  1. Masterson, Colon to pitch Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff May 18, 2008 11:30 AM The Red Sox have announced the starters for Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, against the Kansas City Royals. Justin Masterson will be brought up on Tuesday, swapped with Chris Smith (who came up today). Then Masterson will return to the minors after the game, and Bartolo Colon will come up to the big league club and will pitch on Wednesday. That leaves the rotation as follows for this week: Sunday: Josh Beckett vs. Carlos Villanueva Monday: Jon Lester vs. Luke Hochevar Tuesday: Justin Masterson vs. Gil Meche Wednesday: Bartolo Colon vs. Brett Tomko Thursday: Daisuke Matsuzaka vs. Brian Bannister Since Masterson's April 24 debut against the Angels, the starter has struggled with Portland. Over his last four starts, he has given up 16 earned runs in just 19 1/3 innings. He has taken the loss in three of those four games.

  8. Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff May 17, 2008 01:54 PM Good afternoon from a lovely sunny day at Fenway Park. It's a whole lot better than it was last night here, though it seems that we'll be having quite the lengthy day at the park. Just remember, if you're coming in for the second game, that there will most likely be quite the traffic jam outside, given that about 35,000 people will be entering and exiting at roughly the same time. As for the Red Sox, Hideki Okajima has a bit of a wrist injury, which the Red Sox will be monitoring. It doesn't appear serious enough that he will need a stint on the disabled list, but it will be checked out. Mike Lowell is just getting a rest with three games to be played in about 36 hours. Coco Crisp is not quite 100 percent, after working through his illness earlier this week, but said he can pinch run or play defense (or even pinch hit) in the first game. He might even be able to play in the second. He had a bit of vertigo, he said, something that came with the headaches. The pain was apparently about an eight on a 1 to 10 scale. It was not, however, bad enough that he was prevented from driving. Hello all....from Cleveland. I'm sure I won't get the Red Sox game since the Guardians and the Reds are also playing. I'll get the late on MLB.TV.

  17. Sox talks with Rockies on Tavarez still alive Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff May 11, 2008 06:52 PM MINNEAPOLIS - The Red Sox are still talking with the Colorado Rockies about a deal for reliever Julian Tavarez. News of the talks, first reported in the Denver Post last week, have not died out, but remain active accordiing to a major league source with knowledge of the situation. The Sox traded Bryan Corey today to the San Diego Padres. With Bartolo Colon (oblique) making progress in his rehab assignment in Pawtucket where he was gunned at 97 mph, the Sox might be trying to find a spot for Colon. Tavarez is 0-1 with a 7.15 ERA, but it's been difficult for the Red Sox to get work for Tavarez. He pitched an inning last Wednesday, but hadn't worked before April 24th prior to that
  18. A few things.... Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff May 11, 2008 05:14 PM Manny Ramirez is out of the lineup with sore right hamstring. Manager Terry Francona said Ramirez phoned him this morning to tell him the hamstring was hurting after he ran hard to beat out a double-play ball in the 9th. Ramirez, who has one hit in his last 15 at-bats, was having treatment this afternoon. No word on how long he might be out. Julio Lugo sat out a second day. Francona said the CT scan looked clean and that Lugo's eyes looked a lot clearer today. Alex Cora was starting at shortstop. Francona said Sean Casey is with the team, but he won't be activated until tomorrow. Craig Hansen remains on the roster for at least another game.
