  1. I could go for Mahay or Beimel. We're not looking for a closer type IMHo, just a depth lefty to take the pressure off Oki, since when he gets tired it tends not to be pretty.
  2. Betre's Dominican. If he counted, Ortiz counted and none of these people would have had a leg to stand on.
  3. I'm with you. And the fielding should help Matsuzaka and Buchholz through their struggles too.
  4. Our biggest need now is for a semi-dependable LHRP so we don't overwork Oki with setup and matchup duties..
  5. I think either Tatis, or a third catcher, would be the perfect compliment.
  6. Yeah, thing about Cameron, no he's not as good as Bay or Holliday, but he's a better fit from a franchise-health perspective. We've got a lot of dead money right now, until it comes off the books big money risks (other than the draft) are unlikely.
  7. This is a good deal. Our outfield was a bit shallow in CF. Hall helps there. Our infield was weak at SS and 2B. Hall helps there. This really frees us up to do a whole bunch of different things with that last roster spot -- the one we'll free up by trading Lowell I mean. Could even carry Dusty Brown or Mark Wagner if we wanted to have a third catcher with some defensive chops. If VMart is going to be taking some starts at DH it might make sense to give that a try.
  8. Hall and a PTBNL then? Not bad for a 1B who can't hit.
  9. Because the lineup should be more robust. With a bit of luck we won't be carrying players at the bottom of the lineup who are there only because they're warm bodies who play a position on the field. If you have 9 productive hitters instead of 7 or 8, you're more likely to have someone step up and get hot when someone else is slumping.
  10. could we be trading for Bill Hall? would fit either needed role for us -- UT OF/IF or UT IF. Experience at SS and CF would make him an exemplary bench guy, and there's the whole "RHH at Fenway" thing going for it too.
  11. If you leave out 2004 (and I think you have to) that 2008 mark represents his career high. 35-45 walks is a more reasonable expectation. And a .290 average is a bit optimistic, even with park factors figured in. Still, I can't rule it out I guess.
  12. With a bit of luck with balls in play, he could work it all the way up to a whopping .330. Not that the guy he was replacing was exactly Dave Magadan though, so it's all good I guess. Speaking of Dave, might be interesting to see what he can do with Beltre. It would seem like Magadan is a past master of exactly the lessons Beltre needs to learn.
  13. Well, define "easy out." We'll have Beltre as a very low OBP hitter, but when he's not making outs left right and center, he'll hit fairly productively. And Scutaro is also not known for his home run swing, but he makes pitchers work when he's up there. certainly no one on the magnitude of 2009 Jason Varitek will get regular at bats next year. If Tek himself does, it won't be hard to cut him.
  14. Well, one alternative they had was simply playing Ellsbury in centerfield because it was important to the future of the franchise for him to learn how to handle it, or because he's more of an ideal CF than he is a corner infielder. Ellsbury will definitely get at least a few starts in CF anyway, because Hermida doesn't play there very well and when he's in, Ells is the natural choice to move.
  15. I don't see a big change. A slight downtick, little more than the standard deviation. May go the other way if Big Papi has a contract-year push. I'd like to hope some of our young players like Reddick, Kalish, Wagner and Anderson can come through a bit towards the middle of the season. Reddick in particular could be a huge factor in erasing any regression, if he can get on form. Any chance Jorge Jimenez gets returned to us? I'd really like to have the depth he represents at third base. I don't like the idea of being 2 inconveniently timed minor injuries (one to Youk, one to another CIF) away from being screwed.
  16. So we're going max D. Interesting. I can get behind that. Maybe playing the corners will allow Ellsbury to condition a bit more and add some power.
  17. A LHRP, hopefully.
  18. It'll come down to Brandon Wood. Almost positive he'll get a long look at 3B this Spring with Maicer Izturis as the alternate. if Wood earns the job and produces, the Angels are a force to be reckoned with.
  19. Not wild about the bottom rung of said bullpen actually. I'd like to see if we can't get our hands on a veteran LHRP instead of leaning on Richardson.
  20. With so much riding on RHH's who are monster-dependent, we might struggle on the road. I think we'll dominate at home though and that's the important part..
  21. Ellsbury Pedroia Drew Youkilis Ortiz Martinez Cameron/Hermida Beltre Scutaro
  22. Honestly, I'm kinda warming to the idea. I certainly recognize the value of good defense, and Beltre will at least be a good defender. if he regains his power he can probably contribute at the bottom of the order. With Drew, Youkilis, Martinez, Ortiz, and Hermida/Cameron all viable to hit ahead of him you can crowd him down to the 7 or 8 hole unless it's obvious he deserves to hit higher so it's not like we're penciling him in for the 4 hole. And it has the virtue of being pretty much a 1 year deal anyway, so that's a plus.
  23. Sure, but he's -11 there in career UZR/150, and Green is +4.
  24. I'd go for Tatis because besides a better corner outfield glove than Gomes', he can put the nail in Kotchman's coffin by playing corner infield.
