  1. Lenny Dinardo is a much better pitcher than Aaron Small. Last year he was suffering both from injuries and bad luck. This year, with a normal HR/FB rate you see what happens, especially in a large ball park. With a 2.3 GB/FB ratio you aren't going to be that bad especially in Oakland. That said, Dinardo has been the benficiary of a high strand rate that is likely unsustainable. He reminds me of Kurt Saarloos, whom the A's got some benefit out of before shipping him off when he became expensive. When you have a payroll like the Red Sox, you can't experiment on the likes of Lenny Dinardo. When you have a team like the A's that can't afford a Tavarez as their long-man. You bet on the likes of Dinardo and hope he works out.
  2. With the exception of an oustanding May, Youkilis has struggled for the enitre year. If Youk can't get it togeather before the end of the month, I think you need to give Carter some ABs at 1B, defensive butcher or not.
  3. There are many that credit Joe Girardi with getting keeping after Hanley and getting him to take the game seriously, which in turn unlocked his considerable talent. I think its possible that if Hanley stays with the Sox he's still in AAA bored, dogging it, and wasting his talent.
  4. I think we need to accept that Kason Gabbard was extremely lucky in his time with the Sox. He had a .210 BABIP, numbers like this are simply not sustainable over time. The difference between Gabbard and Lester for the rest of the year is likely to be slight at best. Over time, Lester is defintely the better prospect. It often takes 18 months for a guy to recover from cancer, and it hasn't even been 12 since Lester began treatment. There can be no doubt that the value Gagne adds is greater than the difference between Gabbard and Lester.
  5. Hanley also isn't really a SS, from everything I've read, he's eventually going to have to move to CF. He's an excellent offensive player, but I'll still take Beckett and Lowell considering at the time that Hanley was dogging it in AA.
  6. Rdsxmbnt- I assume that you want to know my source for this. I wish I could tell you that I heard it from scouts that were friends of mine and that I have inside knowledge. Unfortunately that isn't true. Peter Gammons does a weekly intereview on 890 AM Thursdays. What was interesting about what Texas did during this period, is that they got a bunch of guys that are very talented but several years from the big leagues (Andrus, Beltre, Ramirez). One of the pitchers he got in the Texiera trade might also fit this description. According to Gammons (paraphrasing): "It was thought that he (Rangers GM Daniels), was trading for his job. But he got three guys that are at least four years from the big leagues, but most scouts say would be in the top 10-15 picks in the draft if it were held today" From that I infered that the scouts that Gammons talked to thought that Beltre would be drafted in the first half of the first round if he were drafted.
  7. I'm sure Scaff agrees with most everyone in major league baseball. Beltre is certainly an excellent prospect, but is still very raw. In four years he could be one of the most exciting young players in the game. But he could also be Luis Soto. When the World Series is at stake you have to give up players like this. Most scouts believe that if he were in the draft next year he'd be a top ten pick.
  8. Scaff also believes that "there are guys in AAA who could put up the same numbers as Youkilis". This is flatout untrue, and I don't see how anyone could possibly believe this. If you do, most fans are going to call you on it. Anyone who can't take being called on a statement such as this shouldn't be posting on a message board. Its really sad because its possible that Scaff has a point about the Latin prospects not getting a fair shake. God knows the Sox haven't been that successful in developing them. But unfortunately when you say that a guy like Kevin Youkilis is no good, it clouds any other opinons you might have.
  9. Maybe its just me....but if it was DelCarmen plus Pena on the table for Dye I would have done that too.
  10. Clay Buchholz please.
  11. Scaff- Saying that there are guys in AAA who could be just as good as Youkilis, is just plain wrong. Calling you on this isn't a "crush", its just a statement of fact. One that I think most posters with I think most posters would completely agree. It does appear that open mindedness only extends to other people not just yourself. You can't accept that OBP is an important stat, maybe the most important. If you can't accept that, then you are just as close minded as a dinosaur. For the record, I do find Scaffolds reports on the more obscure prospects interesting. But if the price to pay for that, is that we aren't allowed to call him on his refusal to admit that he was wrong about Youkilis, Pedroia, and probably Lowrie, then don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.
  12. As of late Mike Timlin has pitched very well. He's shown that when healthy, he is a very good and valuable pitcher. The problem has been staying healthy, and surprise, he's hurt again.
  13. Another reason for the move is that Jacoby is injured so they need another CF in case something happens to Crisp. If he plays well over the next month, he may get a September call up.
  14. some of scaffolds opinons were questioned on the board by myself and other posters. He considers posting here to be a service, and as a condition of that service, people who don't know baseball are not allowed to question his opinions on anything baseball related, no matter how outlandish they are. In his opinion, there are guys in AAA who could put up the same numbers as Youkilis. I personally find this opinion ridiculous, and if he doesn't want to be called on stuff like that, best of luck to him.
  15. 700- You've made it clear you don't like Youkilis for whatever reason, but to imply that his manager is making "excuses for him" is crap. Its merely been reported that he has a strained quad, and others have opined, correctly I might add, that it could be effecting Youkilis' performance. Neither Francona, nor Youkilis have done any whinning or made excuses. Injuries are not excuses, they are reasons to explain why a player might not have performed of late, and why its reasonable to believe that the player might perform better once the injury passes. Youkilis will never be a 30HR guy but he doesn't have to be to be a good player, especially when he's only paid $300K a year. Guys with 15-20HR power frequently have long stretches where they don't hit a lot of home runs. Why despite his strong performance proving that he's a solid major league player, people continue to hate on Youkilis is beyond me.
  16. Schilling is going to be back in about two weeks. Why bring up a guy who has been inconsistant in AAA for just a couple of starts? Obviously either Gabbard, or Tavarez has to leave the rotation once he comes back. Right now, Gabbard is in the lead to keep his spot.
  17. 700. There is a huge difference between aches and pains and an injury which can actually hamper your performance. Youkilis generally plays through anything and was held out nearly a week. I think its safe to say that what he has was a bit more than your run of the mill aches and pains.
  18. 700....you don't think that has anything to do with his recent quad injury?
  19. I heard this interview driving home yesterday. Gammons adamant conclusion was that Scott Boras' people didn't know what they were doing and that they should NOT be listening to Boras. They ARE not prolonging the careers of these players but are instead ruining them. Gammons also thought that Teixiera didn't listen to his hitting coach, who is highly regarded, in favor of Boras' people and that this was to his detriment. He also concluded that DiceK doesn't listen to Boras at all. "The relationship between DiceK and John Farrell is very strong" said Gammons.
  20. Scaffolds wrote me that he will not be posting here anymore. He wrote that he only posts here as a "service" to the board. As a condition of the service that he is providing, he's made it clear that we cannot question him or his record. If people beg him to come back, he might resume his "service".
  21. Scaff- I don't think that anyone in their right mind thinks that Josh Papelbon is a top prospect. Not even "Abefromen". He's 24, pitching in low A ball with peripherals that are decent but not dominant. However, you take this one step further and say that Papelbon deserves no credit for pitching decently and should just be thrown away in favor of players who haven't performed well. In other words, you still have missed the overall point in that you seem to sing the praises of terrible players if they are Latin and want white players who are performing well to be shown the door. You even take this to the extreme by trying to imply that Julio Lugo is almost as good as Youkilis! I agree with your point that its possible that the Red Sox aren't doing all they can to develop and nurture young talented Latin players, but you take it to the extreme. Its likely that none of the players mentioned in this discussion are ever going to make the majors.
  22. Usually when players are 29 years old they aren't prospects. Yet to every rule there are some exceptions and Hansack maybe one of them. Some guys just figure out how to pitch later than others. Hansack especially happened to live in a country that is not heavilly scouted. You have to like how well he's pitched in AAA this year and that's not easy to do no matter how old you are. He's at least a major league long-man maybe more and if you can do that you are a top 20 prospect. I agree that saying that he's above a guy who's 23 and has a .900 OPS in AA is a bit outrageous, but consider the source.
  23. The guy I'd try in the 5th spot is Joel Piniero. Piniero is the only guy on the team who has pitched well as a starter in the majors before. Perhaps if stretched out and on a regular schedule he could at least get them into the 6th inning once in a while. With DelCarmen established as the 7th inning guy and Donneley possibly comming back, it might be the perfect time to experiment with Piniero.
