I think the chumps on the yankees still exist, and I wouldnt be terribly surprised if they went into a hole. But as I said before, I was upset with the yankees because they would have stretches of having parts of their game look solid while other parts failed. Solid offense with s***** pitching. Solid pitching with s***** offense. Solid pitching and offense, s***** bullpen. And worst of all, aside from ARod, no clutch hitters and nobody seemed to be healthy. Over the recent stretch, the pen has improved, so the leads have been kept. Over the recent stretch, the offense has still sputtered, but we have been getting the hits with RISP. And most importantly, 4 out of every 5 starters seem to be keeping us in the game. Imagine what could happen if the slumping players like Damon, Abreu, and Cano actually turn it on. The yankees have room for improvement, IMO and so long as their pitching doesnt take a hit, should be able to sustain a certain amount of success. Now, I dont expect them to continue playing .700 ball, but you see my point.
With the sox, their offense certainly could improve. No clutch hits, and surprisingly, absolutely no power. Last night you had what, 1 EBH? At the same time, I think Francona has killed your offense by putting players in spots where they wont succeed. Youk in the 5 hole is a joke. He's a 2 hitter and doesnt have enough power to make people pitch to Ortiz and Manny. This is causing Manny to chase pitches and the line continues from there. Your offense has the capability to rebound, so in that respect, Theo is correct.
But the most stabilizing force on your team over your 50 game run (when you were 35-15) was your rotation. And that is no longer the case. You have Beckett, who has pitched okay over the last month and a half (4.1ERA) and DiceK who has been hot/cold. Now if you had both of those guys in a rotation with an effective Schilling and a hot Wakefield, then they would be wonderful. But when you lean on them to be the only consistent source of stability, panic will ensue. Like I have said multiple times, if you dont upgrade your rotation, that back end will be a killer. And if Schilling returns as an inconsistent shell of himself, just like when he went on the DL, he wont be helping. Wakefield has been more cold than hot, Tavarez has been awful, and Gabbard has been lucky sans his last start (you cannot expect to get by on a 1.5 WHIP for too long without getting burned).
SO, even though you may not think it, I think the yankees are more equipped right now to hang in this race. Now you have the lead, no doubt, and you earned it while we slogged through our doldrums. But your rotation as constitued will continue to put serious strain on your offense and pen, a strain that will eventually lead to meltdown. Because when you have a 2 man rotation with 3 pieces of s*** at the end, you absolutely need them to win all of their starts, and unless you have Spahn and Koufax on the hill, that aint happening.
