  1. TIM-MAY!!!! Cano: Send Wakefield to Cooperstown Permalink|Comments (18) Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff June 9, 2011 12:58 PM By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff NEW YORK — Fox's Ken Rosenthal, one of the best in the business, wrote a terrific column on Tim Wakefield. His jumping off point was Robinson Cano suggesting that Wakefield belongs in the Hall of Fame. "Tell Wakefield he’s got my vote,” Cano told Rosenthal. As somebody who voted for the Hall for Fame for the first time last year, my immediate thought is somebody with a 4.38 earned run average does not merit a place in Cooperstown. But when you look at the big picture — 609 games, 446 starts, 196 wins, even 21 saves — it gives you pause. The longer you're around baseball teams, the more you realize how much value there is in having a pitcher who will take the ball no matter what the situation and give his team a chance to win the game. In the end, when all the statistics are scrubbed away, winning the game is all that really matters. The rest is just something to talk about. Rosenthal admitted that he was wrong for suggesting in spring training that Wakefield was finished. Add me to that list, too. I thought the same thing and I was wrong. I should have asked Robbie Cano what he thought. It really speaks to how well Wakefield is respected in the game when an opposing players says something like that.
  2. Salty sick; Varitek starts Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff June 8, 2011 04:56 PM Jarrod Saltalamacchia is sick and may not be available. Terry Francona hinted that a move could be pending. "It would be nice to have a backup catcher," he said. Bobby Jenks is out. He and Jed Lowrie had MRIs today. No word on their status yet. The Yankees also have issues. Russell Martin is out with a sore back. Jorge Posada is away attending to his son, who is having surgery done. Joba Chamberlain went on the DL with a flexor strain. Jeff Marquez was claimed off waivers from Chicago and added to the roster

  5. Pretty interesting: Tim Wakefield vs. Derek Jeter: A matchup for the ages Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff June 8, 2011 10:05 AM By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff NEW YORK — Derek Jeter will dig in against Tim Wakefield in the bottom of the first inning tonight and we should all take a moment and appreciate the little slice of baseball history taking place. Talk about old friends. Counting the postseason, Wakefield has faced Jeter 127 times in his career. That's the most Wakefield has faced any batter and the most Jeter has faced any pitcher. Jeter is 33 of 119 with three doubles, a triple, three home runs and seven walks. Wakefield has struck him out 16 times. Both men are probably satisfied to a degree. Jeter has hit .277 against the mystifying knuckleball, but that is 36 points below his career batting average. So Wake has that going for him. They first met on June 15, 1996 at Fenway Park. Jeter, batting leadoff, doubled the first time he faced Wakefield. But Wakefield stuck around for five innings and got the win in an 8-6 Red Sox victory. Every other player who got in that game has retired. The Red Sox lineup Jeff Frye 2B John Valentin SS Mo Vaughn 1B Jose Canseco DH Tim Naehring 3B Reggie Jefferson LF Mike Stanley C Troy O'Leary RF Lee Tinsley CF Tim Wakefield RHP The Yankees lineup Derek Jeter SS Bernie Williams CF Paul O'Neill RF Darryl Strawberry DH Tino Martinez 1B Mariano Duncan 2B Jim Leyritz C Gerald Williams LF Andy Fox 3B Ramiro Mendoza RHP Yankees manager Joe Girardi pinch hit in that game. Wakefield is 44 now and Jeter 36. You're not supposed to still be pitching at 44 or playing everyday at shortstop at 36. Having been fortunate enough to cover both of them as a beat writer, I can tell you they share the the same pride at showing up every day to do their job. Whether you are a fan of the Red Sox or the Yankees, I bet you admire the guy on the other team. Wakefield is 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA in is last three starts and has played a huge role in the Red Sox resurgence this season. Meanwhile Jeter is closing in on 3,000 hits and remains a viable presence for the Yankees. The next time either one of them does something to embarrass the team will be the first time. So take a moment to appreciate the history tonight. It'll be a long time before we see the likes of Tim Wakefield and Derek Jeter again.
  6. RHP Tim Wakefield (2-1, 4.40) vs. RHP A.J. Burnett (6-3, 3.86), 7:05 p.m., NESN, YES, ESPN WIN!!
  7. I don't feel that I "attacked" you. In fact, I put some thought into the post b/c I know how sensitive you can be. I have ignored your constant criticism of Francona. But after last night's WIN I had to say something. If we had lost I could understand. So I apologize if I upset you. As for the strategy question, I have no idea what the heck you are talking about. In the 9th last night, I was stressed about Paps giving up a run and worried he'd blow the save. I don't analyze the game with the same depth a lot of you out here do. To each his/her own.
  8. I was afraid he was going to get thrown out!
  9. Nice start fella's! Love Jacoby wearing #2, that was Rem-Dawg's #.
  10. Lowrie seeking MRI on sore shoulder Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff June 7, 2011 05:21 PM By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff NEW YORK — Red Sox shortstop Jed Lowrie hopes to get an MRI on his sore left shoulder in the coming days to find out what, if anything, is wrong. Lowrie was injured in a collision with teammates Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury chasing a pop up in Detroit on May 29. He has started five of the six games since but is out of the lineup tonight. "My shoulder started to feel better. I started feeling it my back a little more. My back was there from the beginning, the shoulder started feeling better then everything sort of plateaued. No better, no worse," Lowrie said. "It hasn't got any better. I'm not overly concerned, but at the same time it hasn't gotten any better. "Hopefully another day and we'll figure out what's going on." Lowrie said he feels the pain constantly. "It never really really goes away," he said. "Kind of a dull ache the while time. I haven't really felt anything too sharp. More like a dull ache." Plans are in the works to get an MRI. "I think it benefits everybody," he said. "There's no reason not to do it, just for everybody's peace of mind." Lowrie described the pain as being in the area of his scapula, which is the area behind the shoulder. **********************
  11. Didn't think this needed it's own thread since we all knew it was coming. MLB suspends Papelbon for 3 games Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff June 7, 2011 05:02 PM By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff NEW YORK — This release from Major League Baseball: Boston Red Sox reliever Jonathan Papelbon has been suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount for his inappropriate actions, which included making contact with home plate umpire Tony Randazzo, during the top of the ninth inning of his Club’s Saturday, June 4th game against the Oakland Athletics at Fenway Park. Joe Garagiola Jr., Senior Vice President of Standards and On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement. Papelbon’s suspension was scheduled to begin being served during Boston’s game tonight against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, but he has elected to appeal. Thus, his suspension will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.
  12. LHP Jon Lester (7-2, 3.94) vs. RHP Freddy Garcia (4-4, 3.34), 7:05 p.m., NESN, MLB Network WIN!
  13. Scutaro shines during rehab Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff June 6, 2011 05:23 PM By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff Marco Scutaro was 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored for Class AAA Pawtucket in today's 11-3 victory at Durham. Scutaro was 5 for 11 in three games for the PawSox and is expected to rejoin the Red Sox tomorrow in New York. RHP Scott Atchison will be sent back to Pawtucket at that point. The Sox had gone with an extra pitcher on Sunday when they sent Josh Reddick down. Darnell McDonald is destroying the International League in his rehab. He was 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs today. He is 8 for 19 with six runs scored, five extra-base hits and 11 RBIs in six games. That's a .421/.522/.895 line.
