The Guardians got a NICE haul here. They were worried about their OF production and they add two mashers to their OF. Puig’s numbers this year are tamped down by an awful start, but he’s been crushing it for the past 3 months. Reyes is a light tower power stud who is controllable beyond Bauer’s time. Allen has struggled in his first taste of the bigs, but he’s a top 100 prospect. He lands in a very soft spot for him, in a place that has a great track record of developing pitching talent. I don’t know much about Nova, but he is irrelevant here. It sounds like the Guardians were done with Bauer’s antics and must be reasonable assured that Carrasco and Kluber were returning. The Padres get a top 20 prospect to add to their stable of amazing prospects. They gave up a lot in Reyes and Allen, but they must love Trammel who’s scuffling in AA but is young and has a 5 tool arsenal. The Padres, interestingly enough, take on the most risk here by dealing an established power hitter with years of control and a top 100 prospect. Trammel needs to become great to offset their losses here, unless the Pads think they’re selling high on Reyes. The Reds get Bauer and gave up a top 20 prospect plus a rental in Puig. I have to imagine that they thought they could get more from Bauer flipping him themselves. Maybe their deal with NY for Gray gave them some inside info on the Yankee system? Dealing Andujar to the Reds makes little sense with the CIF positions locked for years. Maybe they’re looking at Frazier plus? Not sure. Or do they think they can add Bauer to a rotation that includes Gray and Castillo and make a run in 2020? Maybe they think they can move Bauer to the Astros? I’m not sure about their motivation, but this deadline took a weird turn with the best starters moving to non-contenders maybe due to their extra year of team control?

Yanks are apparently in on a combo of Ray and Bradley. Bradley has been an elite reliever until this season. Ray cut his walk rate down, but he’s another lefty with big stuff who is prone to the tater ball. He does fit a need, though, as a guy who will give us 5 innings and hand the ball to the pen. Both are controllable beyond this season

Andujar tips the scales over most anyone. He’s controllable for four more years and was second in ROY voting last year. He’s a legit middle of the order hitter. The biggest question on Bauer is if the Guardians are actually looking to deal him. I’ve been baited into the thought, but with Kluber and Carrasco still down, I have a hard time believing they’re gonna deal their most reliable starter when they’re 2 back of the Twins and firmly sitting in the 1st WC slot

Diaz is on league minimum with 3 more years of control. His fastball velocity has shown no sign of regression and his BABIP is almost .400. He's been exceedingly unlucky. Whomever acquires Diaz may be acquiring an ace closer, but they may not see it until next season

The offense cannot run this hot forever. Merloni talked about it on EEI. Yeah, it's all well and good that the O dropped over 35 runs on the Yanks in 3 games, but what happens when they're up 3-2 in the 8th against the Yanks or Rays. You wanna go on a long winning streak or suppress a team through a whole series, you gotta have the pen to do it. A lot of the sox woes this year have had to do with the s***** pen work. Either leaving a starter in too long because of the bad pen or the pen blowing it outright. You gotta fix it

I also wonder if they keep him, tag him with DeGrom and Stroman and run through the NL East next year. If that is the plan, then keeping Diaz would make more sense.

If Diaz is moved, the Mets will get a big package. If he actually hits the market, I wonder if the sox could compete with the offers that will be there from Minnesota or the Dodgers. Remember, Jansen can opt out after this year and Diaz might be the heir apparent should he go

I think the Stroman question was whether he was as good as he had been to this point. Last year, Stroman threw to a 5+ERA with nearly the same peripherals. Heck, last year, his xFIP was better than this season's. My guess is the Jays either didn't want to face Stroman in division or they added a premium to Stroman that they didn't offer to the Mets. I have a very hard time thinking the Yankees offer didn't top the pitchers sent to the Mets. That package, while not terrible, is not an elite package and one that including Frazier should have sufficed. I doubt we go for Boyd. Yes, he is a big boy. Yes, his K totals are insane. But he has been trending in the wrong direction for awhile now. 15HR in his last 10 starts, ERA's of 5.90 and 4.70 the last two months after an elite April and May. He also isn't a prototypical power pitcher, which means we would be getting a better JA Happ. I'm okay with that if the acquisition cost wasn't huge, but getting Boyd will cost a metric ton and we have enough in the arsenal to pry away maybe one big fish. I am not sure if this guy is the one. I would rather get Minor for less prospects than get Boyd for more.

ESPN had a graphic about Sale’s fastball velocity. When under 94, his OPS against is over 1.000. When over 94, it’s under .600. Sale’s fastball wasn’t the issue last night. He couldn’t keep his slider in the zone and his change was just hanging there. He had some velocity last night with some 95+ pitches, but mostly sat right around 92-94. Sale is in a transition phase, which makes his extension just extraordinarily stupid. They didn’t have to offer it when they did. Sale needs to focus on the lower part of the zone. Nibble corners, sweep the slider for the K. Use the change more. With Sale’s stuff in flux, you’re still gonna see high K numbers, but he’s gonna leave more than his fair share of balls in the middle and that’s gonna result in high Hr totals and high ER totals. We saw this with CC in 2012-2013. He became unreliable. He never regained ace level reliability, but he gained respectability and consistency when he transitioned to a crafty lefty vs a power lefty

I faced a few. Faced a future major league reliever for the Jays and Sox. Single-K-K. Doubled off a Sox first rounder the week after he was drafted which was cool. Flamed out in AAA. Took an 8th rounder from the A’s deep in an all star game. He flamed out in low A. Faced a kid who was drafted in the 6th round in college. Hardest pitches I’ve seen thrown. Topped out at 98.
