  1. Pitch well Lester! WIN!!
  2. Imagine that.... From the Globe: Jason Bay remained absent from the lineup with a balky hamstring, replaced by Josh Reddick in the lineup. Bay told Francona he could play tonight, but with a right-hander (Matt Garza) going to Tampa tonight and a lefty (David Price) scheduled for tomorrow, Francona will play J.D. Drew (groin) tonight and Bay tomorrow night, giving each player a day off. "We’ll kind of flip-flop," said the manager. Speaking in front of his locker, Bay said he expects to back full-time for the New York series, though the Red Sox may remain cautious there, too.

  12. Victor Martinez arrives Posted by Monique Walker, Globe Staff August 1, 2009 05:09 PM Victor Martinez will make his Red Sox debut tonight, starting at first base against the Orioles. Today he met with reporters before the game and said he is excited about joining a playoff contender but sad about leaving the Cleveland Guardians, an organization that signed him out of Venezuela in 1996. "It’s tough to leave that team that gave you the opportunity to be a Major League ballplayer, especially when it was my only organization," said Martinez, who was traded from Cleveland yesterday for Justin Masterson and minor leaguers Nick Hagadone and Bryan Price. Despite leaving the Guardians, Martinez said that he is "honored to wear the Boston uniform." Martinez is hitting .284 this season with 15 homers and 67 RBIs. He is both a catcher and a first baseman, but he said he had not had the chance to talk with manager Terry Francona in detail about how he will be used defensively. When it comes to working with catcher Jason Varitek, Martinez said he is looking forward to learning from the veteran catcher. "I always look up to Jason," Martinez said. "He’s one of the best catchers in the game. I always look up to him, and I really look forward to talking to him a lot just to be beside him and learn. I’ll learn a lot of stuff from him."
  13. Sox roster moves Posted by Monique Walker, Globe Staff August 1, 2009 04:54 PM A few roster moves to report for the Red Sox today. Victor Martinez, who is starting at first today, and Casey Kotchman were added to the active roster. To make room for both players, the Red Sox optioned pitcher Marcus McBeth back to Triple-A Pawtucket and placed catcher George Kottaras on the disabled list.

  16. Epstein's thoughts after deadline day Posted by Chris Forsberg, Boston.com Staff July 31, 2009 05:47 PM Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein is holding a conference call with the media to talk about today's roster moves. Here's some quick highlights (check out the audio player below to hear highlights from the conference call): Epstein on deadline day moves On Victor Martinez: "We think Victor Martinez is a great fit for our club and provides a significant offensive boost and does it with some versatility that compliments our roster well. He can catch, give [Jason Varitek] some rest; he can play first base; DH a little bit. He's a good fit for our roster and provides offensive support and depth at the same time." On pursuing a starting pitcher: "We were involved with some talk that could have led to some pretty good starting pitchers coming available, but it didn't turn out that way. I don't think you'll see much impactful starting pitching available in August, but we like our pitching staff... We have to do a better job than we've done lately." Later, Epstein said the team had been excited about some trade talks earlier in the week, but, while things got close, they didn't come to fruition. He hinted there were some deals that would have sent away "five or six prospects." Epstein said the team was "very aggressive with the use of our own prospects" and that potential deals could be revisited in the offseason. More to come
  17. Sox make roster moves Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff July 31, 2009 06:20 PM The Red Sox made a few temporary roster moves, likely for tonight's game only, to replace Justin Masterson and Adam LaRoche. Pawtucket righthanded reliever Marcus McBeth and Double A Portland outfielder Josh Reddick will be available tonight. McBeth has compiled a 2.28 ERA and held opponents to a .176 batting average. Reddick, a breakout hitter during spring training, is batting .277 with a .520 slugging percentage and 13 home runs. At 22, Reddick will become the youngest player to wear a Red Sox major league uniform this season straight from Double A. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Sox placed Daisuke Matsuazaka on the 60-day disabled list and designated Travis Denker designated for assignment.
  18. Drew out with groin strain Posted by Adam Kilgore, Globe Staff July 31, 2009 06:25 PM J.D. Drew will miss tonight’s game with a slight groin strain, the injury that forced him out of last night’s game when he felt a twinge while he running to second on a double. Drew, 11 for 25 during his seven-game hitting streak, thinks the injury will keep him out for 24 to 48 hours, and he’s not certain yet if he will play tomorrow. “I feel like I’m swinging the bat where I don’t want to miss any time at all,” Drew said. “But that being said, I’ve got to be smart about it. If I get on base tonight and had to go first to third or something, it a very good chance I could mess it up pretty bad. I think in a couple days it should respond pretty well.”
