  1. It's so nice to have Baseball back...
  2. Batting average isn't a very good stat to determine offensive prowess. It leaves too much out. I'd rather have a .270 AVG with a lot of walks and good power than a .340 average that's all singles.
  3. Not yet. if a girl is going to make it it's not going to be as a knuckleballer. Knuckleballers have enough trouble cracking a big league roster as it is. it's going to be some female freak of nature that can do something most of the elite male baseball players can't do, like throw 100, or run freaky fast, or be a super-slick fielding middle infielder, or hit for insane power. There may eventually be average female baseball players, or female baseball players that are not superstars, but in order to get the league's attention, the first one is going to have to be a flat out undeniable talent, that's just a fact.
  4. You're very wrong. He has demonstrated the ability to combine a .350 OBP, gap power, and far stronger defense than either Jeter or Ramirez. If he were a 3B or a LF, sure that'd be average, maybe even below average. As a SS, if he can put his talent together into the complete package we saw for a few months in 2008, he'll be one of the better SS in the league -- and that's ignoring the very distinct possibility that he could go further than that, especially with his power potential which is largely untapped at the big league level. That's not to say he won't have it very tough in 2010 though. wrist injuries are a beast to come back from and some never manage it. But I believe the potential is still there.
  5. Did I say he was an elie player? Or did I say he'd shown flashes of elite potential? Why exactly do Derek Jeter and Hanley Ramirez have any basis in comparison to "flashes" of elite "potential?" You believe in UZR, you've used it before when it suited your argument. We have a guy who's showed us two distinct samples in the mid 20's UZR/150. That's elite defense. Combining that with a .350 OBP before he got hurt, out of the shortstop position, and then tacking at least gap power onto that, is not elite potential? Why exactly are you being a jackass about this?
  6. Don't give up on Lowell at third, as long as his defense is an improvement on last year he has the bat to carry himself there. If Beltre can't come out the gate strong I wouldn't be too surprised if Lowell started earning some consistent starts. Beltre and Youk are both good bets to spell Lowell and keep him fresh, and V-Mart's going to need to take some turns at first anyway, so if it comes to it we're in a good position to keep the pressure off Mikey and let him rest when he needs it. as for Cameron, I think the FO's counting on Reddick and/or Kalish to come up in midseason if needed. So if Cameron plays up to his career levels, great, if not, we do have alternatives.
  7. Yeah because I didn't thoroughly explain what I meant by that at least twice. Thank you for your contribution to the overall quality of thought in this forum.
  8. I wonder where that guy who got the leadoff HR against Daisuke wound up? Anyone remember that? Was his name Ayers?
  9. Cue the undeserved Rask-panic. Delicious.
  10. Never, ever, ever get your hopes up. Ever.
  11. Fact remains though, that Pena costs just money. Adgon won't. Fielder won't. Both Pena and Dunn are cost-effective ways to add 30-40 or so HR's to your lineup without killing your other offensive numbers or draining your talent pool. I don't care if you hit them seventh, they'll be big helps to your lineup. And if you really want to spend the money on an elite producer at 1B (assuming Pena somehow isn't one, but nevermind) Dunn: LF Pena: DH/1B Fielder/Adgon: 1B/DH
  12. Yeah, but the fact remains that you could say exactly the same thing about Adrian Gonzalez.
  13. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/G/Adrian-Gonzalez.shtml
  14. Way I see it after looking at this guy is, we have hundreds of minor league innings showing excellent rate stats, and an 11 inning big league sample showing poor results. Honestly, if I had to pick which one I'd weight in favor of I'd pick the minor league sample.
  15. If I do, Dipre will go Angry Latino on me again.
  16. It's not impossible. He doesn't have to hit at Adgon's level* to be as valuable as Adgon. 2B >>>> 1B * (read: The level he's produced at for exactly one season)
  17. Less than 24 hours from the first games, they have yet to release their gameday audio package. It's not like this is a date that's likely to sneak up on these people, they've only been blaring it all over their homepage for about a month now, and passionate baseball fans nationwide and worldwide had to have been peppering them with questions about this since mid February at the latest. There is no excuse not to have had the Gameday Audio package available for substription 3 WEEKS ago. If I have to miss even Spring Training games because Major League Baseball is once again more interested in profit taking than it is on maintaining a good product, I'm going to be switching my position on their antitrust exemption. Clearly these guys need them some competition.
  18. Cue the obligatory lame "World Series Here We Come" I like the strikeout numbers. This guy could become useful down the road.
  19. Not next year he won't. How long are we going to be plugging in substandard CIF's waiting for the pipe dream?
  20. Mine's all boy, we named him "Tux." For as long as we've lived here we've had a steady delivery of cats on our doorstep within a year of losing the last one. Mama jost drops them off in the yard, and it's up to us to lure them into the house. Last year we had THREE kittens show up all at the same time, Tux was one of them.
  21. i like your kitty. I have a very similar looking beast splayed out on my chest watching me type this.
  22. And if you can add a power-hitting LF to that, it gets even better.
  23. I'd go to Dunn if we have a 3B and are mostly looking for a full time DH, to Pena if Beltre flames out and Lowell is gone, and we need to slide Youks over and bring in a guy who can cover 1B defensively. Actually though, there's no particular reason we can't have both. 3B: Youks 1B: Pena DH: Dunn A backup 3B might be advisable, but is not strictly speaking necessary.
  24. Then we probably get a first round pick out of him. Nice way to say goodbye.
