actually, since June 3rd, the yankees have the 4th best record in baseball, right around .625 win %. They have shown life, but the hole they were put in SHOULD have been fatal. But with the sox on the snide against awful competition and the yankees having a joke of a schedule into mid August, there looks like the pennant race might be returning.
I said before, that the only way the yankees could come back was if the sox faltered. It was no longer a factor that the yankees controlled. And I didnt think it could happen with Schilling, DMats, and Beckett throwing lights out (at the time) and Wakefield being effective. Hell, even Tavarez had a string where he was solid. While our pitching was Pettitte, Wang and pray for rain. And with Manny and Papi not getting on a roll yet, I figured the sox were primed to improve. But Schill fell apart then went on the DL (which I am skeptical was due to an actual injury), Wakefield started to resemble a batting tee, and Tavarez fell apart.
Now the roles are reversed. Clemens is pitching well, Mussina is improving, Pettitte is back on track, and Wang is pitching like the ace he is. If Hughes comes back strong, then they could have one hell of a 5. But even with the 7 game deficit in the L column, the yankees STILL need help. So, if the sox get their s*** straight, then they should be fine. But they will need the real Schilling to return.
