1. Winning 2 out of every 5 games is not a recipe for success. The improvement needs to come from somewhere. Halladay makes this team incredible on the front end, gives them a huge competitive advantage in the playoffs (should they get there) and will help save the bullpen, something Penny and Smoltz can't seem to do. Since the Seattle series, this team has been wallowing in its own filth. Jarrod Washburn would be a terrible signing for this team. Extreme FB pitcher without the best OF defense in the league in the AL East? Davis, NL junkballer coming to the AL East? Terrible idea. It's a good thing I haven't held my breath for Jason Bay to make any adjustments seeing as its been close to two full months of suckage from him. I disagree on your second point. A run saved is worth just as much as a run earned, getting Halladay would cover up A LOT of warts of this offense. I hate to give up Buchholz, I really do, but the time is right to make the trade. I want Halladay. I actually think the bullpen is the strength of this team. SP is slightly above average and the offense is the same. Papelbon needs to get his s*** straightened out, though. While I don't disagree, their offense covers a lot of their warts. They've won the last two against the ALC leading Tigers pretty easily. Hunter, Feldman, and Millwood are all having great years. If Feliz comes up, they're that much better. The Yankees are a much better team than we are right now. I buy the Rangers more than the Tigers. Writing the Angels off is incredibly foolish.
2. The ship is sinking, folks.
3. "We like our club" "Cost of milk is too high"
4. Completely honest question - do you feel this team is a WS contender if they do not make a deal? If so, why?
5. They tried that already. It didn't work.
6. Yanks already up 1-0.
7. Sounds like panic to me. Why is it when I criticize it's panicking?
8. How much comes out of your pocket every month? This team sucksssssss
9. Papelbon owes you nothing.
10. Dealt to SF for a minor leaguer, Sox pre-game has it as Tim Alderson, AAA pitcher.
11. Fixed, changed browsers.
12. This old argument? hi-f***ing-larious
13. You'd trade 5 more years of Lester for 1.5 of Halladay? Really?
14. Irrelevant, the Yankees, like the Red Sox, have the financial muscle to restock their farm system. I really think if they tell JP that they'll take Rios's contract, and give them Jackson/Montero and ONE of Hughes/Chamberlain and throw in some more cash that JP would be hard pressed not to take that deal. The Yankees never "mortgage their future". You're certifiably insane if you think that. Wang hasn't been healthy since 2007 and adding Halladay to Burnett and Sabathia makes them instant WS favorites if they aren't there already.
15. JP is out of his goddamned mind.
16. But we do. That's the point. This team was constructed under the belief that Papelbon would be out of this world awesome and be the guy to lock down games late. That drop in K/BB is simply startling to me.
17. Does Lee's trade to Philadelphia pave the way for the Sox to land Halladay? I'm still very concerned about the last-second Yankee involvement that always seems to happen.
18. Fair point, it is very rocky compared to all of his other seasons. Like I said earlier, it makes me grateful he wants to go year to year.
19. I wouldn't call it "relatively rocky", for this reason:
Year|IP|K|BB|K/BB 2005|34|34|17|2.00 2006|68.1|75|13|5.77 2007|58.1|84|15|5.60 2008|69.1|77|8|9.63 2009|43|45|20|2.25
It's very, very troubling. I still fear he's hiding an arm injury, or he is at the very least messing up his mechanics to avoid injury with greatly reduced results. He is not the same pitcher he was from 2006-2008. Closer's shelf lives are very short anyways, it wouldn't shock me if Papelbon is out of baseball altogether in two or three years.
20. http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/massarotti/2009/07/just_dicek_beinGodicek.html?camp=localsearch%3a%6fn:twit:mazz Some of this is Mazz being Mazz but wow, seeing Farrell and Tito make these comments is shocking.
