  1. I've always liked the guys who didn't start with a ton of talent and managed to earn their way on the roster. Guys like Brian Daubach for example Also, I don't care how much of a jerk he was or that he wound up a Yankee, I liked Wade Boggs a lot, ditto for Clemens. I also have a bit of a soft spot for Timmy Wakefield. He has a great year this year, he could win #200.
  2. For the record, I think Chia is handing the NTC's out in order to stay under the cap and attract as much talent as he can. It's a calculated risk for a team that doesn't have a ton of wiggle room. This whole situation will look much better by draft day IMHO. BTW when the next CBA comes due, I'm pretty sure both sides will be willing to give a little in order to get a little. The current system is broken and I don't think it's really serving either side well, so as long as both sides have their eyes on the prize and are willing to compromise and make reasonable sacrifices, we might see a whole different situation in the next agreement -- or they could get into another huge labor war and get nothing done.
  3. Hanley's probably going to move to third in a couple years, his bat plays there and his glove would be better there too.
  4. I wouldn't know, the preseason games aren't broadcast over the radio up here.
  5. You mean other than the blameshifting, refusing to accept responsibility for his own poor performance, and burning his bridges -- again?
  6. Not to mention, Hanley has a much much better arm at short, and he can make plays in the hole Jeter just has to eat.
  7. I've long since given up hope for Bradley. Which is a pity, since he's very talented, but when you combine his awful attitude and declining defense, he just isn't worth putting up with.
  8. Yunel Escobar is a very good bat with average defense by UZR/150. To be "elite" IMHO either the bat or the glove needs to improve one more tick. Yunel certainly has elite potential, if he can improve that last little but, but I'd say he's not there yet. On a largely unrelated note, I've fished for a comment on this before and didn't get a bite, so I'll outright ask: does anyone see Lowrie actually abandoning hitting from the left side if that wrist continues to be an issue, and just hits from the right side, and would that actually accomplish anything meaningful?
  9. Dunno, kinda liked Reddick's double. IIRC it was against a LHP too. ya ya, I know, taken by itself it means nothing, but still it was a nice sign.
  10. This is not the first time Thomas has had to make do with irregular playing time. If it came to it I didn't really think Thomas would struggle to adjust to backing up, he's done it most of his career. It's dealing with the long grind of starting that's always been his bugaboo.
  11. Wouldn't have made sense at the time. There was no guarantee that Rask would be this ready. You have to look at these signings in the context of the time they were made, and when they were made, Rask was the veteran of exactly 5 NHL games and the Bruins thought they were a top team in the league, that's not a good time to play Russian Roulette in net. I still think Thomas' contract is tradable. Probably only as a salary dump or for a low pick now, but someone will take the guy on at that price I think. All the no-trade clause means IMHO is that he's probably going to be moved to a contender.
  12. Claimed by the Jays.
  13. Trolling Jacko is trolling.
  14. Alright, agreed on that point, although Florida's actually a better HR park for RHH's than NYS, which has a fairly deep left field. Also the same jetstream that practically allows you to homer on a popup to right bends the ball to center if you drive it to left.
  15. I'm not counting on Cameron to be a starting CF in the second year of his deal. He's in his late 30's and has already avoided a move to the corners longer than all but the most elite defensive CF. On the flipside, if we do sign Dunn or another LHH power outfielder, Cameron could be very valuable as a 3 position platoon OF behind three lefthanded starting outfielders which while not a starting gig could be very valuable indeed -- he could also enhance his value off the bench by coming in late at LF, or at CF moving Ellsbury to LF, to help lock down the game when we have the lead.
  16. Can you imagine Hanley's numbers peppering the wall at Fenway? He's built better to double off the wall than he is to homer the other way at NYS.
  17. They haven't cut Brown yet? I'm moderately surprised. I'm guessing he'll be a casualty of a 40-man roster need or a AAA catcher squeeze at some point this year.
  18. I agree with you. But the fossilized baseball brains that have to approve the contract? The ones that have stepped in to block precedent-setting women at least once in the past? You need to convince them, not me..
  19. *sighhhhhh* I know this. But she's still one of the better players in her sport. And that's the level any potential female MLB player would need to reach. They wouldn't need to just be good enough to BE MLB players, there's a lot of AAAA men that match that description. They'd need to be good enough to STAND OUT as MLB players.
  20. Lateral move, maybe a bit of cap savings. Looks like Chia's doing his usual and holding pat at the deadline. Well, it's gotten us into the playoffs 2 of the 3 years he's done it, so not complaining.
  21. There are enough male knuckleballers that I don't think this is really an "in" for women. Any woman wanting to crack MLB needs to be a Danica Patrick -- clearly one of the better players of her day of either genders. She'd need to be an attractive enough prospect as a baseball player to convince America's most hidebound sports league to set aside its prejudices. I just don't think a female k-baller is going to get the kind of audience she needs to prove that. Not before a few females with enough talent to play a conventional game of ball at the big league level come first. I'm not saying I expect it. Heck, I'm not even sure it's possible. But that's what needs to happen.
  22. If Lowrie continues to have injury problems with his left hand, it might be the end of his switch-hitting, which would leave him fairly weak against RHP since he has little practice facing them from the right side.
  23. I can't fault a guy for getting enthusiastic about prospects. I certainly hope and believe that we'll get at least one decent shortstop for this team out of Lowrie and Iglesias. I could see Iglesias as an Orlando Cabrera type, and that wouldn't be a bad thing to have. I still hold out hope that Lowrie could become a switch hitting Yunel Escobar type. You can combine those two to great effect..
