How many people do you think there are out there who are willing to take a backup outfield role and are also half decent at it? I mean, most guys who would be really, really great 4th outfielders (say, David Dejesus) would rather be mediocre starters. Because that's where the money is. it's kind of like finding a really, really good middle reliever. The ones that can really handle that job well tend to rise past it.

No one is talking about Kapler as a starting LF. Right now it's pretty clear that Plan A1 is Holliday and Plan A2 is Bay for that position. However, a solid backup who's more dependable than Baldelli is a benefit.

Kapler would be a decent fit if he's willing to come. He's pretty close to what we need behind our predominately lefthanded outfield and he has been effective over the last couple years. His upside isn't as high as Baldelli's but he's much healthier.

*sigh*..... ..... oh, I might as well. SIZEMORE? Are you freaking KIDDING ME? I know the Guardians are blowing it up but there is NO WAY Grady Sizemore is on the block. If nothing else, the Guardians won't trade him this year because it would constitute selling low. Sizemore is signed through 2012. At 2012 he will cost his team $8.5M a year. that is the most expensive year in his deal. The Guardians would be nuts to deal the guy. Nuts.

Everyone should work with Mo Vaughn and become master power hitters then. Cuz working with a guy who's done it means you'll gain the ability to do that, right? Can't wait for 40 HR Alex Cora because he "worked with" Ortiz. Seriously, I get what you're saying, and you picked two good players because both Tek and Youkilis have a reputation for being smart, not just talented, but you have to have the ability to go with the training. Like in Youkilis' case, you need to have the eye and mental composure to take close pitches before working with him is going to be better than working with a generic hitting coach. I'm sure Federowicz is already doing everything he can on the training front. It'll come down to his ability.

He's got a point, Jacko. Even if you really meant Kalish that's a pretty ridiculous thing to say.

Saito was a good guy to have in the middle to bottom of your bullpen. If you can get him at a reasonable price there's no reason not to go after him, especially since (IIRC) we can't offer him arbitration.

Jacko might have confused Reddick and Kalish. That's the closest thing to a sane interpretaion of his opinion I can come up with.

You know as well as I do that none of those guys has any realistic chance to be as good as Mauer. That's why I'm not talking about Exposito, Wagner, Federowicz and Lavarnway.

That's another reason to be hopeful for a relatively gentle Mauer deal. Honestly, the Yankees should be after Mauer too. Montero, Gardner and Hughes would make a powerful case for them.

oh, it'll be pricey, but when you put Ellsbury and Bard into the package those 3 other guys probably aren't going to be prime prospects. Besides, the Twins have/had an odd system and tend to find a way to win these trades without forcing a team's absolute top prospects out of them. Like a former mediocre starter named Joe Nathan for example...

It would be a lot less massive if Ellsbury was in it. He's just about the perfect Minnesota player.

Alright then. I might look at him as a CF replacement if we do something crazy like trade Ellsbury for Beltran, or might look at him as one heck of a 4th OF, but he's not starting LF material in Boston. Speaking of Ellsbury, am I the only one that thinks he might be an interesting player to the Twins in a potential Joe Mauer deal? We know Span plays RF, we know they can sort Kubel and Cuddyer out using LF and DH. We know they love super-speedy contact hitters. We know we want Mauer, especially if we can extend him. Mauer would make me forget pretty quickly how much I loved Ellsbury's speed, and a Reddick-Baldelli platoon is a price worth paying for having Mauer catching games for us.

I gotta say this BSN07. I agree with most of the guys on your list but do you really think David Dejesus is anywhere on our radar as a possible LF? He just doesn't have the bat to play there and nis power is pretty marginal, especially as an LHH.

And when they sign Bay or Holliday there will still be a substantial gap with the Yankees that needs to be closed. And playing just for this year is not going to close it. Not to mention what sticking too long with the wrong guy will do to us. Look what it did to the Yankees over the last few years.

THe prospects to fill most of those holes aren't exactly in place either, so it's either FA or trade.

I agree. The only minor league player we absolutely need to keep hold of right now IMHO is one of Reddick and Kalish.
