  1. Well sure. The man projects as a power hitting SS right now, and those are freaking valuable. Personally I do put Bradley ahead of him just because he's closer to the bigs but that's me.
  2. Move the players we can replace immediately, which have value enough to help re-stock the upper minors. Those players are Salty, Aviles, and Ross. Maybe throw in one of our middle relievers like Albers or Miller as well if you can get someone to overpay (unlikely). And when they're gone, you call up Kalish, Iglesias and Lavarnway and see if you can't luck out, have those guys produce at about the level of their replacements collectively, and use the trade return return to stay competitive. No Beckett. Sorry. You're not going to get an ROI worth your trouble there. Teams don't take on the players you WANT to lose without you making it worth their while, and no. No Lester. I don't sell low on LHSP that talented. If things take a turn for the worse between now and 7/31 I put Papi on the block too, just to see what I could get for him. I doubt he'd be moved, but you never know. I didn't think Youk would be traded.
  3. The message is "we screwed up taking the reins off one kid too early and are determined not to make the same mistake twice."
  4. They're gunshy after what happened to Bard. Just because a kid is pitching well doesn't mean you drop the reins and let them have their head.
  5. Actually they technically brought him up as a shortstop, but that's the position he was playing in Paw at the time. He probably could have stuck at short if we'd asked him to, but he wouldn't be the natural star caliber defender he is at second.
  6. This just in, Bill James likes child rapists. Come on, can you possibly be any more over the top sensationalist about the child rape angle? I mean I'm not even saying you're wrong, but holy crap dude. He probably should be reprimanded, but let me ask this -- what evidence does everyone have that he hasn't been? The Red Sox don't exactly take their employees out to Fenway and flog them on the pitcher's mound. I just think screaming for blood on this one is a bit ridiculous, even if you think as I do that James was absolutely wrong to say what he said. Last time I checked, people in this country were still entitled to their opinion.
  7. Yep. We face Youkilis tonight. And I am completely unimpressed at this. He is neither the best hitter on his new team, nor was he the best hitter here. There is literally no reason to be horrified to be facing Kevin Youkilis, any more than it would to be facing any other similarly talented hitter.
  8. Nava is clearly the only ballplayer in human history to have a horrible month. Sorry guys, been out with some computer issues -- namely, my bro came for an extended visit and "my" computer, which is actually Dad's computer, got put in mothballs for awhile. Nava's line is still pretty decent even with the slump. .265/.384/.425/.809 is actually somewhere around what I feel is his actual talent level -- maybe bump the AVG up to .275 or so. IF he hits any better than that on a year, he's a starting left fielder somewhere in this league.
  9. The DH hurts him, the steroid era hurts him worse, and his countin' stats aren't great because he didn't get the chances he needed in Minnesota.
  10. Which is all SFF said anyway.
  11. He deserves the right to pitch his way out of the rotation at this point.
  12. Even if he bounces back, he's just one more pretty good hitter. As for Nava, I think our current starting LF and one of the best leadoff men in the league at the moment is a fair topic for conversation. More so than a once-good player who's been divorced from the team in all but fact for this entire season.
  13. Oh give it a rest, a700. We heard you 15 pages ago. You're being ridiculously paranoid here.
  14. As long as he keeps pitching like this it's a no-brainer as long as the FO doesn't overthink.
  15. If he gets promoted to Portland this year, then he's in range for a callup in the second half of next season. If there's any chance at all he's an actual shortstop, that'd be pretty exciting. With Middlebrooks though, if Bogaerts wants a real chance to stick here, he's got to stay at short. As for Iglesias, I'll call it now. One of the finest utility men in the game. Brilliant defensive replacement type. That's not intended to demean him as such -- there's a place for players like that in the big leagues, and he would be among the very best of them. could probably fill in as a D-only starter on a weak team well enough but we're not a weak team..
  16. Still hitting .265/.338/.515 with 16 HR and 34 RBI.
  17. Unless you have a pretty stupid boss, are in training, have an unskilled entry level job, or are filling the exact role your boss recently filled, most bosses will admit they know less about the ins and outs of how you need to do your job than you do. THe job of the boss is to keep the office productive, not to know every last little detail about everyone's day. Under the circumstances it's frequently the role of a worker to (politely) inform the boss of their proper role, and the exact terms of the employment contract. Just don't get an attitude about it.
  18. And the salary is not a good reason to play him if another player is more productive. The only reason to play the more highly paid player is to justify the contract and make an executive look good. I'd rather win than make our executives look good.
  19. He was facing the Orioles when he had his freakout.
  20. Indeed. We have this tendency to overthink things around here. Plugging in Crawford will happen because of front office politics -- and that's the worst of all possible reasons to do anything positionally.
  21. Sure -- but the question you have to ask is whether the diminished Pedroia is better or worse than no Pedroia at all while he would be healing. If we weren't desperate for middle infielders I'd say let him take his rest. Unfortunately, we traded Jed Lowrie and now we're a bit exposed up the middle as a result and I'd r ather have Dot in the lineup as infrequently as possible.
