day wouldn't you say? We made that mistake with Middlebrooks, rushing him up before he was really fully cooked, let's not do the same with Moncada.
  19. The only guy we gave up who I'm even worried about is Dubon. And frankly the middle percentile for Dubon is a really good utility man, similar to Alex Cora or Craig Counsell. I think we got a fair deal here, as long as Thornburg is able to repeat his performance in the tougher league.
  20. I think you can scratch Hanley off that list. Just because he used to play there doesn't mean he can do it in his mid 30's. THere's a ton of situations where if it was an option to move Hanley over to 3B, it would have been done. He's strictly a 1B/DH at this point in his career.
  21. Our backup 1B is either Holt (like our backup everything else) or Sam Travis if he has another strong Spring performance. Or... maybe it could be Swihart? His bat is so far ahead of his glove that the temptation to find ways to get that bat into the game any way you can has to be strong.
  22. http://www.outsidepitchmlb.com/brewers-trade-thornburg-red-sox-shaw/57876 Thoughts? Personally I think you either have to have a lot of faith in the Panda to get back to form, or have another plan for how you're going to fill the third base position, to make this trade. Obviously DD knows more than we do about both Panda and about prospects for acquiring other professional third sackers so we'll see how that goes. As for Thornburg himself -- looks pretty sexy and I can see exactly why DD wanted him. He's buying high a bit, but that's standard for DD, we just need to accept and understand that that will happen with him at the helm. Relief help is one of the big areas he needed to deal with and this is a step in the right direction. Add a signing of a guy like Luke Hochevar and we can probably go to war with the bullpen we have, especially with Carson Smith slated to return early in the new year. I'm just a little concerned we may have created one hole to fill another depending on how Panda's recovery is going.
  23. Good by Travis Shaw. Hello, Tyler Thornburg http://www.outsidepitchmlb.com/brewers-trade-thornburg-red-sox-shaw/57876 Not thrilled. Thornburg's a pretty sharp looking reliever, but we just punched a big hole in our corner infield depth and are far too dependent on Panda at the moment at third base, especially since we also traded one of our minor league depth options at the position (Dubon) in the same deal.
  24. Relatively short extension, fitting for an average manager.
  25. I've said this before and I'll say it until I'm proven wrong -- the more likely the White Sox are to trade Sale, the less likely they are to trade Quintana. It's one thing to deal one ace when you have 2, it's another to admit to fans that you know you won't be competitive for at least 5 years that Quintana is super cheap for his production value. A team can trade an abundance in one asset to retool, but they are not going to completely wave the white flag on the next 5 years of baseball and that's exactly what you're expecting the White Sox to do if you think they have any intention at all of trading Quintana. Moonslav, you'd be doing us a big favor if you went a week on this site without saying the words "Quintana" "Frazier" and "Robertson." Find another fantasy trade please. Pie in the sky thinking is one thing, and that's OK, but mix it up. Don't get stuck on only one idea.
