  1. The argument wasnt his ability to play CF at the time. It was that he wouldnt make the field. Regardless, the point is moot. Damon was a great fit for NY and would have at the very least been a pretty good fit for Boston.
  2. The question is, would or should he be blown away by Beltre
  3. Adamant was the wrong word. Lets just say, that he really would like to stay under the tax unless he is blown away. Lets put it this way. Lets say.... Beltre signs for 9 mil a yr for 3 yrs. It put them over the luxury tax by lets say 5 mil for 2010. That 5 mil is taxes at 40% for 2010, so overally, in yr 1, Beltre would cost $11 million. Now, if they didnt sign Beltre, the lux tax would be 22.5% in 2011 and 30% in 2012. Instead, with Beltre, they'd be at 40% for both those seasons. So, lets say the sox are $10 million over the cap in both 2011 and 2012. Beltre would cost them $10.75 million and $10 million for those seasons. So, instead of 3 yrs 27 million, it becomes 3 yrs $32 million. Is Beltre worth $5 million more than his salary in extra sunk cost? And, that figure assumes the sox are only $10 mil over the cap in 2011, which might be underestimating.
  4. Also, if Theo is adamant about staying under the lux tax, then he's handcuffed significantly at the deadline too
  5. If Theo holds to company line, Beltre is an impossibility unless they can shed about 5 millionb in salary.
  6. I dont care what Rosenthal, Morosi and Olney say. You said that Hoyer said it. I want to see the link or the sound bite
  7. You know nothing about common tactics aside from your own high horse and projection of what you think onto others.
  8. Yeah, so that link said nothing of who he'd be looking for
  9. They mustnt teach basic reasoning in the Dominican. I said that Vazquez and Halladay were the only ones to post a 4.5+ WAR since 2006. I never said that Vazquez was as good as Halladay. Cmon man, you are just getting more and more ridiculous with each passing day
  10. This is a completely outlandish quote. Nobody said anything about Matsui levels. Cmon now.
  11. Not at all. He's just durable and effective. That's the point that you keep trying to gloss over
  12. But he posted a WAR of 4.5+ per yr over the last 4 seasons. Only one other pitcher in baseball has done that. And that's Halladay
  13. He has never once specifically said that. Never once.
  14. according to your skewed standards. FIP takes away all biases.
  15. and that performance is incredibly variable season to season. It is a miserable way to measure someone's worth.
  16. Find me a source to where he "publicly asked" for anyone
  17. Its a futile effort. Clutch has been disproven over time and even some of the most "unclutch" people of all time have suddenly become absolute locks when the chips are down. Arguing who is better in the #4 spot is stupid. You are talking about 2 guys who have put up .900+OPS's with close to 30 or more homers and 110 or more RBIs. Both qualify
  18. 8yrs 140 million? Wow, talk about bidding against yourself. Maybe the Cardinals didnt like the idea of waiting on Boras and so they caved
  19. Well, I think there isnt an incentive for SD to deal AdGon unless they got some serious right now talent. Now, those restrictions will lighten when he gets closer to FA. But right now, they have 2 yrs of cost controlled dollars invested in this guy and he is a great fit for the community. He's a pretty big draw for a team that doesnt really have any other drawing points. So, there really is a disincentive to dealing him, unless the sox overwhelm SD with something they can grasp. I honestly think that the asking price would be something like Ellsbury + Buchholz or Bard or some combination of top level young pitcher and top level young position player. Right now, that would create a hole that may not be worth making. Now, as the year goes on and SD slips out of contention, a minor league prospect grab might be more amenable to Hoyer and it could get done
  20. You dont think he's underappreciated? A guy who takes the bump consistently and gives above average to great performances yr after yr?
  21. The good thing is, we have a yr to figure that out. That's the beauty of this deal. As long as he toes the rubber in 2010, he'll retain his Type A status (based on his incredible 2009), and if he isnt solid, then we let him walk for 2 draft picks. We essentially get to audition one of the most underappreciated starters in baseball for a yr and get compensation if he doesnt cut it
  22. Getting 5yrs and 80 million out of the Mets is pretty frickin good for him in a serious down market where there arent too many big clubs looking for corner OFers in his price range.
  23. I'd go one step further and say that the only way AdGon is dealt is if the sox hurt their current team more than they help it by adding AdGon, right now.
  24. No tool is perfect. But when you combine pristine peripherals with a beautiful FIP, you have to at least be skeptical about the ERA. In 2009, the peripherals matched his performance. I dont expect that to happen to the same degree in 2010, but he really has been a very good pitcher for a long, long time. We just happened to get him at a time when his arm tired for half a season and we shipped him away. I think all of his stats point towards him being rather successful, and we might be talking about him signing an extension rather than leaving via FA
  25. Vazquez is one of two pitchers to post a WAR of 4.5 or higher since 2006. Halladay being the other one. BUT HE SUCKS!!!
